Am a descendant of a brother of Kit and have a little trivia for you. Actor William Smith (Conan the Barbarians father and Red Dawn etc.) was a descendant of the Carson and Boone families through Kits half brother William Carson and his wife Cassandra Boone (daughter of Daniel Boone's nephew).

My interest in Carson and this general period (and personalities) of US history was ignited from reading George McDonald Fraser's, "Flashman and the Redskins". Whilst a fictitious account (of the adventures of the eponymous cad and Rugby School alumnus) McDonald Fraser wrote with such verve that this exciting and fascinating tale rings wholly true. Not for the faint of heart, Flashman's salty Victorian attitudes would give feminists and the "woke" a case of the vapours, but a thoroughly rollicking and enjoyable read for grown ups.
@mikekemp98773 жыл бұрын
same for me.frasers depth of obscure historical knowledge in a pre internet age is astounding.indeed in covering the crimea and indian mutiny for a history degree his notes within the novels and bibliography were essential as modern historians tend to repeat themselves and offer little insight into the people who lived in those times their attitudes and reactions.one gem from the novels was the true revelation unrecorded elsewhere but a fact as fraser has articles from leading journals of the day to back it up such as the times was that war was declared on russia when the cabinet were either drunk or asleep! they couldnt recall why they had decided to do it who suggested it or why they did.carson the biggest hero of the west even in his lifetime has oddly been neglected by hollywood apart from rip torn playing him in a mini series about the eqaully forgotten fremont the only other screen incarnation was jon hall in a 30s standard western owing little to the great man.i always thought alan ladd could have played him well.

Here to learn more. My uncle told me our Turley cousins, Kit Carson hid in one of their freight wagons and they smuggled Kit Carson out (from what threat or to where I don’t know) 😂 they owned a freight hauling business on the Santa Fe trail and lived near his family

@historias28842 жыл бұрын
Bro, in south eastern Colorado there is a small ass town named after him. The town is literally about 100 houses or so, takes about two or 3 minutes to go through and its surrounded by an ocean of flat grass land. There ain't another town or sign of civilization for miles around it. It's a strange and awesome sight seeing a semi ghost town like that, there's even a little museum there that you can visit and buy nick knacks!

Carson faught in the Battle of San Pasqual, which is in North San Diego County, near the San Diego Safari Park, east of Escondido. There's a museum & historical markers in that valley. And yes, Kit Carson Park is a few miles west in Escondido, Ca.

More Carson trivia...Kits kids were pretty messed up. One became a prostitute, one beat his father in-law in the head with a hammer and shot him (they remained friends) one committed suicide, another died in an asylum, and another shot and killed his mother in-law and shot his father in-law.

@@elmolewis9123 The Navajos stole from and enslaved their neighbors just as so many other tribes and peoples have done, white tribes, red tribes, black tribes. It is human nature. They were and are a proud and interesting people. The course of history was set against their sovereignty, it was what it was. It was best to have the issue settled and Kit Carson knew this. The white men could have done much worse. Do the Navajo not still live on their ancestral lands, are they not allowed to speak their own language and practice their own ways? The white man had the power to have committed genocide on the Navajo and many others if they had wished. Instead they are granted more benefits than the average citizen. Would the Navajo have been so generous to a defeated foe? I wonder. Of course they defended themselves. They were a warrior race and they are honored for it.
