It's about 50/50, he says, between pads and acoustic drums. Many of the acoustic drums also have triggers, and the final mix often has a blend of both miked drums and samples from the triggers.
This massive kit includes gear from DW, LP, Sabian, Roland, Vic Firth, and Big Fat Snare Drum.

GrumblyAirMonk if you actually watch the video rather than insulting the guy. The drummer says that one of his pedals controls confetti cannons for shakira as there isn’t always music to end on for a cue so he will push the foot pedal to create the explosions.

@glurp2661

OFFICIAL Falcon Turner It's all about qualifications bro, the drum tech probably went to university, meticulously studied drum sounds, maintenance, everything drum related day in, day out, for years. Not to mention the fact that drum techs are usually BETTER drummers than who they're working for. Now as for stagehands, well that's just manual labour which you can get into the day you leave school. It's also not considered marketable, therefore, no credit. The moral of the story is, the harder you work developing a specific set of skills, the more benefits you reap.
@glurp2661
@glurp2661 6 жыл бұрын
OFFICIAL Falcon Turner At no point did I say that stagehands didn't deserve credit dude! I said that they don't GET credit, which I was actually agreeing with you on. Well yeah, tuning is a big one for starts, they gotta be able to change a drum skin and tune it in 30 seconds flat if something went wrong, that takes practice. They would also have to learn everything about drum sample layering, EQ, Compression, Saturation, etc. They're basically mixing engineers as well as phenomenal drummers. Not everyone can do that. Much love from England!

@mattyboy141
@mattyboy141 6 жыл бұрын
@thor Anyone with a clue can tell what a professional looks like by the fact that he presented every part of his kit and explained what it was for. He's Shakira's touring drummer - you think her record company wouldn't hire a professional drummer? You think they'd risk having someone screw up a show which they spend money to produce? She headlines tours around countries, it's all about her. Man, someone take this kid back to school, shit. Jay is completely correct - I sensed the professionalism as soon as I noticed the 2 laptops and then he spoke of the monitors. Oh, and I've been drumming a little while.
@mattyboy141
@mattyboy141 6 жыл бұрын
Your experience in drumming isn't relevant, I too have been drumming over 10 years; check my profile. It's your deductive reasoning that is the problem here. I have no more time for you, figure it out - if he drums and tours for money for Shakira, he's a professional. Full stop. End of story. If you don't understand that, think about what type of artist Shakira is and how she's manufactured/produced/etc.

I am a guitarist and by definition I used amplification and therefore electronics. On top of that I am an IT guy so needless to say I use computers and more electronics blah blah. There is a constellation of electronics you can use and I always get this clash with ol school guitarists that favored all guitar things away from computers and keep it more "tube". I don't give 3 shits. Now looking at this drum set up I am soooooo fascinated at how well planned and responsible he is. Like NASA he has redundancy in his set up. This is how a professional does it. I am about to pick up drums and teach myself and this is very motivating... except I will learn on a $500 Alesis electric kit my son doesn't use anymore LOL! Anyways this kits seems like the Millennium Falcon's cabin! I would just love to have a quarter of that and just go at it and disturb the neighbors, LOL! This is very educational, not sure about why would anybody hate on this guy. I would like to see him play the latin percussion he had on the side, or tribal as he called it.

Stupid question : all of this electronic stuff is, presumably, set to work on 110v electricity. What happens when they tour in Europe or anywhere else where 220v is the norm? Surely they don't just use a cheap converter/adapter.

Not a stupid question at all. That's usually handled by the road crew or electricians at the venue, who can set the voltage to whatever's needed.

He really doesn't have much to remember. As an experienced E drummer myself I can attest to the fact that if you do this on a regular basis, it's not difficult remembering what each pad will trigger for each song. I've performed highly elaborate and sophisticated pieces such as Jan Hammer's "Oh Yeah" and "Time is Free" on pads, even playing a 144 note MiniMoog solo on ONE pad (Alternate Mode DrumKat) with pitch bend via pedal and note hold via breath controller. So, just sayin' - he doesn't have it too tough and he's not just triggering sound fx - not at all. I DO love his laptop setup with a backup! Great rig he has.

You have to remember that the tour contains songs that have all the different sounds by default. You either can add the drums via a playback, or you play them live. When you play them live, well this is how it looks like in order to get it right. That's why her live shows sound so amazing. What you consider being "too much" is relative. Too much for what? You can't play the show this way, by using a standard kit.

Brendan is an accomplished musician who is lucky enough to play in a band that has a wide variety of music and rhythms. I have followed his work and am always impressed with his thoughtful approach to drumming and supporting his band. I suspect Brendan would be accomplished in whatever field of work he would pursue. I wish him well and I enjoy his work. The various comments about the size of his kit, etc. should be taken with a lot of skepticism. Unless you have had to endure a long tour with complex musical requirements and dealing with the invariable nature of machines breaking, it is difficult to understand why people use the equipment they do. In the 80s as a teenager my band toured and I had an acoustic set, and I still had problems with equipment such as the kick pedal spring breaking, hi-hat clutch issues, microphones randomly muting, etc...

Blast beats are just a matter of speed on the wrist and fingers, what i think its more difficult to achieve are odd time signatures and implement them properly to meke them sound good in a song.
