One of the tricks to filming with models with manual movement is to use as high a framerate as possible, and slowing it down in the edit for a much smoother look.

I do think slower shots would be better, spaceships tend to sort of "linger" even when they are going somewhere. I also think there could be more sharpness somehow, maybe this means going a bit bigger or using a different type of lens? That being said you are really making such big steps which is great fun to watch.
@hobbyhermit665 жыл бұрын
That 1st lens might have been a kool effect. By only having a portion of the ship in focus, it may have looked huge. Be interesting to see.

I remember my first attempt at doing this. I had a green screen and models made out of old toy parts and deodorant bottles. They were held up by fishing line and paper clips to my basement ceiling. I built a PVC track and a wooden skate dolly so I could dolly in and out my ship passes.

Really nice series of videos. The one thing I would say though is that tracking the background images to the motion of the ship makes it appear that we (the camera) is moving around static images. I think it would work better if in the majority of shots the camera was static, the background doesn't move but the ship flies past it, and then maybe in one shot you could have the camera pan (background tracked to motion) to follow the ship. Good work though mate, keep it up :)

I couldn't stand it when my animation studio crashed. I will find better software, and carry on from there. Right now, the only audio software I have is Audacity, which is actually quite good. Love to see a complete rendering of a storyboard of some kind, no matter how short or long. Love those light effects you put in. Thanks for the entertainment and info.

The slider really helps. The shots look great. The weathering looks spot on, not too heavy at all... Get prime lenses, they have a better depth of field, zoom lenses tend to be more shallow. Bigger models and a lot more light will help with depth of field too (maybe out doors on a non windy bright day could help?)

Seen the making videos and now this one... I love it! Re shooting it with DSLR, are you sure this was a tilt shift lens? It looked to me like just a standard lens with very wide open aperture. If so, you could just close down the aperture and reduce the bokeh effect. Bokeh refers to being sharp only close to the focus point, whereas everything (further away as well as closer to the lens) is out of focus. Applied in certain ways this can add a huge amount of scale and spacial perception in such a clip. Might be worth playing with it.

question from someone who has never made a movie but wants to, why not have the model on the slider and keep the camera static? Wouldn't that give more movement the the finished scene? I was surprised and would like to know why you choose to do it that way. BTW I only discovered your channel a few days ago and have really been enjoying it.

Very inspiring and cool. Try slowing down the shot however. When shooting miniatures slowing down the footage adds "weight" to the model. Also, you can try to move the lights along with the camera, to make it look more like the model moves, because the shadows change.

but what if you want the spaceship to look like it's moving?
@Andulvar5 жыл бұрын
I'd probably do this that in Lumberyard or Unreal since those are the mediums I understand more. Also that way I could add better lighting effects (film grain on anything makes things look great and hides any imperfections). Only issue will be is that I'll need to get a 3d camera, but I was going to get one anyways for making my own textures. For now I'd just use a normal camera and some of the ways to capture things in 3d.

A couple of tips: I noticed you filmed the greenscreen stuff in 30 fps. If you want it to be in 24 fps but the camera can't and you don't mind a bit of a slowdown, then go into the clips interpret footage options and you can set the playback fps to whatever you want (I would set it to 24 and do a 24fps timeline). I say this because I saw some pretty jerky playback motion that leads me to believe that playback speeds were mixed in a strange way. (Or it's just my tablet acting up, but the footage of yourself didn't have that thing going on) Also, to sell the size of the models you need depth of field, and lots of it. Right now you got models that go in and out of focus while the background is in perfect focus. That really makes it feel like models cut out. But for that you need to stop down the camera to get the whole thing in focus and probably pulling focus during the shot to keep the whole thing in shot. That'll make the exposure lower. To combat it you need to get the same amount of photons onto the sensor as when the aperture is wide open. And for that you have two options, either A) getting HUGE amount of lights (ILM often filmed space explosions and stuff in broad daylight for example and got pretty dark pictures because of how stopped down their lenses had to be and the high framerates needed for slowing explosions down) . B) Or you can get a slower shutter. But to keep the motion blur at a 180 degree as is standard you need to slow the fps down. Remember to also slow the camera motion down by the same amount and keep things more steady since you'll see all movements much more pronounced. But you can then quadruple the photons by filming at 6fps with 1/12 shutter and play back at 24fps versus shooting at 24fps with 1/48 shutter and get tons of more DoF of the model when adjusting the aperture to match. C) that tilt shift lens you mention can help too as they were originally built to put the focus plane at odd angles to fake a wider DoF. But you need to align things so that they are in that plane of focus. D) all of the above. :) But damn. I am impressed at what is done with such modest means anyway. :D You have my sub.
@dianastasny93385 жыл бұрын
That is awesome, however I think your lighting, while realistic, isn't quite convincing. Might try a re edit with the contrast turned down a bit for a touch more of the dramatic effect. Also the engine glow is really bright suggesting high speed rather than a slow cruise. Keep the color, spot on BTW, but maybe dial back the flare a bit. Sometimes, less is more 😉 just my two cents. In any case, you've got my subscription!

Something to add to your SFX can be jet and even propeller/piston engines. I wouldn't use them as-is but experiment with repitching them as well as processing them through effects such as flanging, phasers, etc. I did some of that with this resounding from a few years ago.. sorry for the low vid quality. It's not a complete reworking of all the sounds in the video but take note of the fighters. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5KUmpucj5pgi7M

I love every project it's something I have been inspired by others the other day to do looking on youtube finding how to make a starship for my song over on soundcloud, I am brand new to it, but I have begun my first project, it's a space helmet, but I also want a starship scene video with a immersive other world planet scene to end on so the movie can begin with the helmet in a starfield background poping out at you as song begins then the mid scene to be space flight of a kit bash starship the end trekking through the planet surface to a climactic alien life form found sort of vibe, I am really gaining a grood amount of hard to find info on edit and production from you, I am going to try to buy after effects 6 cheap and have a bash I will link my project eventually and some snaps for you, Just added leds to the helmet but I can't figure out how to cut scraps to cover glue around the obscure helmet opening, can you possibly give us a video on how to shape and stencil for such a situation please. But man I love every show you do every kit bashing project is cool and heavily and thoughtfully hand crafted to perfection and I am enjoying mine to it's rewarding and great fun.
