That stupid typewriter/calculator screen actually working was ridiculous. Audio-controlled messaging? That could be a featured project in itself. Half this stuff could be. It's amazing how much work set-building is for scifi eh? Not a single item "just is", every... single... thing... has to be curated for the set because all of it is fiction. You know you've done a good job when it looks deceptively easy, like everything just belongs because of course that's what it should look like. But when you slow down and break it down, you see every little item isn't just something someone had to build, it's something that had to be thought up, discussed, debated, sourced, THEN built. It's the thousands of decisions that have to be made that represent the bulk of the work, not the actual construction. It's just a door. But what's it look like? What shape is it? What's it built out of? How does it move? How fast does it move? What color is it? Every answer springs up two more questions until time and budget run out and you hope you've done good enough. Also, shit like this and a lucky break can get you a career out of this if you want. A couple friends did a few things and then all of a sudden, ball's rolling and they're working on Star Trek, Xmen, etc 12 months later.

Thanks for the breakdown, it was quite an undertaking! It was helpful that the director gave me a ton of control and creative freedom to get things done my way, so that I could do most of that planning and decision making in my head, and then delegate what I needed done. I would definitely be open to doing more work in this field.
