Kitbashing a Space Marine Company Champion

I keep coming back to this video; it might be the most important one I've ever watched on my hobby journey. The kitbash itself is great, but what's truly special is the approach you took; specifically, having faith in "future me" and taking the plunge. "If I can't do it now, it's not getting done...so I should try now." I have boxes and boxes of unfinished conversions because I'd cut stuff up and mock it up but then chicken out lest I "ruin" it at a later stage. As a result, I have a bunch of simple conversions instead of the really amazing ones I've come up with. Taking this to heart, I actually tried this with the other Calth character, the cataphract praetor, and ended up with a sweet chaplain for my Word Bearers! Still a few bits to fix, but old me would never have gotten past the blue tac stage, and I won't get better with green stuff unless I practice. I thank you from the bottom of my converter's heart, and will tell my traumatized opponents to bill you for their therapy as I unleash a new era of nightmares upon them 😂

Hey man, thank you so much for typing this up and letting me know. I sometimes struggle with motivation to keep putting out content, but stuff like this makes it all worth it and keeps pushing me to get back to my hobby desk and record some more. Wanted to follow up on this @sparkSovereign as I've been thinking about this comment all weekend. As said before, thank you again for taking the time to write this. I started this channel with the goal of sharing my way of interacting with this hobby that I love so much, but its often hard to see that impact over KZbin. Sure, some numbers on my screen might go up over time, but seeing the subscriber count slowly tick higher kinda tricks my brain into thinking I am only doing this to reach "KZbin success", whatever that means. I sometimes find myself wondering if its worth the effort I put into these videos and if I want to keep putting in the hours of, in effect, a 2nd job as quite frankly its not for the money. I think to date I've made something like $16 on KZbin for somewhere north of 500 hours of time. But seeing comments like this helps me remember why I started this channel in the first place, and I am excited to keep on putting our more content and sharing my ideas to our little corner of the internet. Much like you, I also have boxes and boxes of unfinished conversions and I have recently reached the point that the shear amount of unfinished projects I have littering my workspace is frankly causing my some stress. Just a few weeks ago I was sitting in my office after my daughter went to sleep and spent a good hour just trying to figure out what to work on and eventually settled on nothing and went to sleep. I have no idea how that helps me reach any of my channel or hobby goals so I am slowly trying to change my mind set of either finishing up conversions, or letting them go and clearing up that mental space. I know its not the exact same scenario you described, but I think its kinda crazy how much we hobbyists can hit mental blocks and increase our stress in the pursuit of something that is supposed to be a break from the stress of the real world! Super happy to hear that you took the plunge and hacked up that Cataphractii praetor though and Im frankly impressed. I have been staring at a spare copy I have and am downright intimidated by the thought of changing up his arms in away way due to the leather shoulder straps. @@AmnioticlyTanked I very much empathize with the demoralizing effect unfinished projects can have; I even used to refer to my apartment as "the graveyard of unfinished projects", and even simply putting them away rather than telling myself I had to force myself to do them made my hobby space so much less hostile. Huzzah for therapy helping me tell myself "it's okay to decide you don't want to do this one"; like you said, ostensibly the hobby is something we do for fun so we shouldn't torture ourselves about it and just let things go when they do not spark joy. They're just in a box now, I can always come back later if I do get inspired again (like I did for an old contemptor conversion, actually). I'll definitely shoot you some pictures of it, I'm putting some of the final touches on it hopefully today! I basically carved up a plastic cataphractii power sword arm, the trick is going to be mimicking the detailing on the pteruges but my clever plan is to put other gribblies over the worst parts (especially the join where the two sets meet) and hide my many sculpting crimes 😅 already got some of it hidden under parchment, I'm just digging through the bits box to see if I've got the perfect part or if I'll sculpt something else over it. Definitely a challenge!

Great content as always, I'd go with a flat/cone colour shaper for more control when you're sculpting.

Very nice work on the cape my guy. I hope that tutorial I mentioned last time helped out. I'd suggest giving it a little bit of a sanding. Surface imperfections from the sculpting process really come out when the paint/primer goes on, especially on something as large and flat as a cape. Putty/targeted gel super glue can also help fill in smaller divots and hide the transition between plastic and the sculpted bits. I've learned from sculpting stuff for my own videos that working in layers is definitely the way to go for any epoxy putty. The call to do just a liiiiiiittle extra more is really tempting but you gotta resist, otherwise you get that damn "thumb in the green stuff" situation. The struggle is real 🤣

Thank you and it certainly did help get my mind around the process. Good call on the sanding. Do you recommend sand paper, or something else? I think I have seen flexible sanding sticks for sale used them myself. As with super glue, how do you then smooth it out? Re: thumb in greenstuff, it seems like patience really is the name of the game when it comes to sculpting. I've also heard that sometimes is best to let the putty sit for a little while so it starts to cure before sculpting with it, but I could never imagine planning my hobbling out 30 to 60 minutes in advanced!

@@AmnioticlyTanked Glad to help 😁👍 I personally switch between rolled up sandpaper for small nooks and sanding sticks for a flat edge on large surfaces/hand comfort. As for the super glue, I'll apply it with a toothpick and spread it out, then sand it flush. It's not as easy to see as putty since it's clear instead of white but every time I buy putty it dries out in like 3 days so I've learned to make due lol. I use my nail or an exacto to feel the surface and judge if it's smooth or not. A lot of my recent work is full armor sets for some Exodites I'm working on and it's definitely a slow process since I have to do each layer individually, but if you happen to have a lot of subassemblies it does help to minimize downtime. I sometimes also make green stuff sheets with my extra green stuff or if I've nothing to do which are a godsend for cutting out strips for belts or harnesses for various projects. I generally don't wait for my green stuff to cure either lol, unless I'm doing a cape, fur, or specific shapes. In general I basically try to fill my downtime with setting up the next step if I can. Or playing vidya 😎

What type of epoxy did you use for your green stuff mixture? And what was the ratio? The sculpting of the green stuff looked so much smoother than what I work with I’m very curious

Apoxie-Sculpt is the brand name and I threw an (affiliate) link in the video description. Its usually a 50:50 ratio roughly. I have found it far easier to work with than pure green stuff though. The Apoxie sculp has more of a clay consistency, but it a little too soft on its own. Also, the apoxie-sculpt is sandable, and remains sandable when mixed, which I have found extremally useful when sculpting more in-organic objects with hard edges.

@@AmnioticlyTanked Interesting, does the Apoxie-Greenstuff mixture tend to be as sticky as normal green stuff? When I work with green stuff, it tends to stick to my tools often even when I wet the tools. And how easy does it sand down?

@@glenmull9735 It looses a bit of the stickiness, but not all. I still struggle with this sticking to my metal sculpting tools somewhat, even with water. The silicone tools used in this video didn't stick at all though which really helped. Super easy to sand though. The apoxie sculpt/gs mixture looses pretty much all of its flex and greenstuff's weird way that it just crumbles and tears up chunks when sanded

Something I do for cloaks is make a green stuff plus aluminum foil sandwich. Green + al + green = a thicker piece of green stuff with the ability to flex the cloth naturally

I don't like the chaplain model cos he is way too small. Looked like a short marine to me. I used the upper body and the cape but had to swap the legs for different ones with some spacer and filler to make him taller.
