This Video shows you how to diagnose a recirculation pump on this kitchen aid under outer ice maker. Will also show you how to enter and use diagnostics for other tests as well. In diagnostics you can test the compressor, water valve, thermistors, condenser fan and drain pump.
After diagnosis we replace the recirculation pump or water pump. This can be tricky by if you stick with it you can get it out and install the new one. Hardest part is getting the pump out. If you can get it out you can get the new one in pretty easily. Once you get the pump installed you want to test it. You can either turn on the unit to test it, but you will have a wait a bit for it to start. In diagnostics you can go straight to the pump test.

Great review of using the manual diagnostic mode. My problem is that the water reservoir overfills and melts the ice in the back of the bin. After going through the diagnostic sequence, I note two “bad” findings. First, I see that the water level sensor doesn’t turn “on.” The indicator light just keeps blinking. Second, the water reservoir drain pump doesn’t turn on. This is what’s confusing to me: the water level sensor is brand new and I am getting 12V AC at the plug for the water drain pump. So I don’t know if my new water level sensor is bad (unlikely), or that my drain pump motor is bad (I ohms tested it and it seems OK), or if my problem is a control board issue. I’m not sure where to go from here and really appreciate your help.

great video! I am troubleshooting my ice maker. It seems to be pumping out very hot air from the bottom front, is this normal? Also it will occasionally stop producing ice. I turn it off then on again and it will start making ice again. Any ideas? Is it normal for water to drip (as if melting or just condensation) from the top plastic piece that sits in front of the ice cutter? I look forward to your expertise!

Outstanding video! Didn't know what service mode or that you could run diagnostics like that. My issue is no water getting into the reservoir but getting good water from the line. A tests seem to pass...I think. Maybe I missed it but does it check the water valve? EDIT You mention it but seems my tests are not in the same order as your's...any advise would be greatly appreciated

Great video. Thank you. My Maytag icemaker does not have the diagnostic LEDs. It had stopped working and now the I/F panel is unresponsive (never lights up). It makes noise when I first plug it in, but then nothing happens. I have replaced the control board and now the water sensor and recirculating pump and still the unit's interface panel never lights up. The interior light when I first power plug the unit in comes on momentarily, but then turns of and nothing happens. I will take it apart again to make sure I connected everything back correctly, but I would appreciate any additional troubleshooting tips. Thank you!

Great Video. I appreciate how you explained the steps in detail. In my situation, the recirculation pump is working. My ice maker is making ice, but very little, and lots of water. It is always working to fill or drain the storage container. I ran thru all the diagnostics, and cooling and heat bypass all checks out. I suspect the water level sensor. It overfills the container. During the diagnostic test when filling from empty, sometimes it will stop, but the red light does not stop blinking. However, my unit sometimes cuts out during the diagnostic tests, and goes back to normal operation. During normal operation, it fills, circulates, and then drains the container a lot. This seems like a control board issue. I did get thru all test, and except for fill sensor, everything did check out. How do I know if I have a control board issue? And where can I get a water level sensor?

Great Video....my newer Kitchen Aid machine (KUIX535HBS01) only goes into freeze mode with the water recirculating for only about 12 minutes. So, it causes thin sheets of ice that are about 1/8-1/4 inch thick. I cleaned the machine thoroughly, made sure the drain cap is on and made sure there are no kinks in the water or drain lines. Shouldn't the freeze mode last closer to the 20 minutes?

I have a KUIC15NRTS1 with a hot gas valve that will not stop energizing. It actually took out my compressor and solenoid in the process. Wondering if it's a bad board or a condition in which the board thinks it needs to continue to keep the gas valve ON. I desoldered all the relays off the board, but found none that were bad. So it looks like the circuits within the board that actually operate the valve.

thanks for the video, very informational. My problem is that when I open the door it is very warm in the ice compartment, the ice is melting. If I turn off the machine and turn it back on it will work for ten minutes to weeks properly, then I will have to reset it again. Is it the plate staying warm that the ice slides down? is that a new motherboard or is there a relay? thanks in advanace!

Had a recirculation noisy for a customer of mine, then stop completely. Ran through the test, got nothing like your example. Tested and had 13.6V at the plug, figured that would be enough for the pump. Got a new one, still not running. Think it’s a control? Wouldn’t usually expect that small of a voltage different to prevent function. Let me know your thoughts, thanks!

I have a Kitchen Aid Ice Maker, and it was making a noise and it was producing a very large amount of ice, so much that it was pushing the door open. I turned the Ice Maker off, emptied all of the ice (waiting for the ice to drop out of the cutter. When I got it all done, I went to turn the Ice Machine back on but I hit the Clean/Rest button first incase there was something wrong with something somewhere, then I hit the On button and it would not light up. The machine stopped completely. I pulled it out, unplugged it from the wall, pugged it back in but it made a sound like it was going to come back on, bu then nothing. I can't get it to turn back on now. Do you have a video for that???

Great video. I have a couple of questions I’d appreciate you answering. If I want to test the voltage going to either of the pumps, do I do it during the manual test mode for that particular function? Also, when during the ice making process does the water reservoir drain pump turn on? My problem is the water reservoir overfilling. I’ve replaced the reservoir as it did have a crack in it that caused it to drip water in the back of the ice bin and caused the recirculating pump to “gurgle” loudly as it begged for water. But after I replaced the reservoir, it would overfill, melting the ice in the back of the bin. I replaced the water level sensor and the recirculating pump but the reservoir still overfills. I appreciate the time you take to make these videos and answer questions.

I followed your diagnostic routine and the Water Fill Valve was the one blinking, and the fill valve was not filling the reservoir. I replaced the water fill valve and now it fills the reservoir, but the ice maker is not producing ice. It seems to make all the right noises, and cycles the same as before, but no ice. Also, when I do the diagnostics, the water fill valve step still blinks, even though it is filling the reservoir at that moment. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Can you tell me the service code to determine if the new thermistor is bad? Also, is there a code for adjusting the bin level? I only need to have the minimum amount of ice at any one time. Thanks, and great work. The KitchenAid tech support would not share the service codes with me.
@BeardedApplianceRepair
@BeardedApplianceRepair 4 жыл бұрын
Those codes will only tell you in the thermostat is shorted or open. Your unit won’t run either if you have that code. You will have to reference the tech sheet. Should be located on the condenser coil behind the kickplate. I will warn you the information is tiny. I have decent eyesight and need a magnifying glass to read them easily. They should have the info for what the thermostat is supposed to read at 32 degrees. Put the thermostat in some ice water and get a reading on it. My guess is 16000 ohms but I’m probably wrong. I always reference the tech sheets for that info. On my ice machine when I want it to stop I push the ice up to the sensor to stop it. To my knowledge you cannot adjust it. You have to pay kitchen aid for technical information. Or be an authorized servicer. They won’t give the info to consumers. Good luck!

After running through the diagnostics, one machine seems to have a bad recirculating pump and the other fails during the compressor and condenser fan test. Thanks for this very helpful video. A few days ago I replaced the water line tube (clear tube from inlet valve to fill tank) because it had several holes with tiny leaks. Immediately after replacing it the inlet valve began leaking terribly, so I replaced it. Thinking I had the entire ice maker back and ready to go I start it up. No leaks (yay!) but now no ice. After going through your video and running diagnostics I’m pretty sure it’s the recirculation pump. Will test circuits in the morning to be certain. My question is, this is an 11 year old appliance, is it common/not unheard of that other parts would go out just be virtue of being bumped or jostled during replacement of other parts? Was it just a domino effect of the inlvet valve and recirculation pump going kaput because we replaced the water line? I’m beginning to worry I will just get one part replaced and find myself needing to replace another.
@BeardedApplianceRepair
@BeardedApplianceRepair 3 жыл бұрын
For the valve yes. It can spring a leak at any point. Especially if it is that smart valve with the two harness connections. When replacing the water line make sure you plugged everything back in. That can happen as well. I cannot say I have caused a reticulation pump to go out by messing with it, doesn’t mean it is not possible though. Lol.

@@BeardedApplianceRepair Thank you for your quick response! Tested the pump this morning and it seemed to be operating, but still no water flowed to the evaporator plate. After checking everything this morning and ensuring it was all hooked back up correctly I was about to give up. Your response inspired me to mentally check again everything. I turned the ice maker back on and I was finally getting a dribble of water to the evaporator plate, telling me the recirculation pump was indeed functioning. I had cleaned the hard tube that drains the water to the plate when replacing the water line. The dribble made me think I possibly dislodged some buildup and it was causing a clog (thinking of my a/c drain line). Pulled the tube out and did a vinegar soak then grabbed the clean out tube for the a/c drain line and sucked out some nasty stuff. Success! Water is now flowing to the evaporator plate. With any luck I will have ice again tonight! BTW, yes it was the smart valve that was replaced, both water lines in and out had been replaced recently, so I'm not surprised it needed replacing too. I am looking at the positive to all this, I cleaned off YEARS of hard water build up in the process of taking apart/putting back together and hopefully will produce cleaner ice as we operate on rainwater now.

I have two problems I was hoping someone can help me with. Problem #1: the water reservoir overfills and melts the ice in the back of the bin. After going through the diagnostic sequence, the water level sensor doesn’t turn “on.” The indicator light just keeps blinking. So I replaced the water level sensor and the indicator light continues to blink. Problem #2: The machine over produces ice to the level of where you open the door and ice pours out. I replaced the thermistor a few years ago. Is it possible it went bad again? The diagnostics indicate that it is fine. So I pulled it out and tested the OHMs. At 73' degree room temp, the thermistor tested at 11.04 OHMs. When I put it in a glass of cold water, it tested at 14.02 OHMs. Any thoughts? Do I replace the thermistor again or is it possible that I have a bad control board?

Great video.. The issue I am having is that the reservoir fills with water, begins recirculating for about 30 seconds then the drain pump kicks on, drains the reservoir and then begins filling again. If I turn it off and let it sit, turn it back on it will make a few loads of ice and then start the drain fill cycle again. I have replaced the control board but still have the problem. Not sure what's causing this.

Great video - was a lot of help! I dismantled everything thanks to your video and ran the test. The pump is not OL on the ohm meter so I know it is working. The ice maker started making a grinding noise -- comes from somewhere up top. Any ideas? The water line is good and power is good. Looks like the water is not flowing in the fat tube to the left (inside). The obvious problem would be the recirc pump but the grinding noise is higher up (and not at the pump). Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

@MrBiggs1212

@@agflex it didn't end up being the control board on mine. It was a much cheaper fix. The water level sensor that sits in the water reservoir by the pump and triggers the pump to turn on had gone bad. The plug had corroded and one of the wires had actually broken off once I examined it. Apparently that's pretty common over time. I installed a new water level sensor and the pump kicked on as it should and I was back up and running.

Mine keeps filling with water. just fills and over fills constant. I unplug power while its filling and the water fill valve stops so I believe the fill valve is good. about a week now and I turn it off, water stops filling. turn it back on and it fills for 8 minutes like its suppose too. works for a day or two then water wont shut off again, just fills for hours and drain pump kicks on every so often and rains like it should. for the life of me cant figure out what I do to make it stop filling and work for a day or two then happens again. (fills for hours). makes ice but overflow melts it pretty fast. replaced circ pump, wiring harness a few months ago due to another issue and it worked great for a month with big clean cubes. now just filling with water unless i shut it off or unplug it then it stops. sorry to ramble, trying to give the bearded one as much info as possible. I would check the plug first. Try plugging it into another known good outlet and see if it does the same thing. Drain problem maybe! I have a similiar ice machine and it fill for 4 minutes straight. They call it fresh water lol. anyways alot of them will over fill the bin. The tech line will tell you the water lever sensor is for harvesting. Before i right a book ill just say you may have drain issue. If you have standing water in the bin it will melt the ice prematurely. Make sure the drain line is not kinked. It sounds like a slow drain to me.

I have never seen a bad gas valve so I couldn't tell you. You may have a bad pump or it is not getting water like it should. Dry pumps can sound rough so make sure your reservoir is not leaking the water out. I have found the tube that goes up to the evaporator to be disconnected occasionally. That can cause your issue maybe. Good Luck!

Un installing these things are always different. Depends on the home and where the drain and water are. Pulling yours out will be easy or hard depending on the plumber and installer itself. I may end up making one of those one day. Some plan ahead for repairs and others do not. There is that front panel you can take off to clean that condenser. Should be easy to do just need either a torque bit set or a 1/4 nut driver or socket.
