This family has the benefit of a HUGE pantry, and when properly organized, they can clearly see what they have in stock. They should take advantage of that and do an inventory check before they go to the store, every time. So many people don't have that luxury and find it difficult to see what they already have and therefore do not need to buy. I spent years and over purchasing, buying things I already have multiples of, and then throwing away so much expired food. Such a waste of time, money, food, packaging and resources. It would be interesting to see how much money all of that expired food added up to. I'm sure it was hundreds of $$.

Its just me & my hubby so we don't have all that food storage issue. We also declutter kitchen gadgets on a semi-regular basis. We live in an apartment & space is tight becuz kitchen is tiny. So to have all that stuff is just out of the question. Despite regular donations, we still have too much stuff!! LOL!!😂😝😳I mean like where does it all come from? I haven't done any personal shopping for a year!! Its been hard financially to do so anyway. But it does help me to appreciate what I already have. ☺Great job on helping this family!! Keeping that amount of food in the pantry requires a system. I label all my pantry items with the expiration date before I shelve them. Newest goes behind also. It takes time.

Things get lost on wide shelves. I have that problem in my pantry. I think we get a bit crazy on the expiration dates for some things. "Best by" won't kill you. The quality decreases. So depending on the product (cake/bread mixes where yeast is involved; fizz in drinks; caramelization in sweetened milk; spices. etc would go) and how long (2005 yikes) I do not throw away. "Use by" is what you need to worry about. The food industry is making $$ on expiration dates. Also, which is better for spices: carousal or step up?

I used to stockpile food somewhat because I lived on an island that only had a couple of small (pricey) grocery stores. I’d “grub up” when I went to the bigger town across the channel. In 2003 we moved to a small city but I still had the mindset of “stocking up.” I had lived on that island for 27 years so it was really ingrained in my subconscious. After about 10 years (!) I was able to reframe my approach. I began to think of my favourite grocery stores as my “pantry”. Now I keep some staples and nonperishables but I realize that my “things” come on sale regularly enough and I’m not wasting outdated items so I’m not spending more. I do shop about once a week.
