Washing fruit before you put it away causes it to rot faster. It’s better to just wash stuff off when you’re going to eat it unless you’re not sticking it in the fridge. Enjoyed the rest of the tips though! You have some great suggestions.

The Mad Lolita how does it cause it to rot faster?
@Meg20008
@Meg20008 5 жыл бұрын
TheBritFix it has to be totally dry before refrigerator otherwise it can be rot faster. The reason is the rest of water in the fresh food. In Brazil is common to leave fresh food in the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before wash but I don’t know how to explain the reason for that, it regards to bacterias 🙂

TheBritFix Contrary to common belief water doesn’t actually preserve anything. Additionally evaporation is sped up by the movement made by the cold air blowing in the fridge. It leeches moisture out of the fruit speeding up decay.

Very true Sleepy. Most definitely, you shouldn’t wash strawberries until right before you eat them! They start going bad as soon as they get wet. If I’m at a party and I see strawberries that have been out, I know right away to stay away!

I totally disagree with 1st point. Washing some kinds of produce, especially berries, would enable them to rot faster (unless it is full of chemicals and pesticides, then probably not) - so do not wash all of it right after bringing it home - unless you'll eat all of them right away :) If you wash all of it and then forget about it for 2 days or so, you will have an unpleasant surprise in your fridge or wherever you keep them. Other than that, nice video :)

Great video Meghan! I'm with you on the washing veggies before storing. When it's time to eat it won't take me an hour to wash them then cook. Sometimes my laziness is winning and then I wash the veggies after a week being in the fridge. Bad bad! Love all your hacks 🥰🤩

I have recently begun using the silicones bags for Smoothie Prep. I'll put in my frozen fruit my spinach or whatever else I'm going to need for a smoothie (vegetable and fruit wise), then put it in the freezer and pull out a bag when I need one.

Wash your produce. Store herbs and vegetables in water. Fruit bowl. Freeze ripe peeped bananas/food. Use reusable silicon bags. Use glass food storage containers for reheating. Parchment paper for baking. Store compost in the freezer. Baking soda in fridge to reduce smells. Use leftovers first, keep at front. Clean as you cook. Avoid countertop clutter. Make commonly used things easy to get.

I used to often stuff a bowl or two of the items that I could not finish in the fridge to consume later. Somehow it would sit there for next 4-5 days and I would come back only to throw it away. Now a started to put that stuff into the freezer instead of the refrigerator in small glass jars for those days when I am absolutely lazy to cook and pull one out of the freezer jars to reheat and eat. Or on those days when I reach home very late and don't have the time to cook up a meal even from prepped items (which I regularly do). Feels much better to not waste food. Yay!

Instead of parchment paper I bought a silicone mat for my oven, it works great and has unlimited use so I think it's the best solution to reduce waste, plus you don't need oil for cooking since food won't stick to it (if you want to avoid oil)

I really agree with you on the use of parchment paper -- it's way more practical than aluminum foil and comes in both the traditional paper or a reusable silicon format. But, I'm not sure that we actually need to promote the use of any more plastic bags and containers, when glass options are so much healthier and far more eco-friendly. Some of the small veggie end-bits can be used for making soup instead of simply discarding it as compost. Keep spices way from the top of the stove to avoid drying-out nutrients and flavours. If you’re leaving cupboard doors open, it may mean that you don’t actually need them, so feel free to simply remove them for a more practical workflow and to avoid injuries. You've provided some really great tips, so please keep up the good work! ***Side Note: Your audio signal on this one video is a little weak***

Great tips! And yes, I leave cupboards open and even drawers. Ouch! And then run into them haha. One thing I am going to do is to reduce the number of herbs and spices I use. I mean, is it necessary to have three different forms of dry mustard and mustard seeds? And then the herbal blends AND the individual herbs as well? I was looking at the ridiculous amount of space I have for herbs and spices in my little kitchen and decided at least a third of them must GO!

If you plan to use some of your frozen bananas for smoothies, Dr Alan Christianson (NMD) recommends the resistant starch in them, BUT ESPECIALLY in the peels. You can easily blend them into a smoothie with no discernible taste difference. I have lots of quirky habits, but I cannot stand cupboard doors or drawers being left open.

Save your carrot tops, onion skins, mushroom stems, greens stems, etc. that you would normally compost in a large sealable bag in your freezer until it is full then put all in a pot with water to make really yummy vegetable broth.

Hi there. I think your video is very well done. Enough people have already talked about the strawberries, so I won’t say anything about that. But I do wish you had put the camera on the kitchen as a whole more rather than on yourself and close-ups of things. We can still listen to you talk while the video shows us other things. That way we could see how the kitchen is laid out. Other than that, great video.

Okay possibly a stupid question - but storing the greens and herbs in jars of water - can you just keep them out on the counter then or do they need to go in the fridge? (I assume out on the counter due to the comment about making it look like a bouquet).
