Found broken off pieces of the old worm gear in amoungst the grease. Just thought I’d mention to look out for that. Excellent video! Explained patiently and in plain language.

Great instructions! I was able to repair my 18 year-old KSP150. The only suggestion I would make would be to explain when the worm gear needs replacement, and to show a damaged worm gear. My mixer started to make a rapid clacking noise when it was turning. Fortunately, when I opened up the mixer according to these instructions, I saw right off that several teeth of the worm gear had been sheared off. Again, well done!

Great video. I bought the whole worm gear assembly, on Amazon rather than just the gear, and used this video to repair and extend the life of our 20+ year-old stand mixer. Thanks for posting!

I really like your video, very good stepwise explanation, let me add a recommendation, if the worm gear is broken you really should remove all old grease and not reuse it, because the broken parts of the old worm gear (the dents) are partwise in the grease and you do not want to ruin your new wheel with this. :-)

Just fixed my broken gear. This was up there with one of the best “how to” videos I’ve watched. Instructions were to the “t”. You do need to know how to use basic tools and have a little bit of a “handy-person” in you, but other than the messy grease, it’s an easy fix. Thank you! Never mind what that loser said about the ball peen hammer; appreciate a free video that shows how to do a job that would be nearly impossible to do w/o this tutorial. Kudos!

I would like to add a note about the grease. KitchenAid mixers specify part number 4176597, which is a black colored BENALENE 930-2 grease. This is a grease designed to run at higher temperatures. Not all of the 930-2 greases are food grade H-1 registered with the NSF. The one made by Microlubol is, and the 6oz jar at Amazon is enough to generously grease your gears twice. This is a superior lubricant compared to the standard H-1 white gear grease, which I found to be almost immediately disappointing. When you take the mixer apart to get at the gears, clean it like crazy. Don't just wipe the old grease off, get down into the gear teeth with a toothpicks and an old toothbrush. Wipe things off with a lint free rag; you'll need several of them. Work the new grease into the teeth and coat the shafts and washers. Put things back together and spoon on even more grease. If, after all this work and carefully putting things back together, you find that the mixer runs a bit slow and might freeze for an instant once in a while, it's either because the grease is too thick or the replacement worm gear is NOT exactly the same as the factory part. Many of the imported gears are "close enough" but not exactly perfect. It may be the best idea to spend a few extra dollars and buy the OEM official KitchenAid gear. If you didn't do the crazy-level cleaning and find this stop & go issue, you may still have a bit of crud in the gear teeth. Take things apart, get the right parts and grease, and do it again the right way this time.

Great video, good pace, descriptive, nice close ups. Easy to follow for a successful repair. Just a note, some screws on my machine were square heads rather than flathead. Maybe an updated machine, or different screws due to being an Aus model.

Thanks for the video. It helped a lot when I replaced the worm gear and the grease on my wife's Kitchenaid mixer. The only problem I had was with the screws. The model Classic Plus, bought in the US, has square heads on most of the screws, instead of the regular flat heads. Not hex, not torx, but Robertson square. Fortunately, one of my smaller flat screwdrivers fit diagonally on the head and I was able to unscrew them. I'll try to find a Robertson screwdriver in a hardware store to tighten the screws a bit more next week. Otherwise, the video is spot on how to replace the worm gear.

Had to do this again after 5 years. This time I'm going with a factory part, so hopefully it'll last longer. (It's also important to obey the instructions in the manual about not trying to knead dough faster than speed 2.) It's important to fish out the pieces of the old gear, or just replace all the grease. You don't want pieces of the old gear getting ground up in the teeth of the new one.

There are two washers, equal size/thickness, one on each end of the worm gear. Make sure you save the washers when removing the old gear and reinstall them, one on each end, with the new worm gear.

Check the small metal drive gear at the bottom of the same stack where the nylon worm gear is. I had one where that metal gear ground itself down, the cost to replace the whole stack wasn’t much more than just the worm gear.

On Newer KitchenAid mixers you will need an S1 sqare bit for the body screws and a ⅛ hex for the pedestal if you choose to remove it although I typically find that's not necessary necessary on North American Tiltedhead mixers.

Thank you for the excellent video. I'm working on a KitchenAid model K5SSWH serial WD2522320. It was making some odd noises. When I opened the top cover, I noticed a loose 10-24 nut in the electric motor compartment. It's a plain 10-24 machine nut. It fell off one of the stator hold down studs. I noticed the nuts on your mixer are the aircraft locking type (with the nylon ring)? Fix.com wants $23.88 for one lock nut? Are these available at the local hardware store? Are there enough threads to engage the nylon locking ring? Or just put the plain nut back on with some red bearing grade Loctite?

I put the worm gear back it but it's really rough to spin still. Seems like the long piece that goes through the centre of it has resistance for some reason. Even without the worm gear in, just spinning the other gear in place, it's got resistance to turning....

I wonder why not clean off as much of the old grease and re-grease with new clean grease. And what I mean by clean is if the worm gear is damaged those pieces that have sheared off have to have gone somewhere. As a bicycle mechanic I always clean off all old grease and regrease when working on the moving parts of a bicycle . Also as the commentors below Josh Goldberg and Jeffery V pointed out, this video should have started with showing a bad gear and the running of the mixer with the bad gear so we can hear if the sound is similar to what we are experiencing. Other than that this is a very useful and well done video and I appreciate the demonstration.

Trick: submerge overnight the entire gear assy into a bowl with paint thinner (acetone doesn't work). Next morning, remove and drop into another bowl with 99% Isopropyl alcohol. Let sit 1h, remove and let dry at air. Now you have a pristine assembly to work on. May want to do the same for the gearbox case. Remember to grease all shafts before placing back gears and inside the sleeve bearings.

my gears seemed OK, but there was no pin inside with worm gear assembly. a badly bent was found inside, with almost an L shaped bend. Ever seen this before? Should I try to replace just the pin, or the whole gear assembly?
@FixDotCom

That pin definitely took a huge strain if it was bent. If the hole where the pin is elongated, replace the gear. If the hole is perfectly round and not damaged go for just the pin.

The grease is cheap, clean out the old grease and use new. The old stuff has pieces of the chewed up gear in it and will immediately start abrading the new gear, drastically shortening its life.

That pin is normally very hard to remove. Use a large enough hammer and make sure the shaft is properly supported when striking the pin punch.

Definitely wear gloves and do this on a much larger (covered) work surface than the one pictured here. Another missing but absolutely critical step is to either thoroughly clean the old existing grease by removing any small rubber or metallic particles that may have broken off from the old gear or discard the old grease and use new grease (they sell 'food grade grease' that looks suitable). Any particles in the old grease will grind against the new one and ruin it very quickly.

OK I switched it on and it worked. You cannot turn the mechanism using the shaft; too much gear resistance I suppose.

I bought a new gear and when I took it all apart per the excellent video I found the pin holding the pinion gear to the shaft was missing allowing the gear to spin freely. I searched all thru the case and all the extra grease but never found it. I used a cotter pin instead and it seems to work fine. The mixer was given to us because it wouldn't work, maybe someone tried to fix it first
