until this video, I wasn't aware that the PROPER gear material was Kevlar and that the "cheap knock-offs" did not have either that same material and/or had an inferior method of how the hub attached to the plastic portion. In viewing other viewers' comments i can see that they learned the hard way about the difference! You have very useful videos addressing typical repair/maintenance issues for these mixers.

I’ve also heard that some of the newer ones are all metal gears so that while the worm gear may last longer, when it breaks, it’ll be irreparable due to binding issues.

Spectacular tutorial! Very educational for my current situation. Now let me educate you on proper gear names… What you are replacing is properly called a helical gear, designed to be quieter in car transmissions and great forrr…. Worm gear driven applications. The long screw like gear driving your Kevlar helical? THAT is your worm gear.

Thanks for the video, though I had a question, I bought a worm gear (before seeing your video) the description says it is an OEM part (and it came in a "whirlpool factory certified part" bag) but the gears are black (instead of yellow) do you know if they changed colors recently? The part states it was manufactured in 2021 and doesn't spin freely.
@MrMixer3162 жыл бұрын
Yes they switched to black about a year ago, however it should free spin. Did you buy the whole tower or just the gear?
@lorenlasko87412 жыл бұрын
@@MrMixer316 thanks for that conformation. I was just talking about the worm gear not the whole tower. I gear itself doesn't spin free on the bearings (like you showed it shouldn't in the video) so I assumed it was genuine OEM but the color was concerning me. Thanks for making me feel better before making the repair, love the videos they are very informative

I have a KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer KSM150, which is about 5 years old. Recently it had some big noises and thus I changed the worm gear as well as grease. Now it can spin quietly without anything in the bowl, but when it is making a dough with a flat beater it occasionally gets stuck and stops spinning (motor still sounds running) until it slowly gets over it.
