My mother had a 1950s Kitchen Aid that lasted until the early 90s with heavy use. She was sad when it finally died. I have the Classic which gets moderate use, and has been going strong for 20 years…it will do bread dough…but it does shake on the counter so you have to hold onto it for the 8-10 minutes that it’s kneading…and it does get hot doing that, but it does it well. I do like baking bread, and the Pro model is massively on sale at Costco right now…mmm…trying to talk myself into it…320$ in 2022…fantastic deal.

I have the Artisan with a glass bowl. Love it. It is extremely rare to find in the stores and can be seen on most cooking shows because it allows better photography of the ingredients.

I've had an Ultra Power Kitchen aid since 1999. I bought the pro six quart but it's too tall for my cabinetry. I am returning it for either an Ultra Power Plus or an Artisan. The bowl is much easier for me to attach on the tilt head models. Kitchen Aid is the best product ever! There are so many styles, sizes and colors. All there is to do is find the right one for your needs and kitchen.

My 1961 KA gets serviced every five years - I use it alot. The 745 Watt, top-of-the-line my grandkids gave me for Christmas...yeah, it didn't make it to Easter. After Whirlpool bought KA, they lowered the quality to junk. Pity. If you want one, get a used one from back when they were made by Hobert.

It's always disappointing when quality product manufactureres start to cut corners. My professional 6 mixer started making a bunch of noise, so I took it apart only to find that KitchenAid started using plastic transmission housings some time ago. The housing on my unit broke so the gears were grinding. I ordered the old style metal transmission housing from KitchenAid, installed it and it has been fine sence. The housing was about $12. Why the hell would a company risk its reputation by using cheap parts just to save a couple of bucks!!!??? The old units are about bullet proof and can be found veary inexpensively at garage sales and thrift stores. I have cleaned up, put new brushes in the motors and cleaned out and refilled the gear boxes with KitchenAid grease on four used units. I give them to freinds to enjoy.

From what I have read, the plastic gears are meant as a safety concern. The gears will break much easier and not cause serious injuries when it comes to mixing. For example a spoon caught in the bowl will break the gears rather than it whirl around cause damage. Those are found in the artisan line rather than the professional or classic series. The plastic gears are easy and cheap to replace if something were to break.

The classic and Artisan do not have soft-start mechanisms. The speed control in needs tilted models is the same design Hobart used before they sold KitchenAid to whirlpool. But it just start slowly if they had been adjusting properly at the factory. Actually many people complain that these tilthead models start too fast. The Artisan h Classic use the same body so you can buy a 5-quart bowl and use it on the classic. Also KitchenAid does not sell the 4.5 quart stainless steel bowl without handle alone but you can buy the 4.5 quart bowl that does have a handle and that is a flat handle that does not have grips. Actually I kind of like not having a handle because the bowls can be stacked without it. I also find that I can actually grip the bottom of the Tilthead style bowls quite easily and firmly when pouring out batter.

Only the 3.5 Mini Artisan has a soft start. It make a difference. Also, it is made with all metal gears and a DC motor , so it does not over heat like my 5 qt Artisan did( got rid of that one), Replaced the 5 qt with a Pro Line 7 for DC motor and all metal gears.

I can't for the life of me figure out if mine is a Classic or Artisan. It has a handle on the bowl like an Artisan but only weighs 23 pounds, closer to a Classic. This video says the Classic only comes in black and white but mine is red. Mine didn't come with a pouring shield, consistent with the Classic. I realize this video is a couple of years old and things might have changed.
