As a vegetarian, I would like to thank you for trying these. This video was entertaining as hell. I kind of want to see you try Beyond meat items, because it's definitely a better tasting brand and I feel like you're more likely going to like more than one item. Gardenburgers are a classic veggie burger choice that is great without really aiming to replicate tasting like meat.

As a a vegetarian, sometimes just having something that can be eaten in a familiar/nostalgic way is fine by me, aka I'm fine with visibly obvious veggies delivered in a disc shape that I can eat in a burger bun. Other times, I want that more meaty, chewy imitation experience where the veggies are being stealthy. Both are okay! They're different moods

For any confused vegans/vegetarians: products labeled “Earth Grown” are vegetarian and those labeled “Earth Grown Vegan” are vegan friendly

Most of the vegetarians I know don’t want meatless products that replicate meat. They just want a good replacement that allows them to participate (i.e., burger patty so they can join burger night, etc). Spouse is a lifelong vegetarian and used to love Gardenburger but they’ve been discontinued. He doesn’t like the Impossible type stuff.

Oh really? I'm vegetarian and most of the vegetarians I know want meat style food, as do I. I think it may depend on why a person is veggie. I went veggie for ethical and environmental reasons but always loved the taste of meat. Anything I can get that replicates it is great!
@kniddelliz751211 ай бұрын
That's very interesting. Like myself, most vegetarians I know do not want anything that is too similar to real meat. For that reason, I prefer a bean burger to beyond meat, for instance. The good thing is that there is an alternative for everybody 😊

Lidl's are much much better imo. If you live in the US, you maybe don't have Lidl there, which is Aldi's main competitor in Germany, where both companies were started and both available in basically all of Western Europe.

the chicken replacements are my absolute favorite they're sooooo good i only have texture issues with regular meat because i'm thinking about how it's stringy because it's the muscle fiber of an animal and then i just cannot eat it, but i'm fine with that texture from something that isn't a muscle, just a weird vegetable thing lol but the point of meatless meat isn't always to make it as close to meat as possible. sometimes it's just to have something to bring to like a cookout or throw into a lunch so that you can blend in and also "have a burger" or "have a little bit of chicken nuggets". it's way more of a social thing i think. i never have gotten veggies burgers for solo ventures, i always got them for when i was going to a cookout.

Im not vegan or vegetarian, but I have found if you go into these "meat substitutes" not thinking about them as meat substitutes they become way more enjoyable. Like obviously some are just not great, but if you aren't going into a veggie burger with the expectation of it giving you a meat experience you are going to have a much better time 🤷♀️

@odyssey_eight11 ай бұрын
In fairness, vegan and vegetarian options can be super hit or miss especially when it comes down to texture. I know some vegans can be very critical and harsh when it comes down to critiques of the plant based options and substitutes, but you're valid in expressing your textural concerns. Being open to these options is great! But just like with non plant based foods, its fine for things to not be right for you. Theres some really high quality brands out there that make super great plant based options that hit every pillar including texture. Gardein, Daring, and Impossible all are my go to options for being sure I'll be okay texture wise. Morningstar farms can be hit or miss for me depending on what it is. Ive had some truly awful veggie dogs, and some really amazing ones. I think yall would do better with trying name brand vegan products sometime. But thank you for trying these options anyways
@jillianlee27411 ай бұрын
I think it’s worth saying that when I was vegan my palate changed dramatically. I wasn’t looking for items that taste and feel and look like meat (or I’d just…eat meat) I just wanted savory items adding protein to my meals. No veggie meat texture has ever grossed me out bc there’s nothing gross in there lol unlike real burgers and nuggets.
@TriforceLiz11 ай бұрын
Yup, as a texture-sensitive person who struggled with meat, vegan/veggie food typically never grosses me out the way meat used to, and I think it's in part because I know what's in there. The beyond meat/highly processed stuff on the other hand, can give me some grief 😅
@liamowens265811 ай бұрын
even as someone who has texture issues, whenever I was vegetarian I was never grossed out or uncomfortable with meatless products like I have been and still sometimes am by meat now that I'm back to eating meat. it's one of the reasons I'm thinking of returning to being a vegetarian.

I think a comparison of Aldi brands to the name brands they’re duplicating like Morningstar Farms, etc would be helpful. I’ve been a vegetarian since 1991 so my memories of meat are loooong gone and I just legitimately enjoy vegetarian meat substitutes. I didn’t realize Aldi had their own line of products and I’d love to know how they compare - not to actual meat products but to other veggie products.
@Alexandra-xv1qm11 ай бұрын
Totally understand why they wouldn't be appealing to a non-vegan, but as as someone who rarely eats meat, everything they rated as "pretty good" I felt like were really good! haven't tried the "just okay" products so can't vouch for them, but I think it's worth trying. The patty is kind of similar to morning star, the nuggets to the Trader Joes' ones, and I liked the veggie patty a lot for lazy nights.
@laulau19411 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's always tough watching meat eaters do these kind of ratings because I guess if you're expecting meat instead of its own thing, it's easier to be disappointed. It definitely took a few years for me to be able to enjoy meat substitutes on their own terms.
@megacoraltree57611 ай бұрын
The veggie patties do tend to be softer (mushy lol) but I think they have a good mild flavor. I feel like it's because they have less grains overall compared to the Morningstar ones. I remember thinking the sausages were ok. Better if they are on a sandwich or tortilla. The meatballs are good. The classic one can be broken down into ground "beef" for tacos or other recipes too. For the price they are worth checking out. It has been awhile since I have been there though

Most veggie burgers aren't actually trying to replicate meat burgers -- like Jen said, they are just a savory thing to be able to put on a bun. There is a lot of coded language in the names of products that try tell you whether it's trying to imitate a meat or trying to fill the niche of a meat product. it's super inconsistent across brands and normally you just have to look at the picture xD
