I can actually understand why akira just nodded his head and listened to gordon's scolding without saying anything back. In most asian households we're taught to nod, accept and agree with them since childhood, the silence is to show respect to the elders, talking back or even giving opinions is often seen as rude.

As an asian, I can fully understand why Akira just nodded and kept quiet when Gordon was scolding him, it was a way to show respect. @@Freaky_Lemonade No. He's saying that Akira's behaviour i.e being non-confrontational when being scolded is typical of ppl who are born and raised in Japan. Conventionally, it's not a good thing to have an "in-your-face" attitude in Japan so Akira probably did not say anything when he was scolded by Gordon about his work, particularly since there was merit in the criticism. Also, in Japanese work culture, when you are criticised that much for your work (particularly in the service industry where Japan prides itself in having great customer service) it can be seen as shameful so I can understand why he is very quiet and a little flustered when Gordon is screaming at him. The biggest problem is his wife. Not that she doesn't support him, she destroyed him mentally. See how Akira has changed back to his old self, he got his passion back, energized, motivated, corrected his little mistake, he smiled and happy but then Lisa just sitting there, waited her chance for him to make a mistake and blame him. See how she said she think he doesn't work hard enough and "worried" about he is not gonna ever be the chef that he should be? that is a legit toxic and strong negative thought which can cause him to demotivated and feel bad. Akira didn't blame her anything or angry at her at all as he truly loved his family. A true gentleman he is. Lastly, his children's are beautiful and kind hearted.

I am baffled why they married, he is clearly a traditional Japanese man which neither Gordon or his wife understand. He cannot believe she would shame him like that in front of Gordon and the TV, while Gordon doesn't understand you cannot talk so bluntly to Japanese people. His wife sucked the life out of him, man of such culture doesn't know how to react to a bitchy wife when such expressions are frowned upon and never discussed in private let alone public. Not a healthy culture IMO but it is what it is and you gotta respect it.

I'm Asian myself and I'm not Japanese but sometimes I do that because I'm afraid to speak up especially to my mom because I'm afraid she's gonna be mad at me but I have to overcome that habit as adult. it s clearly a breakdown of communication between different genders and cultures. Please no one are villains here. And men didn't know how to express their feelings and just being avoidant. It is cross culture. I think Akira was kind of depressed and his wife as well. They expressed in a very different way. One walked away and the other stepped in more, making the other more angry and frustrated. I do think the whole family had too much financial pressure to function normally. This can happen to any family. They needed both a practical way out and some counselling service. Hope all the best for them.

@@tendax8912 *The main toxic part is the "supress your own opinion part"* Because even though you're being scolded for doing something wrong: One have to remember that people usually *do* things wrong _because_ of another person ( _instructions unclear, misunderstandings, frustrations, feelings that they couldn't speak about until they inevitably broke out into a fit of rage, etc._ ) If you are not allowed to speak your mind about the situation, then there will never be a mutual understanding of what went wrong and one party always gets to feel worse than the other. Especially for children who barely even understands their feelings to begin with. Having to supress your feelings, because "it's wrong/disrespectful to speak your mind about something", is not a good thing for a child to be enforced to learn. And imagine going around feeling like your feelings are wrong, evne though you feel those feelings for a reason. Akira must be felt guilty to move to another place but he didn't want his family know how he felt. He felt he dishonored himself for being the patriach of the family and even worse, he might want to commit suicide at some point because suicide rate is so high in Japan. The simple fact that Gordon used Akira's sons pictures on the wall means so much.

I never cried while watching this show. Today I was crying my eyes out. The pain and hopelessness was so real and visible. It was hard to watch. I really wish them all the best, especially Akira and his beautiful children. They deserve the best. ❤️

This guys wasn't rude at all. It's the culture. And it's not a stereotype. Majority of Asian especially Japanese know how to behave at other people place. I remember that one time a bunch of white people naked at the top of Mount Kinabalu. Soon after, there is earth-quake and it destroy they house near that mountain. That's why you should respect the rule at the place where you are there. You probably don't believe the culture but respect it.

absolutely! and the son's reaction was also just what you'd expect! when he said: "that's my picture!" you can hear from his voice that he was honoured to have his photos hung up on the walls of his dad's restaurant! I love it

I like how Ramsey understood how draining and toxic the wife was and told her to shut up 🎉 Akira is broken but trying so hard to keep it together .he deserves to be acknowledged for it

The wife has shown it from the beginning when they meet Chef Ramsay: 1. Dancing like an idiot to greet the guests 2. Do the talking a lot 3. Doesn't like The Sushi Pizza and rolling her eyes. I understand the Sushi Pizza is bizarre, maybe recommend any other food to him? Good thing Chef Ramsay is a smart man and noticed that.

@@margarethmichelina5146 not just that but the sushi pizza was done badly and was disgusting...the badly stored food. But sorry...you cannot fault her for not liking the disgusting food .nevermind that her dancing shouldn't be an idiotic thing to you ...so what if she dances ? Yes their relationship is toxic but come on.

@@margarethmichelina5146 thats a little harsh. So what if she danced, probably just feeling goofy because of having a celebrity chef and a bunch of cameras around. Maybe she acts silly like this to try and get her husband to smile again. We shouldn't judge them. We do not know if Akira broke down first, or if the wife wore him down, or if life got them both down. She might have started to talk so much because Akira quit talking. The sushi pizza was probably to blame for all their problems

Gordon telling Lisa “back off. I’m not fucking around.” Was so satisfying. Also when he told her to “cut him some slack”. Akira isn’t perfect, but she was definitely a huge reason as to why he was so disconnected from his family and that restaurant. I can’t imagine the emotional burden she’s been putting on him throughout the years.
