More excellent professional and comprehensive advice. The biggest mistake I made with the first kitchen I built for my wife was basing the design on the architect's advice and not my wife's opinions. I am still reminded of the chronic design deficiency and dysfunctionality of that first attempt whenever we have a robust discussion relating to a disagreement relating to kitchen design. Some of recommendations for creating a functional and comfortable working kitchen is incorporating as many drawers as practically possible. We started with one bank of 5 plus 2 pot drawers in our first kitchen and have 52 total in the kitchen I am just finishing in our downsizing home we are renovating. Various sized drawers provide easy access to cupboard space otherwise wasted or very awkward to reach with shelving. Another factor we have found works really well is to specifically build a bench top space to hold almost all small appliances - mixers/toaster etc. Not just an "appliance cupboard" as such but a bench space against a wall with usually wall cupboards at a sufficient height above with the worktop/bench space about 800mm deep rather than the standard 600mm. This allows mixers for example to be pulled forward during use with plenty of room without having to move them to another area. In order to create this width of top (if you have room) we have the standard cabinets 200mm of the wall and usually have the wall ovens and fridge in the same alignment. This gives room for services, ventilation and the depth required for most modern family sized fridges so the do not protrude into the circulation areas. Elevation of built in appliances to provide ease of use does not have to be restricted to wall ovens. Drawer type dishwashers can easily be lifted off the floor to provide a height for unloading into adjacent reachable drawers. Conventional dishwashers can also be elevated to a height that allows operation without the tedious bending down - its a real pain at our age. And don't let any tradie tell you that it can't be done. It just takes a little thought and patience.

I especially appreciated the comments about making sure that the doors and drawers had room to open without colliding, and also pointing out that walls are not necessarily completely square. It's really important to allow a little extra clearance for those items. Your other points were all equally helpful.

The biggest mistake I made was putting too much emphasis on symmetry. That emphasis cost me space for a possible mini breakfast bar and additional storage. I didn’t realize that asymmetrical spaces can be pretty too and maybe necessary for the available space.

It's funny because Asians are deathly allergic to symmetry. We seek balance, but avoid symmetry.

Based on some I know who have moved into a home and inherited a kitchen, they sometimes rip it out and replace it too soon. I think that you gain so much by taking a little time, live with it, and get a feel for what works for you and what does not - you may be surprised! And by having a better appreciation of what you like (and do not) you will have valuable information which you can share with a professional designer, who will be helped in their task. I also think that many are sold on the idea of the 'perfect kitchen', when in reality it is nearly always a compromise, and that as I have found myself, more than one compromise solution may be possible - it is a matter of choosing which compromise you will be most comfortable with. For example my sister has replaced her 'difficult' kitchen, and to avoid the problem you highlighted with clashing handles has gone with doors with the handle being a groove on the top or bottom edge. Don't get me wrong, they work well and look fantastic, but are becoming increasingly difficult for our mother to use! From personal experience I know that to get what was needed while maintaining something which didn't jar to the eye took me well over a year to work out. The irony is that all the compromises I was forced to make, could have been avoided if the kitchen had just 200mm more in each dimension! P.S. I do wish that I had been able to have the services of someone like you, but unfortunately, budget constraints meant that I had to rework rather than replace.

My galley kitchen needs a complete gut job due to structural issues in an exterior wall and floor joists, and the forty-year-old contractor-grade oak cathedral-front cabinets and laminate countertops are in dreadful shape, and the dominant color is puke-yellow like a bowl of vanilla pudding that has been left uncovered in the fridge for a week. Rolled sheet vinyl flooring is holding up not too badly considering its age, but it was hideous when it was new. The doors to the dining room and to the breakfast room (opposite ends of the galley) need to be widened and the ninety-year-old windows need replacement. There goes most of the budget.

Think about the length of the countertops. Most have 2 sizes of standard and jumbo. If you DO NOT want any seams then KNOW the counter materials and costs. If I had my kitchen with one smaller pantry I could have had NO seams. Plus I could have avoided having to buy an extra slab. (I have quartz counters). I don’t regret what the layout is. I love it and the full backsplash including the “to the ceiling” behind the cooktop. I just wanted to share the one thing that you may want to consider. Also if I could do it all over again I would have done “press to open” to avoid having handles and also a cleaner look. ❤love the channel❤

Hi Michael, design question: This is a small galley kitchen. On the outside wall (161") we have the sink in front of the centered window. To the right is the 30" cooktop with hood concealed in a 30" cabinet and an 18" x 40"H wall cabinet against the right wall. To keep the look symetrical, our designer is recommending a 48"W x 40"H cabinet to the left of the sink with 2- 24" doors. I don't think it is a good idea to have doors that open out so far past the countertop. Would it be better to mirror the other side with an 18" and 30" cabinet? Would so appreciate your input. Thanks.

Hello, I have an L shape kitchen ( with an island) and my stove is closer to the corner where there is no cabinet on the side wall. I have the recommended minimum counter working space between the stove and the side wall. I am concerned there could be cooking splashes on that side wall. Should I continue the tiles onto the side wall only for the space between the countertop and upper cabinet for the depth of the counter top or should I tile the entire height of the side wall ? Thanks for your tip, really appreciate it.

Thank you.We are currently designing our kitchen ,so far so good except for the bin and recycling bin. Our council have now decided we are having a big blue bag with velcro fastenings for cardboard and paper along side the blue bin for glass,plastic and tin(no tetrapaks anymore). Therefore in the kitchen I need a new space for cardboard and paper as well as the original small bins for household rubbish(landfill) and the original recycling. Any ideas?? I feel you could do a whole video on it! Many thanks

Thank you. We're in the process of designing our house, and I'm struggling with the kitchen. Questions such as 'Where should the sink go? The hob? The refrigerator? Is there any rule that can help me decide?
@kitchinsider
@kitchinsider 2 жыл бұрын
No 'rules' as such, but the work triangle is a classic design principle that can help with this. I'll also think of the layout in working 'zones'. What makes most sense for a practical and functional working layout. It all depends on the space you have and the way you like to work ultimately. If in doubt, go have a chat with your local kitchen design company!

@kitchinsider
@kitchinsider 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 😊 I don't know about making one yourself. It's the cable management you need to be careful about. Pulling the drawer in and out could damage the cable if not done correctly. I've used these in the past and they work great. Just need to check your drawer has enough space behind for the mechanism and height for the face plate inside. Europe version link - dockingdrawer.com/collections/rest-of-world-outlets/products/docking-drawer-trio?variant=12295021527063 Simple enough to install. You might need an electrician to install a socket(outlet) in the cabinet to plug it in to. Hope that helps!
