Nice video, just one point on the safety release landing. If you had of made sure the flag line was at the top, in this case I believe you would have had to land on the other side, the kite will settle almost instantly because its being pulled down into the correct position. It is more advanced to understand this but I always check wind direction and which side the kite will be landed and rig my flag line accordingly so that it will be the upper line. I'm sure you are aware of this but I feel it's important and useful to point out to the the viewers.

Hello, Thanks for your comment. We previously added a note of this in the video description. It's true the probability of the kite reaching a settled position is higher but we have found with different kite models, brands & sizes the reliability of this method changes greatly. I think if we have time in the future we will make another video looking specifically at this technique using a variety of kites.

I would add to also give the lower arm on the bar a quick yank just before u pull the safety. If you get to kite to turn towards the ground at the last minute it never drifts back up even with surf kites in high wind

The crash landing and drag launching descriptions are right on. A couple of little tweaks that work for me: 7:47 With the drag launch method, if the kite gets 'stuck' it can help to take a step towards it to entice it to roll a bit further onto its back. At least, that is the case with my Cabrinha Switch Blade and, especially, high aspect Apollo. When starting the drag launch, standing a bit further upwind reduces the amount of drag, and hence the potential wear and tear on the kite, that is required.

When self landing by pulling the quick release, it makes a difference which wing tip, left or right, is resting on the ground. If the flagged center line that remains with the tension is up, the kite will flag out nicely with the leading edge down and turned into the wind. If the center flag line with tension is the lower line, then the kite will behave as in the video and likely invert. Brendan and Ronja hope to join you in Egypt when travel is safer. Big Ups, Eric

Hey Eric, Thanks for your comment and feedback, your point is absolutely right and we have made a note of this in the video description. Personally, if no anchor point is available, I am usually using the crash technique for self landing with the backup option of pulling the safety release. That's why I am usually not concerned about which side is the best for the release method as the end result is the same with safely landing the kite. But for sure if your prefered method is the safety release technique it makes sense to release on the side with the safety line on top, and will also look much smoother on the beach :) Hopefully, see you on a trip soon! Brendan

As a beginner, a couple of times I have drifted to places where there's no one to help me land. So I wouldn't necessarily say this is for advanced kiters, but the kiter should definitely have good instincts in terms of emergency release.
@TheRiderExperience3 жыл бұрын
Hi James, this is true in case of an emergency landing and it is always good safety practise to keep the release procedure in mind and be ready to release the kite if any problems occur when doing a self landing. Thank you.

I often self launch on a beach with many small stones and another one with many oysters shells. Due to so the dragging method is not good for convenience or kites wear I wonder if it would not be possible after good check of the lines laying in launching angle, to let the kite in upside down position and move back to the bar while firmly holding it with 1 front line, then hook and launch in this perfect position without any drag?? Do you have ever experienced this technique?😎

Pull that safety when halfway between 11 and the ground.
@danielleclerc48123 жыл бұрын
Hello. Excellent explanations. But with the dragging method, won't it be safer to launch towards the sea as you did with the oher methods.
@TheRiderExperience3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, Daniel! On this day the wind was cross onshore so with the dragging method and the other techniques if anything were to go wrong you would be pulled downwind so really it would not make much of a difference in this case what side the kite is on as long as there is some space either side and plenty of space downwind. Thanks, Brendan

Mosto of the times I self launch rotating on the sand, the bridle line get stuck on the tip when the rotation is starting an the kite is starting to inflate. Then, with the bridle line stuck on the tip, the kite goes into a fast loop into the power zone until it hits the ground. What am I doing wrong? 😢

Hard to imagine a bag being a good thing to secure your kite to. Works in those super light winds but my guess is a lot of people watching this video will have varying conditions. I suggest people find something strong to secure to, or use a different method than taught here.
@TheRiderExperience3 жыл бұрын
Hello, Thanks for you comment, on our beach we did not have many attachment point options to anchor the kite to so due to this we found a big rock to put in our kite bag that worked well for our situation (We did make a note in the video that they should make sure something heavy is in the bag if you using this option. I have made a new note in the video description mentioning about this and other commen anchoring points. Cheers, Brendan :)
@40hills13 жыл бұрын
I appreciate this video, but hooking the chicken loop to a kite bag?? No way. Use a proper kite anchor or line with shackle attached to something like a post or log.
@TheRiderExperience3 жыл бұрын
Hey Wind Runner, Definitely not to an empty kite bag or a bag with a kite in ;) There was a very heavy rock on the beach that we put in the kite bag, so plenty of weight to then use the bag as an anchor. But for sure there are many options and you can use what's around or even pre-make one if there a fixed object.
@onurguner52862 жыл бұрын
You were not overpowered with 9! And no good use of the bag, please responsibly remove that part for a proper safe procedure instruction.
