If it makes you feel better I also drilled the tail wrong on my Cruzer and had to replace those brackets, that was my 4 month delay waiting for parts due COVID, now another 3 months waiting for my permit to fly due lock down. I just hope it’s worth the wait 😬

What a coincidence, I just ordered my airplane kit today too. I'm building a Guillow Sky Streak. Some don't care for its short endurance, but it suites my needs, and budget.

Recommend you 'plug' unused rivet holes with low profile Domed head rivets; just to reduce the possibility of cracks developing and propagating over time. Where the Zenith Bolt head clearance cutout (hole) is very close to the bolt clearance cutout (hole) in your seat pan - the ones which you made to clear the seat rail fasteners - you may wish to make the two adjacent cutouts into a single oblong one and install a Doubler around its periphery (using CS'K rivets) to increase local strength. The holes may possibly be too close and a crack might occur with the passage of time ... but that's just taking the very cautious route, probably 'over cautious" for most. Impeccable work on your part as usual, well done (two thumbs up).

Aluminum motorcycle wheels, frames, and other components have been powder coated by the manufacturers forever with no issues. I think you will be ok.
@arpeltier
@arpeltier 3 жыл бұрын
6061-T6 begins to lose some of its strength after being exposed to temps above about 375F. Most powdercoaters cure at 400F. Just because everyone does it, doesn't mean they do it properly for the material you're providing them. Powdercoaters also don't tend to be metallurgists. I think he is probably fine and I don't know what material the wheels are made from, but he is smart to have been concerned about it and I would stick to powdercoating just the parts that are steel or ask if they can cure at a lower temp if you do powdercoat something aluminum.

Hi Mark, I work with aluminum square tube all the time, that 1/8" wall, 3/4" arch. square tube should work fine, my only concern using it in a cantilever configuration under the seat pan is that there could be bolt jacking on the front bolts over time, even with the second row of bolts. I say this only because I care about you and because I'm an inventor/manufacturer and have done a lot of testing with aluminum square tube in different configurations and it can be very unforgiving.

Hey Mark, still curious, have you decided on what engine and/or firewall forward package yet?? I'm fairly certain I'll go the Honda Accord late model engine, 195HP Turbo from Viking. I want liquid cooled and heated, header tank dual pumps, DUC 5 blade, VIP, no carb heat, no mixture, (let the ECU take care of that!), dual gel batteries, etc. But have you decided, on the fence, or another UL powered craft???

I've been looking at the Feb issue of Kitplanes Magazine at their engine buyers guide. The engine of choice for me is Lycoming's YI0-360-M1B Thunderbolt! 180hp, fuel injected. MADE IN THE USA!

I think Honda’s 1.5L Turbo used in N.A. markets are actually made in Anna Ohio. I know their 2.0L Turbos are as well as their V6s. Dead reliable engines.

As far as I know it's not an option for the Cruzer, but maybe Zenith could cut the hole in the top skin for it? You'd have to ask Zenith.

What powder coater do you use? I just dropped off some stuff at RMC Powder Coating in Manchester just south of Chelsea. I have never used them before. I had my control yokes on my 182 done at Bean in Ann Arbor but they like to do more production work rather than small projects. I am always looking for a good powder coater. Thanks Chuck

Honestly I'm sure just for liability. Powder coating has to be baked in an oven and that's no issue for steel. But some people have concerns about putting aluminum in an oven to cure the powder-coating. The temperatures aren't hot enough though to affect the aluminum as I'm told.
@LTVoyager
@LTVoyager 3 жыл бұрын
@@KitplaneEnthusiast A 20 minute bake at 400 F for powder coat curing is not likely to cause an issue, but since the aging temp for many aluminum alloys starts at a little over 300 F, I can see why anyone making products for a litigious industry would be cautions. Now, aging at 320 F generally takes 8+ hours, however, at 400 F, things will happen much faster. And if the furnace is not well temperature controlled, and not all powder coaters are created equal, a short excursion to 450 or 500 could well significantly weaken the part. www.theworldmaterial.com/al-6061-t6-aluminum-alloy/
