If the sun is very bright and the passenger wants to sleep, he sets the tinting at maximum. In that case the level of tinting is similar to the window with closed curtains.

It's like James Bond and his gadgets from Q. Michael always happened to need whatever feature KITT had - especially when they introduced new features they always fit hand in glove to a situation that Michael wound up in in that same episode. Like here, where he has managed to become an adult man without dying from falling asleep at the wheel. All these years as a cop and a driver - no issues with falling asleep at the wheel. The second he's in a car that can drive itself he nods off to conveniently show off one of KITT's features :D

Quite a few cars these days can do it to a certain extent, look up audi active lane assist for example. If you fall asleep on the motorway (it can detect if your hands are on the wheel or not), it will keep you in lane and beep at you, if you don't put your hands back on the wheel it will slow the car down. Its not as good as KITT, and its far from perfect, but its not bad, could save your life (but it could also be dangerous if it happens in the fast lane ofc, but most likely less dangerous than nothing at all).

When you think about it, these cops were pretty cool. They only followed Michael because they thought he was sleeping. They tried flashing him to wake him up.
