I actually saw this at the movies when it first came out. I loved it then. I love it now.

"John Gavin who is just so ridiculously handsome you just can't take your eyes off him". I had a GF who loved the movie "Back Street" with Susan Hayward and I bought it for her on DVD and we watched it together and I said afterward "OK, how much of your love of this movie is because of the movie or how fantastically handsome John Gavin is?", and she laughed and said "50/50"

I'm glad to know that your name comes from Kitty Preston! I adore this movie since I was 14 when I first watched it. I can't count how many times I've rewatched since then! What a wonderful mystery film! I think that the beautiful title comes from the evening that Kitty wore her Midnight Lace nightgown near the end of the film and we finally learn who was the person who wanted to kill her. Thank God it was a trousers nightgown, because otherwise she would have some problems that particular evening.

If you'd like to call it silly, then fine, if I were looking back now, but seeing this on AMC as a young child, it scared me rightly. Twas, in my opinion, scary...

Rex Harrison was a gifted actor and Doris day a great actress. Both showed the versatility of funny roles to serious roles as in this movie.

Is she being gaslighted or not? She is! No, she isn't! Oh, she is! Wait, she isn't! Would more costume changes help? Or make it worse?

David Herrero More costume changes could only make it BETTER.

Kitty, I just watched this movie again for the perhaps 25th time. I love this movie, and of course Doris Day. I really liked John Gavin in it, as for his acting I thought he was superb in Backstreet. For that one I needed a box of tissues. One thing that bothered me way Doris always talking to her stalker on the phone. I would have just hung up. But I guess that was needed for the scare factor. All around the acting was superb. I love hearing your review.

The movie is still effective and works very good because of his hidden suspense and the absense of obvious signs of gaslighting. The signs are not obvious because Harrison shows a kind and caring husband most of the time NOT a abusive and mean one.He listens every time to his wifes fears and tries to calm her down and relax from her worries. He disguises to her and also to others his real motives by Hitchcoks and Harrisons NOT SHOWING WHAT the husband really wants to do with his wife.

corr blimey, that's a ripper. thanks kitty. and doris.
Saw this movie on television many years ago and didn’t like it very much because I found it very predictable and the red herrings were obviously red herrings. It made the movie somewhat contrived.

Doris was better in Hitchcock's film 4 years earlier, doing the same schtick.
