I used to always buy the bag of noodles, pork hash, manapua and potato salad with shoyu on top. Yes I was a hungry kid. What a great memory!

Last time I was Back home on Oahu, in the Salt Lake area Dan the manapua man for the area was still coming by just like in 1979. He had a new van cause his old white Chevy van finally died. The memories of getting pork hash and rice cake after school almost everyday. I hope he still there next time I visit!

In Moiliili in the 1950s the manapua man was an old man walking down the road with a pole and two pails at the end, calling out. A manapua was 5 cents. So ono.

We had this in Hilo side but I think it was exclusively Ice Cream on big island but eventually he stopped coming around even before covid. The ohana and Aloha spirit couldn't pay his bills. From what I understand you have your be financial above ordinary by quite a lot to continue this service. Nostalgia is good and menu is ono kine but it truly is a dying tradition.
@gigitrinidad9212 жыл бұрын
I’m so happy to see kind tradition. My island is also known for the same traditions. It’s what we looked forward to during breaks at school and in plaza court yards while shopping. Basically those trucks were very vital because major business chains did not exist are were a rare moment to see one. So we lived off Mom & Pop stores and mobile trucks. We are cousin islands! 🌺🇵🇷🫶

I LOVE Monapua. Tried it when we were station in Hawaii. Would love to find a restaurant in NC that serves them. I miss Hawaii.
@user-sg8kq7ii3y2 жыл бұрын
People on the mainland, unless they are from Hawaii, won't know what "manapua" is. "Manapua" is word unique to Hawaii. "Bao" is what Chinese people call "manapua". So if you can find Chinese people in your area (or just go to any Chinese restaurant in your area), and ask them for "bao", they'll tell you where to find some. Most dim sum restaurants will serve bao, but they'll likely be very tiny. It's unlikely they'll be big ones like they sell in Hawaii.
@joanhawkins85522 жыл бұрын
I know, we got spoiled . We was over there in the late 70s to early 80, we went to a little place called the Monapua Factory. My daughter and I found Bao at Trader Joe's, the are good, but not even close.

Sometimes, the candy--Chicko stick, Astro pop, & Fusen gum. Hana butta days. Lol Only thing, you get too much stuff,.. watch out, somebody going high jack you, or scab off you. 😅🤣😂
