Hi Edward Birks (re: comment about dates) I can't reply directly to your comment for some reason, but I think they get around that 'decade bug' because they know there'll be no MREs that old in service circulation. It only becomes a factor to those purchasing old MREs on the civilian market, but then the bag style and menu contents can tell you which year they came from. MREinfo.com has great detail on the menus over the years, so pretty easy to cross-reference contents with the info on their site. Cheers.

I just tried this menu myself today. Mine was packed in 2013 and was nearly exactly the same as yours. The only differences were that I had peanut M&M's and orange drink powder. But what I though was really interesting was that my chicken stew was no where near as watery as yours. It came out about the same consistency as the rice. Maybe there was a slight recipe change to make it easier to eat in the field. But yours looks a lot tastier to me.
@KiwiDudeMRE10 жыл бұрын
Kelly Smith Quite a tasty MRE this one. I've found that variances in entrée (and cheese spread) consistency usually comes down to age, storage temperature, and final heating temperature. It can also be impacted by physical storage, as loose MRE's constantly on the move (such as those stored in a car or truck) can be prone to having the solid ingredients in the entrée disintegrate into the sauce. Rations that contain cans instead of retort pouches typically provide a more consistent experience.

This is from a bit after my time in terms of content, but your comment about it not being so spicy...I'd love to try some Mexican MREs (if they don't just get them as subsidy from the 'States). BUT.. Much of Mexican cuisine is not the least bit spicy. In fact much is sweet, savory or downright bland but still somehow tasty (the magic of mestizo cooking). I'd go with the other commenter and put some of that cheese spread in with the lot of it and stir the rice, stew and half the cheese spread together to make it more spicy. Yould even go crazy and use an unused Tabasco from another MRE (I always kept a few spairs) and kick it even more. Loving all these vids! Cheers mate.

Really interesting videos man, just curious how did you get into the american mres, or just mres in general? were you in the new zealand military?
@KiwiDudeMRE10 жыл бұрын
I always had an interest in military rations, but working with the Navy in the late 90's really spurred it on. Finding MRE reviews on KZbin was the final straw that tipped me into making the first video, and then it's all history from there. I'd still be eating the rations without making videos, but each one is interesting and has its own story to tell, so it kind of feels wrong to not share the experience nowadays.
@passit8d10 жыл бұрын

A while back the planets aligned and I found myself with a new camera, tripod, and some MREs sitting in the cupboard. I thought "What the heck" and filmed a video. The rest is history. It's been a fantastic journey trying rations from all over the world and interacting with awesome people through comments and messages.

@KiwiDudeMRE10 жыл бұрын
Ginelle Simmons They do, and there's a neat MRE shelf life calculator on MREinfo.com on the front page (bottom left) that can give you an estimated remaining shelf life. Unfortunately, most people buying MREs on the civil market can only guess at the average temperature a ration has been stored at prior to their ownership. My personal feelings (so please don't take this as a guideline) are that I'm generally: 100% comfortable with 0-3 years 75% comfortable with 3-5 years 25% comfortable with 5-7 years Anything older than about 5 years should receive a lot more scrutiny in ensuring it looks, smells and tastes o.k before ingesting large amounts.

Kiwi Dude Yeah I gotta agree. I think the issue with that MRE is that generally pork sausage with gravy, served in the southern US is usually with like, a fluffy biscuit or two, cracked open and a small ladleful of gravy over the top. So it's basically a quickbread that's hot and warm, and I don't think MRE's really have an option for that? There's the whole wheat snack bread but the pork sausage with gravy still can't be really poured over the top of them, and also, that's way too much for a single serving in the retort package.

Kiwi Dude just lean it on a rock or something :). You can fold the top over but it will still cook it with the top open. Pretty much the more water the frh soaks up the hotter it gets so give it a lil shake to really get it wet.

***** It's always a struggle heating two items in the U.S. FRH's. I got the same one, same year too only problem is its 2016 and its been 4 years and they have a max shelf life of 5 at 50°F and I doubt that they where kept at 50°F the whole time. Its probably still good but wont taste as fresh.

nobody ever heats the jalapeno cheese spread. why?
@KiwiDudeMRE9 жыл бұрын
Jozef T I'm not sure. Most of the time I just forget to heat it. It tastes just as good to me at room temp.

I tried SoPakCo, Sure-Pak's civilian MRE version of this entree: Mexican Style Chicken Stew. I loved it, but they really skimp you on the civilian MREs. No side dish, and the accessories pack is pretty mediocre. Otherwise, it was a great intro to MREs. Next up, I'm trying the Pork Sausage with Gravy which is an actual military MRE this time.

Daniel Riley Meal Kit Supply and XMRE make rations that are almost identical to the genuine article. Sure-Pak and Ready Meal sit a tier below in terms of price and quantity (I do prefer Sure-Pak in this bracket though). As for the Pork Sausage with Gravy, have you purchased it yet?
@DCRiley10 жыл бұрын
Kiwi Dude XMRE is probably going to be the next civilian MRE I sample. It looked like they had some quality product to offer. I may try Meal Kit Supply in the near future. Yes, just got in the Pork Sausage with Gravy yesterday. Its date is stamped 1178, so still relatively fresh. Probably going to try it out in the next day or so. Eventually, I might even make a video as I enjoy trying out various food oddments. Great videos, btw.

Daniel Riley Thanks. I'll be really interested to hear what you think of the Pork Sausage with Gravy. Let me know how you get on.

As a person who lives in Kansas I would like to inform you that it's not at all like The Wizard of Oz. Saying Kansas is like The Wizard of Oz is like saying England is like it is in Harry Potter and we all know that isn't true.
@KiwiDudeMRE10 жыл бұрын
Hi Lily, never fear, I know Kansas isn't like the 1930's Wizard of Oz portrayal. Just a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor. Didn't mean to offend anyone from Kansas! :-)

Still amazes me why they put American chocolates like M&M's in MRE's. They melt easily even if still packaged in extreme heat; Afghanistan, Iraq or even my own native State Arizona, USA. Skittles might be a better choice. The wizard of OZ is a cool reference.
@KiwiDudeMRE10 жыл бұрын
mfkamin78 The M&M's can be a little hit and miss as to how well they last in MRE's. I've seen some packs that were perfect after 10 years, and others that were cracked and pale after just 3 years. I've never seen Skittles show any signs of age.... yet.
@vikasjsheth10 жыл бұрын
But Kiwi dude, the MRE that you've had, haven't come from Afghanistan or Iraq! So you wouldn't really know what would the very same MRE taste and feel in the hot scorching desert! I think Mfkamim78 seems to be right as skittles are too dense to become a watery mess!
