Thank you for demonstrating the five different ways of sewing hems for knit fabrics. In the past, I’ve stayed away of knits. Now, I can practice using these methods. 🤗

I tried the fusible thread and the hem came down in the first wash. I was 😢. Then I realized that the thread I was using was over 30 years old. Bought some Gutterman from Wawak. Then next hem worked like a charm. The zipper and thread prices at Wawak are amazing. You save way more then the shipping cost. Thanks for all the tips.

I enjoyed your video and learned some good tips! I have a hemming job to do on a pair of pants that look to be done on a knitting machine with fine cotton/poly yarn. The pants have a flared bottom, so the hem may have a slight curve. The fabric has a variable rib pattern, so it both very stretchy and quite heavy. The original finish at the pant hem line is a few rows of 1x1 ribbing so there is no added bulk of a turn-up hem. My thoughts on how to tackle this seem to come down to using an iron on knit interfacing strip along the proposed new hem line on the wrong side to add some stability. Cut off the excess, then use a zig-zag overcast edging stitch around in matching thread by machine. Does this sound like a good way to go about it? Any suggestions you may offer are appreciated. (And while I do knit, trying to pick up the very fine stitches at the new hem line to knit a finished edge is not a consideration. ) ps the pants are black so I think that may also work in my favour!

Sorry, second question is that I used Wonder tape and when I did a trial run, yes, the fabric was still a bit stretchy but when I did a sleeve end in the round, there was no stretch at all, not sure why. Thank you.

Hi. What make is a serger which threads automatically. Even after i have had my serger for 2 years i still struggle to get it just right. I live in South Africa so i have not known that we have them here. I usually only sew stretch fabrics which are so forgiving. Thanks

Also, thank you so much for showing how to do the hems without a serger! And the tips about ironing are helpful too. I’ve been using my interrupted or multi step zig zag stitch for the hems of my kids tank top shirts and shorts as opposed to the smaller zig zag as I was getting a lot of bunching of threads on the bobbin side of the fabric and the fabric getting stuck down in the feed dogs. I think I’ve got a tension problem, but despite all my adjustments, it still intermittently bunches threads and sucks the fabric into the feed dogs. Anyway, the multi step zig zag seems to not have as much off these problems and does well for thee hems, almost decorative. Could you use the fusible thread as the thread on the top of a regular sewing machine and then iron it the same way?
@dorothysdaughtersews
@dorothysdaughtersews 4 жыл бұрын
You know, I haven’t tried doing the fusible thread on a sewing machine, but it might work. It actually might work better wound into a bobbin.
@merindymorgenson3184
@merindymorgenson3184 4 жыл бұрын
Dorothy’s Daughter I have so many issues with my bobbin threads, I’d be afraid to try it. It will so for a while normally, and then I’ll get a big tangle of bobbin thread on the bottom, while the top looks fine. It will go on sewing normally for a while after, then the big tangle again. I have no idea what’s causing it, as I’ve tried adjusting top tension, bobbin tension, changing needles, etc, with minimal improvement. but I’d rather not risk a more expensive fusible thread in the already finicky bobbin side of things on my machine. Of course, it’s a moot point anyway, as I’m 99% sure that’s not something I can get here anyway. Perhaps when we get back to the States and I’m back to my old machine, I could give it a try.

One thing that I have found helpful with sewing knits is a walking foot or a knit foot. They both help to not stretch the fabric while sewing.

@dorothysdaughtersews

They make thinner ones that actually slide under your presser foot and help guide the fabric so it doesn’t get pulled into the needle hole.

That depends on many things. The weight of the fabric, amount of stretch, etc. Honestly, the correct needle matters more.

I have a question about your recommendation of using a ball point needle. I thought they were mostly for jersey knits where as a stretch needle would sew either. Is this a mountain, a mole hill or misinformation :-). Thank you so much for you fantastic tutorials.
@dorothysdaughtersews
@dorothysdaughtersews 4 жыл бұрын
There may be some nit pick differences, but the main thing is to use some kind of all point needle with knits. I buy ballpoint jersey needles in bulk and use for all knits.
