I watched Martin Yan cooking shows when I was kid. Prompted me to learn how to use chopsticks, use a Chinese chef knife and visit San Francisco Chinatown frequently. I can’t get enough of his shows. Have made many of the dishes he makes. I would watch these older videos before watching the many cooking shows now!
@simmiee4 жыл бұрын
I’ve been watching Martin Yan’s early cooking shows. Contrasting him speaking and teaching the audience Cantonese, to this show where he opens the show and showcases Cantonese cuisine in Mandarin (but still interviews chefs in Japan in Cantonese), and his 2020 TV appearances back in Cantonese and going back to his roots. It shows how people and times change.

I haven't seen those in 30 years but can remember the taste exactly as if I was eating it now!
@rbeck3200tb406 жыл бұрын
What is that ?
@jumbo4billion6 жыл бұрын
rbeck3200tb40 Haw flakes are hawthorn berries dried and shaped. Hawthorn berry has lots of vitamin c, it's really good to eat when you are a little ill and also tastes nice. The fresh berries taste like plums and texture of avocado, the dried haw flakes taste like childhood memories of after school snacks...
@rbeck3200tb406 жыл бұрын
Where do hawthorn berries grow ? Ive neve r heard of that
@jumbo4billion6 жыл бұрын
rbeck3200tb40 they grow on hawthorn trees 😀 There are hundreds of different kinds of hawthorn trees in temperate climate...not in very hot or cold places.

From what I have read this is a guy who as a child sucked on a marble flavored with fermented soy so his bowl of rice would have taste. Went from that humble start to a master chef. Amazing on its own, yet Martin is also funny, kind and passionate about his art. Things all too rare...no matter how plentiful they may become.
