A young African-American musician seemed an unlikely candidate to take on the Ku Klux Klan - but Daryl Davis used honesty, respect and human understanding to break down and dissolve the bitter, time-worn barriers that he encountered. Daryl Davis is an American R&B and blues musician, author, actor and bandleader, known for his energetic style of Boogie-woogie piano. Davis has played with such musicians as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Bruce Hornsby, and Bill Clinton. His efforts to improve race relations, in which as an African-American he engaged with members of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), have been reported on by media such as CNN and the Washington Post. Davis summed up his advice as: "Establish dialogue. When two enemies are talking, they're not fighting.
Daryl received rave reviews for his stage roles in William Saroyan’s The Time Of Your Life with a famed cast of Marcia Gay Harden, Brigid Cleary, Richard Bauer, Dion Anderson, and Henry Strozier. Daviwas a key player in Elvis Mania which was extended by twmonths due to popular demand in New York City at an off-Broadway theatre. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

@Felix Jessup he is not making anything better he is deflecting from the full extent of what we really have to tackle to contain racism. He is literally protecting the real perpetrators of racism. He has done nothing to tackle real institutional systematic and structural racism. This is the most prolific and powerful form of ongoing prejudicial bias operable in the USA today.

How can you hate me when you don’t even know me? Our country will become what we sit back and watch it become or what we stand up and make it become” - Daryl Davis

@@cjschneidt9089 Demean the "blind masses" all you like but in a world where most countries are run by the vote to some extent, convincing them to see the light remains fairly important. With all due respect, I think the attitude implied by your comment misses the core point of Mr. Davis's speech. How is it this video only has a few hundred likes, even though it is 4 years old (at the time I write this). I think the answer is obvious...many have bastardized the definition and use of "respect." Nowadays, respect means, "listen to what I say and give me what I want." Instead, it should be what this man says, it is a two-way street, two must come together on even ground. The problem with that is it requires the swallowing of pride, but more, that is not devisive and does not sell the news of generate headlines. Love does not sell well in the media...hate does. Anyone still wondering why this and others like get low view counts while hate and division sells like hotcakes? Hate is lazy and easy, love and respect requires effort and hard work.

What bravery it took to take on the task of meeting with a group he knows doesn’t like his race. He went in with an open heart and wanting to understand the why behind the klan. He didn’t show aggression just respect as another human being. Deception got him the first interview. Respect got him multiple interviews afterwards and the friendship with many members of a group that just simply didn’t understand each other.
