When men offer their opinions that are not favorable, I start to offer mine…we as women actually have preferences and standards for men! For example, I don’t like men who neglect their teeth and I don’t like street clothes and skinny tiny legs, I don’t like men who use any type of language in a ladies presence, I don’t like men who have multiple baby mamas, I can go on and on! It’s not acceptable for them to just offer their opinions like they are a factor 🤷🏾‍♀️

I went natural in 2017 , while pregnant with my first born. I used to be upset as to how black men responded to women with natural hair. But I realized that we all are victims of white supremacy. Let’s be honest it takes us all time to figure out how to wear our natural hair and to feel confident in our hair. Now I’m good good. We all need to do our part in accepting ourselves before expecting other people to accept us. It’s a process. Hopefully this will be something that’s well behind us. I have a little girl, I need her to see mom in all her glory. So she can confidently walk in hers.

Hello Alison. I love what you said! Especially about your daughter, young girls need to see themselves represented in the media and at home. The fact that you want your daughter to see you in all of your glory let’s her know mommy is beautiful, she accepts herself as she is and I can too. You are absolutely correct it takes time for anyone to figure out how to care for and wear their natural hair, we all have that awkward phase we’d rather not mention lol. I agree with you on the accepting portion. I always says in my videos be thankful for what you have and you will be blessed with more. It most definitely is a process, I look at commercials and tv shows and we have definitely come along way , but then some person goes viral because they have a comment about black hair and how unattractive it is. The way our hair is styled dictates the type of attention we attract and I’m trying to unlearn feeling less conventionally attractive when my hair isn’t “neat”. I regularly affirm myself that my edges don’t have to be “laid” my pony tail doesn’t have to be “slick” and my length doesn’t have to show for me to be attractive. I agree. Everyday or every time I leave the house my edges do not need to be laid, my point tail will probably never be slick if I wore one one. I just found you on KZbin and just watched this video. Any man that can not embrace the African American textured hair I have on my head whether curly w/ shrinkage, curly and stretched, braided , or straightened can keep walking by me. That is SO ignorant to expect a woman to not rock her hair in the natural way it grows out of her head if she chooses. The self hate and narrow mindedness some folks carry is astounding. The beauty of natural hair is its versatility - it can be straight, wavy, curly, coily, or kinky - ALL without chemicals. We can wear fro’s, twists, braids, spirals, locs, bone straight with the ends bumped (or not), wraps …. many options & ALL the options should be embraced. The other races don’t have those options without chemically altering their hair. We do not have to touch chemicals and we’re very blessed with many options.

Unpopular opinion but I stopped wearing certain hairstyles because I was seeing too many black men in the media/social media, wearing those same styles or styles that I used to wear in elementary/middle school. Grown men... Some black women maybe don’t feel entitled to their own brand of beauty/feminity because everybody takes a bite out of it…including black men. I’ve seen ball players with pig tails…It’s very off putting and I think a lot of black women subconsciously think so too. I wouldn’t want to be compared to the men of my group in that way, which is why I prefer my hair long when natural and I think it has something to do with all the wigs/sew ins (Although I never wore those) as well. When my hair was shorter, I was a “straight natural”. Another unpopular opinion; I don’t blame other races of men pushing their women’s beauty to the forefront in media, because that’s what any self preserving/self loving man would do.

Hello Nina. I don’t think you opinion is unpopular at all. Now that I agree with I do not want to see a grown man wearing pigtails, I will say though I do like dreads and man buns lol. Being natural is definitely a journey and every has an awkward phase they’d rather not talk about. Centuries if you want to go back. 2) Because the narrative is that black women are so outwardly (keyword: outwardly. It perfectly fine and normal to be loyal to your people) race loyal when it comes to romantic relationships, they probably don’t think they have to try or push our beauty standards. I’m convinced many think of black women as low hanging fruit. Although locks and manbuns can be attractive, I’m more concerned about the mindset of those men which tends to be a little feminine/absorbed with their looks.

First of all your hair is beautiful and I appreciate you for taking the time to make this video. I am 25 yrs old and I have been growing my natural hair for 5 years. I must say I don’t get a lot of compliments from bm when it comes to my natural hair. When my hair is straighten I get not only compliments but approached by them and it’s really uncomfortable. I don’t care about up their up bringing or what they’re accustomed to, it’s just plain ignorance and self hate which is their choice. Black people are perfectly aware our natural texture is textured whether they grew up to relaxed hair or not. Black men like that are comfortable in their anti blackness especially when they see black women embracing their hair. It’s not sad at this point it’s just disgusting. I have never been the type to beg bm to love and appreciate our natural beauty but I’m surrounded by BW who do. Natural hair criticism/discrimination is not the only issue with bm the list goes on. For the past few years I just focus on the betterment of black women and our issues because no one is going to care more about our issues than us. ♥️ ps. The straight hair thing I know exactly what you mean, that same man more than likely would not look my way up if I were curly when he saw me. This is the exact reason I ended the date I spoke about. Had we actually gotten into a relationship I would’ve spend the entire relationship trying to please him. My mom is now going to get sister locks after relaxing for many years and having hair breakage. I’m happy for her. Recently though she admitted that since she was a young woman, she always liked her hair shorter (not too short but think a bob or something). She went to boarding school in Kenya so they just cut the girl’s hair off most of the time. Which I personally disagree with although I can understand. She told me that she only relaxed her hair because my dad wanted it longer. But the thing is with the stresses of life, working in the hospital and becoming a night shift RN, she doesn’t have time to care much for her hair, and relaxing makes it worse. I feel like a lot of blk women felt pressured by the men in their lives more than even just whyte society, because the men CHOSE to uphold those “preferences” and most of the time now they will bash blk women for wearing weave or hair extensions for braiding but will never compliment you or uplift you for natural hair lol. I also feel like In Africa, taking care of you natural hair is not as emphasized and only became more popular in recent times. I live and was born in the US, and notice the dynamics in the black community here when it comes to women and natural hair. The men have a LOT to do with it as well as colorism. Women will complete for these men, and put down other women. My mother is lighter skinned, but still, no matter if they are interested in you or not, the nature of these kinds of men don’t change. Some mentalities stay the same.

They are struggling with self-hate, hence why they project their anti-black sentiments onto the women who look like their mothers. It is wild. Black women are simply waking up more collectively than men. We’re accepting ourselves as we are, abandoning societal standards, even the cultural ones. I’ve been natural for a little over 20 years and it never dawned on me that men maybe shunning me because of my natural hair. I’m also a no nonsense kind of chic so that maybe off-putting coupled with my “rebel fro” 🤣🤣🤣. I am glad to see a resurgence in our people wearing their natural hair. I make it my mission to make a beeline to anyone I see wearing their hair out in it’s natural glory and if I do happen to compliment a wig then the texture must look like something that would grow out of that person’s head. I also pass along hair tips to any random stranger, give them video links and tell them about hair tools like the Kazmaleje “paddle comb” and the PuffCuff family of puff makers that don’t rip out your hair nor gives you a headache. Each one teach one….or ten! Right? 🤪 Thanks for this video!

I stopped wearing wigs a year ago. I’ve been natural for 13 years(as in no relaxer) but I have worn extensions as I went through HS, college & now my 20s. Around 2020 I really got sick of “getting my hair done” especially living in the south at the time and I LOVE the beach so constantly having to wash my wig, secure the wig while trying to go swim was ridiculous to me & It would routinely get up to 100 degrees and having your wig slide no matter how strong the adhesive was annoying. When I almost lost my wig while jet skiing was the final straw for me. during lockdown I went all in with figuring out wash-n-gos after almost chopping everything off and from there I really started to develop a disdain for wigs. I started to wear more textured hair extensions which was lovely but the maintenance of having to manage my leave out was still annoying. Then 2022 hit and I was 100% wearing my natural curls or braids and I’ve loved it ever since! I have drastically noticed the lack of attention I get from black men(like they literally won’t even make eye contact)-but compared to non-black men I get flirtatious looks and sometimes compliments. I’ve come to the conclusion that BM as a COLLECTIVE do not enjoy black women yet they covet SOME of the features we have, just on non-black women. It’s a losing game and I feel like black women need to learn how to become more comfy in our NATURAL beauty(hair, features, shape, etc) b/c the goalpost will constantly be moving. It’s high time we make society accept a natural black women instead of trying to force us into what THEY see as acceptable.

I like this subject well my husband is from st Kitts Nevis and I been to his Island and it is All black our culture when I went there I was amazed at our beauty there their hair was natural and long & that when I noticed our hair can grow very so I told God about it that I wanted my hair to grow then one day you tube pop on my screen about growing long hair but at that time I was relax then when my daughter's got on me on growing natural and I did now my husband said to me he Loves it due to where he's from that's All the women's hair is natural and he was wondering why I relaxing my hair when we as whole culture has very unique hair my husband ❤️ it he says that our black American men don't embrace our black women which it is true I ❤️ your content ❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍

I agree, in that a lot of women would not go through that entire process of buying expensive wigs, installments and all the other things if they knew that our men would love us in our natural state. In my “experience” men stop in their tracks when they see my natural hair, I usually keep it under a silk head piece. Young, old, black , white…they love my hair. Also, some of the issues I had with those guy’s statements was the use of the word “nappy.” That was definitely cringy and they were definitely using it in a derogatory way. They act like the hair that grows out of their scalp is not the same 🙄

There are a lot of ignorant black men out there. Transitioning to natural was difficult for me because everyone was used to the silky straight and long hair that I had for years. So, transitioning from a corporate work perspective was difficult, because it was a drastic change. However, I received a lot of compliments mainly due to the fact that my hair was curly like ringlets, and people were constantly asking how I styled my hair and I would have to tell them that it grows this way. LOL NOW......I had the most issues from my fellow black male co-workers who would tell me that they didn't like my hair short and didn't like the natural look, which was very surprising and immediately dismissed. I was irritated by them most of all and just found the ignorance disappointing and surprising, and put them in check. Guess what? One of the guys had the nerve to ask me about hair products because...his wife decided to go natural!! LOLLL Hilarious.

I love this topic and I’d like to give an example of some thing that was said to me by a black male about my natural hair journey. A friend invited me on a trip with her and her male friend and I decided to go. I was on a natural hair journey so I had my hair in twist, but it was under a wig to keep my hair protected. At the time it was really hot outside and I didn’t want my hair to dry out so I moisturize my hair and I put a wig on. At night of course, I had to take the wig off . when I came out with my natural hair, the black male he said to me “you should wear your natural hair.” I kinda took offense to him telling me how to wear my hair…when I never asked him for his opinion. It also offended me because I felt like I was put on display about decisions that I made for my hair.

I really appreciate it when people make ignorant remarks. It saves so much time regarding me wasting my time talking or listening to that person further. I am not my hair, so I don't need to know if anyone else likes how I look, what I'm wearing or how my hair looks. Loved this talk & I’m thrilled that I’m seeing more & more women of color rocking their natural hair on television. As long as Beyoncé, Naomi Campbell, Mary J Bligh, Halle Berry, etc continue to wear straight hair (wigs, weaves), it will continue to be the standard of beauty for most black men. I personally went back to natural 2 years ago and love it so much and get so many compliments from people including men. My husband who never saw my natural hair loves it as well and can hardly stop touching it. You look beautiful with curly and straight hair. Loved the content & delivery! I have an acquaintance who ignorantly refers 2 my hair as "Good". I correct him, but he loves dwelling in arrogant ignorance. Once, when I hadn't defined my locks, but instead, had a more frizzy, top puff, this same man said, "Oh, your hair is nappy today!" I just ignored the fool. Most men I come in contact with either have a complement or no comment at all. I mostly wear my natural hair in a protective updo. I have 4a/b hair and I call it curly/kinky. I do realize that we, as a people have a long way 2 go in appreciating beautiful 4c hair. Some may prefer my hair ONLY because of its looser curl pattern, which is sad! Hello STEPHANIE BOWSER ! The "good" hair comments and conversations will never go away or get old, they will continue to happen until we as a community embrace all of out textures, not just the "looser" curl patterns. The nerve of your co-worker, why not just say nothing I was once told I would've been adopted because of my hair, I would've been snatched up at the orphanage real quick, it was an older woman so I just nodded and said yes ma am. We are supposed to respect our elders but they pass down their views and experiences onto the younger generation and it keeps the cycle going.

In general, people need to stop being so concerned with what other people are doing with what is on their heads. Period. Second point, yes I do think there needs to be more representation of the natural state of Black women’s hair. Yes I do think it’s important for Black women to take the time to learn about their hair. Yes it’s important for Black women to become comfortable wearing their natural hair, BUT I do also think it’s ok if they want to wear wigs,weaves, clip ins, extensions etc. as long as it doesn’t come from a place of self hate. 1. It’s perfectly possible to have and maintain healthy hair while wearing those styles. 2. I equate to fashion. Sometimes you just want to try on a different look or wear a different look. Let’s not look down on how Black women choose to wear their hair whether that’s wigs, natural, relaxed, weaves, whatever it may be.

Wow that was very informative I enjoyed the talk so many things were going through my mind because I’ve been hearing a lot about black man by the thousands that no longer date black women and I recently heard of black men dating white women and getting killed in the process so this is even more of an emotional topic for me and as black women also also feel we have to take a certain amount of accountability because some women this is just my opinion but some women took this natural hair journey to a very weird mental place where there was no way they consider their hair to be done it looked awful and they said because it was natural everyone had to except that as a beauty aesthetic and it simply wasn’t true that was ramp it stop now but it was ramp it but also is painful for your men in general not to love the way you look it’s really bad when you don’t love the white nose and full lips that’s crazy and I wouldn’t want someone like that in my life at all I mostly worry about the young girls I want them to love and appreciate themselves because they’re so beautiful and many times they don’t know it and it’s sad I’m going to read all the comments because this topic is a ongoing discussion my hair is natural but it’s usually very long. And I also wear Wig Daily. Women we are the ones that raise these boys and a lot of those thoughts we put in their heads because we were raised to hate ourselves so going forward in the future let’s raise our sons to appreciate themselves and they own on women and our daughters to love their hair however they decide to do it and to love themselves and their culture. The most important thing is that we have good people that love and respect one another women that support their men and vice versa let’s have that first a good heart will put everything into its proper perspective

Something I’ve found interesting is that pretty much the only people I’ve ever had negative comments from about my hair have been other Dominican people and just people from the black diaspora. Like other race people might say something that’s ignorant because they actually don’t know but mean things to actually damage my self esteem have mainly come from people who look like me which is sad. I dated black men who did not have any issues with my natural hair and dated both men and women of other races and they mainly just had curiosity about it because as u said there is not good media representation of our natural hair. My boyfriend currently is white and he loves my hair no matter how I style it and has always accepted it as a normal thing that makes sense just how I don’t expect him to suddenly not be a ginger any more. I will say his favorite hairstyle is the fro hawk haha I think it’s important to find someone who just accepts you as you are.

I know this is a old video but blk men from Africa don’t concern themselves too much on how blk women are wearing their hair it is only blk men from America I am married to a blk man from west Africa (Gambia) he loves my microlocs not to say Gambian women don’t wear wigs because they do but African men don’t make it their business when I met my husband 9 years ago I was wearing box braids all the time he asked me to stop wearing them I was already natural I just didn’t wear my hair without extensions at the time African men love blk women with natural hair
