Jurassic Park ends with the big T.Rex vs Raptor battle but originally it was supposed to focus on characters rather than dinosaurs with John Hammond being the one to save everyone. Had this ending had been used, would Jurassic World, The Lost World, Dominion or others ever get made the same? I go over the making of and behind the scenes material for the first movie to have a conversation on it.

One of my favourite Hammond moments comes as a result of the changed ending. I love watching Hammond standing on the helipad, staring back in the direction of the Visitors Centre, you can almost hear him thinking "Next time will be very different... when we have control..." I don't believe Hammond could ever completely divorce himself from the fantasy of Jurassic Park.

Honestly, as interesting as it would have been to see Hammond complete his character arc, I think it's a lot more realistic to have him come so close to that realization, and then just barely miss it. Change is not impossible for anyone, but it is really, *really* difficult. Also, I can't really see the Hammond we saw portrayed in the movie going out and shooting a raptor like that, and even in the storyboards, it's interesting to note how even just that very basic illustration of Hammond appears significantly younger and burly than the Hammond that we got with Richard Attenborough, which may be another reason for the change in ending

@@jakdekayen I did "freaking" read. He said he'd "heard of" this alleged Muldoon ending and then I asked where he'd "heard of" it from and asked the question as to whether or not it was a legitimate thing, because you see, just because you've "heard of" something, does not make it 100% true. It's a very real possibility that this alleged Muldoon ending that he's "heard of" was not true and that the person/source that he "heard of" it from, was wrong. As I suggested, it could have been a case of a fan looking at the storyboards and seeing a middle aged looking guy with a receding hairline and a spas-12 (as can be see in the actual storyboard at 4:43) and assuming it was Muldoon, because it looks kinda like Bob Peck, when it was in fact suppose to be Hammond, but was made before Richard Attenborough was cast in the role. But of course it could have been a legitimate ending that was scraped, which is why I'm asking where he "heard of" it from, to find out if it's legit or not. So how about, instead of telling other people to "fricking read", you use that smooth little marble rattling around in your head, that you over exaggeratedly call a brain, and actually think for a bit longer then couple of seconds and not just let a bunch of shit and dribble fall out of your mouth.

For better *OR* for worse (depending on how you look at it), the franchise has become what it is today thanks to Spielberg having a say in the 1993 original film’s ending. However, I personally can’t deny that seeing Hammond take out a raptor with a shotgun would’ve been *badass (😃)!*

Big fan of the actual blockbuster ending we got. Sadly they have nuked the T-Rex since then in what seems like an always-losing battle. Admittedly though I might add- with the introduction of Camp Cretaceous it would appear the park was trying a more real-dino-centric approach to getting people interested in their park over just using side-shows like Scorpius or Indominus. I mean opening a camp for kids to enjoy all that Jurassic World had to offer is a little sketch, but also more wholesome than hybrids as a means of getting feet through the door.

Hey Klayton, hope you’re doing well. I have a very different view of John Hammond’s arc. Personally, I think Hammond did indeed abandon his dream of Jurassic Park, and here’s why. 1: Though his initial reaction to the attack was that it was a mere setback, after calling Grant and hearing their terror, he realized that it was far worse than he had deluded himself to believe. He heard his friends and more importantly his grandchildren in mortal danger, and the look on his face and his fearful yell sell that he now sees the extent of his failure. 2: I think his line about him not endorsing his park is Spielberg’s way of solidifying that Hammond has changed his views, especially given Attenborough’s grim expression and delivery. 3: I think his final look at his park is him looking upon his mistakes and taking in all of what happened. He didn’t resist Grant helping him leave, and looked like Grant had just snapped him out of being lost in thought. 4: Hammond looking into his amber cane is more just him reminiscing about his dream and what led them all to where they are now. 5: To exemplify what he thought in TLW, I’ll just use a quote from Hammond himself: “[The dinosaurs] require our absence to survive, not our help.” That bring up the obvious question: why was final wish to Simon Masrani to make Jurassic World? Even as a kid watching Jurassic World in theaters, having only seen TLW for the first time a few months prior, this confused me. Why would Hammond immediately take thirty steps back in his progression between movies? My running theory, provided that my interpretation of Hammond in the films is correct, is that Masrani misinterpreted what Hammond told him. I’d compare it to The Boss’ Dream in Metal Gear Solid 3, where she dreamed of a world where soldiers would always have a place in society, and Naked Snake takes that to mean soldiers should always be able to fight wars on their own terms, and the Boss’ dream would be further misunderstood and mangled in a horrific game of Telephone until it caused much of the conflict in the series. Maybe Hammond told Masrani something along the lines of “I want the world to see the dinosaurs for what they are,” or something more poetic, and Masrani took it to mean “I want the world to see the dinosaurs for what they are… in a theme park.” Ultimately, this is all my interpretation and headcanon, and I respect your interpretation of Hammond as well. I think it speaks to the qualities of the writing that different people can interpret the story differently, maybe even according to who they are. Perhaps my interpretation of Hammond says something about me as a person. But anyways, thanks for listening to my rambling, and for now, take it easy. :)

That would have been an interesting ending and a good way to redeem Hammond, but it would have made sequels impossible. Unless they made Hammond lose control of InGen. Which didn't they do, or kind of do in TLW anyway? I haven't seen that in a long time, and he was still in favor of making that park, so his position didn't change too much. Plus JP1 is as close to a completely perfect film as you can get.

But IF Hammond had the complete arc with him killing the raptor, acknowledging the full failure and mistakes of engineering a park with dinosaurs, and then coming to reject his creations like that, why wouldn't he have not only shut down Site B opperations on Sorna, but have ALL the remaining dinosaurs and Pteranodons on Sorna rounded up and then destroyed, so that it couldn't happen again, at least not because of him? That right there would have changed literally the entire Jurassic saga, and perhaps Biosyn would have been the next ones to figure out the dinosaur engineering technology and launching directly into a Jurassic World story for any sequels immediately following the original Jurassic Park?

I think one of the most fascinating parts of doing the Audio Drama I did with Jurassic Time based on Rick Carter's adaptation of the script was learning and delving into these changes. Seeing how much Hammond changed. Seeing how far he'd come and how much further he still had to go. Even the discussion of Should he die? Should he live? Rick's discussion too about the over commercialization still sticks with me and I'm sure with Derrick because it really does highlight that change. Working at a theme park, there are so many pieces of Jurassic World that feel eerily familiar--and of course some details that are just wrong heh. But it is... fascinating learning about how the films were made. I don't think enough time or attention is really given to learning about those things and truly understanding it. It's like Malcolm's line about "thin-telligence" or even the "standing on the shoulders of giants" line. There's a lot more there than people give the production credit for. Not just dinosaurs, not just CG, not just spectacle but truth.

@@alexandrumircea well JW got some things wrong but its mostly from a contingency perspective. Where are the elevators? Wheel chair ramps? ECV / Stroller access? Throughput on the gyro-sphere is abysmal and if someone has an accident (vomit or other) then you’re rolling around in it. They were power-washing mainstreet with guests present (causing a slip hazard). JP has some as well, but its less and more understandable from the perspective that JP would have catered only to the super rich-no matter what Hammond thinks.

God bless Rick Carter. I believe that by the end of JP Hammond was extremely conflicted. The scene with Ellie really dives into this. His dream became a nightmare. Even when he can hear Alan shooting at the raptors over the phone he screams as though not to shoot them and harm his dinosaurs. But he is there at the end in the car to drive them to safety. I’m glad they kept Richard Attenborough away from the dinosaurs in the end. In term of the trajectory for the rest of the franchise, I think the only concept that changed was that the climax of each JW movie had to have a dinosaur battle. They’ve taken that concept and run it into the ground. Not to say they aren’t enjoyable but they do not hit home like the T-Rex vs raptor fight from JP because it was well paced and though out. I believe that even if Hammond had of shot the raptors to save his grandchildren, I don’t think his humility would’ve stopped him from trying to create another park. Character arcs are great but I’m not sure it was in his character to not push the boundaries and try to learn from his mistakes, spend more money, make the park safer etc because he relished in the capitalism and the power. It would be more befitting of his character to be the tycoon who did not learn from his mistakes until it ultimately was too late.

As cool of an arc ending as that would have been, I'm glad they didn't. Hammond was always the old grandpa with a childlike heart. He cared for the dinosaurs as If they were his grandkids. Not to say I think he'd choose them over Tim and Lex mind you, but he's supposed to be innocent to a fault in the movies. I think he purely wanted people to love the dinosaurs as he did. Especially when I listen to the memoirs. So a depressed Hammond makes way more sense. I do wonder though if Mizrani was stretching the truth about Hammonds dying wish, just from the ending of lost world. Which does fit his character, though you have to pay attention a bit to other characters dialog. I mean Hammond would never have a approved weapons research. I think Hammonds dying wish was for INGEN to continue to find a way to take care of his animals, not build another park. As in this might be a lesson in making sure your will is extremely clear. I dunno, I just felt like everyone who made World was basically manipulating Hammonds image to further their financial goals. Essentially taking what Ian Malcolm said " If I may... Um, I'll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you're using here, it didn't require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you're selling it, you wanna sell it." And having Mizrani do the same thing to BOTH the scientific knowledge AND the idea that started it.

With the same actor playing Hammond (The alternate ending seems to have planned for a much younger version of Hammond), I can see some differences happening, but not a lot. Hammond taking out a Raptor does not mean he wouldn't love dinosaurs anymore, he was simply protecting his grandkids and the others. A dog-lover killing a rabid dog wouldn't mean that they wouldn't still love dogs, just that they were protecting others from a dangerous animal. I definitely could see him still sending people to Site-B to prevent another park from happening. I see nothing of the alternate ending changing that. All Hammond did was take out a Raptor that wasn't even focused on him. The only change would be Hammond being a lot younger XD.

Based on the books, the whole reason the park would never work was because the animals were breeding and escaping. A major part of the book plot that was never really part of the book. Basically, the movie Park fell due to corporate espionage. Where as the book Park never worked to begin with because the creatures were both breeding and getting off the island prior to the espionage. Basically the espionage magnified the short comings already part of the system.

With that alternate ending had happened I think there would have been different versions of the sequels or quite frankly I think we would got a more different lost World movie and personally I think there wouldn't been a jp3 or the World trilogy.

@Joshua 1992 the t-rex saw the raptors attacking Alan and the others as we know in the Jurassic universe the rex's vision is based on movement so when the raptors were attacking the rex decided to engage and attack and kill them since they were moving around.

Richard Attenborough did complain about not getting his death scene. Had John Hammond gotten a death scene in the original movie the second Jurassic Park movie could still have happened by replacing John Hammond by perhaps his grandchildren competing with Peter Ludlow for the course to be set with these animals. John Hammond could even have been killed by the T-rex at the end after it finished off the last of the raptors killing the idea the apex predator was "saving humans" in that final battle.

Very thought-provoking quote by Rick Carter about theme parks being shallow, it helps me realize where a lot of my dislike for Jurassic World comes from. On the other hand, abandoned circuses / theme parks etc are fascinating, which is why I enjoyed the first three seasons of Camp Cretaceous so much.

i feel that the seemingly fine nature of the ending of the newer trilogy is mainly cuz of the lack of focus on that kind of stuff cuz most movie goers would not be interested in that kind of stuff and would get bored, like i feel a lot of the issues in that universe are off screen and they just did not focus as much as they probably could have even while sticking to an entertaining story/film

The idea of Hammond shooting a raptor fits with his character, _if_ you see the idea of him imprinting on the hatchlings as a demonstration of control rather than caring. He’s so egotistical, he believes the animals only exist because of him, that he should be & indeed is the only one with control over them, and ultimately, as he has control over their lives, he should also have control of their deaths. It would have been a far more mature, thought provoking ending, but not nearly as cool & cinematic as what we got.

I wonder if there would be some sort of middle ground ending, where Grant & Hammond kill a raptor or two and the Rex takes out another. Maybe we get the rex scene after Hammond kills a dilophosaur near the helicopter.

The ending we got with the T. rex saving the day will always be awesome. Although I'll admit that the initial ending with Hammond killing that last raptor would've been an interesting way to wrap up his character arc, letting go of his dream to save the people he cares for. And even then, I never thought how that would affect the sequels until now. Maybe "The Lost World" would be closer to its book counterpart by having that story's characters run the plot. Chances are Universal would still probably green light more sequels depending on how successful they were, and some of them may end up being similar to the ones we have now.

With the state of the Jurassic park franchise right now. Robot dogs, Giant locusts, Owen grady using the force to stop the dinosaurs, a cloned girl causing the countless deaths of people & animals for letting the dinosaurs loose. Yeah maybe if we got that ending, we'd have a 1 sequel movie that is based off The lost world book with that DX prion ending that causes the 2nd extinction of the dinosaurs. It would have been a really interesting franchise thats until Hollywood reboots it and we get pet dinosaurs instead of wild animals

[ book spoiler ] kind of bothering how Hammond is the jolly, kind of just a bit deluted old man with a dream that many dinosaur fans could instantly get behind of, and making a sort of redemption towards the end - the book version of hammond was an old man, with so much ambition for money and success in the genetic field, mixed with denial that could travel a mile after hitting the breaks. it was really scary how voluntarily blinded book hammond is and i was so pleased to find him dying. movie Hammond having this alternative ending does give more completion to his arc and it would have even suited him well. nice video, it is mindboggling how i hadnt found this channel before 😅 my way past-self ripping my first barbie to pieces and feeding her to the hollow t-rex i initially had wouldve shaken her head. nice to get pleasant surprises still, though 🥰

I do like the ending but I also really wish we could have gotten a properly closed character arc for Hammond. I don't think it's brought enough how when the raptors break into the control center and Grant shoots at them he screams "DON'T!" into the phone. In my opinion this shows that in a brief moment of panic, he valued the safety of the raptors over his own grandchildren. It feels like *something* happens between that moment and when he picks them up. Ever since I was a little kid watching the movie that moment has ALWAYS stood out to me. Hammond's arc has always been so clunky to me, all the way into the end of Lost World.

They could have still included the scene albeit have them escape and run into one raptor that happened to catch their scent, then boom, Hammond shows up and shoots it. It definitely could have been included in that way or another.

Lol in the books Hammond doesn’t give a FUCK about his grandkids. He runs from a T-Rex roar and falls in a ditch like Deter from The Lost World, and he also dies by the compsognathus just like Deter. But when he falls he realizes that his grandchildren did the roar on the loudspeaker intercom and he cursed them and explained how much he didn’t like them. He kinda hates his grandkids.

Here’s my rebuttal. Even if this ending took place, Ingen would still be desperate to make money after all the lawsuits over fatalities. IMO the sequels would still play out similar with Hammond losing control and Ludlow trying to cash in.

I don't think any of the future Jurassic Park films would've had the same production or story development if the alternate JP ending with Hammond shooting the raptor was left in the film. I still prefer the ending we got with the T. rex killing the raptors since it is so iconic and memorable. Also, I agree that it is interesting to look into the history of the movies and how they were put together during production, especially as a Jurassic Park fan. In fact, I would say that, alongside The Lion King, Jurassic Park is the movie that I've taken the most time to look into its production history.

He didn't really predict the progress of Jurassic Park, it turning into a Disneyland type park, he simply stated an inevitability. Jurassic Park as it was would never be able to continue being successful by only having dinosaurs to see, especially this day and age with such a sort attention span by most people. Hammond even talks about rides and such coming online in the following months after opening, while they are all having lunch in the original movie. Then in Jurassic World, Claire mentions during the sponsor proposal that guests are not interested in traditional dinosaurs anymore, they want bigger and meaner, this wasn't just a sales pitch, she was speaking the truth. Then there is the bottom line. Corporations will always look for ways to lower costs, make more money, etc. So, corportizing the park to other companies as sponsors/donors, this was always going to happen. Perfect example IRL today is Elon Musk. He swore that Tesla would never run traditional advertisements, but due to lower numbers, this is changing, it just has to be done in order to continue and grow. It would be nice to see Jurassic Park as more of a zoo than a theme park, but there is a reason theme parks are more profitable than zoos...

In the book "A Visual History Of Jurassic Park", they talk about 2 other endings that got scrapped early in production. Ending 1. Hammond refuses that the park is done and is left on the island with his creations. Ending 2. Hammond misses the helicopter and gets trampled by a stampede of Brachiosaurs with the movie coming full circle with a giant mosquito landing on the trampled dead body of Hammonds body in the mud and drinking his blood.
