Hey guys! In this video I talk about The Greatest Part of The Lost World Novel! Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park had a ton of cool stuff with the Tyrannosaur Family in The Lost World Novel and I think its something that would be really cool to see adapted from TLW in some way shape or form in the future. How Dodgson stole Tyrannosaur Eggs is really unsettling and while it didn't make its way into Jurassic Park 2, it still did introduced the readers to how nasty Dodgson can really be! :D

I always thought that the Lost World Novel was vastly superior to the film adaptation. Having Dodgson as the main antagonist connected it better to the first novel/film (rather than the film sequel universe that just leaves us to wonder what Lewis Dodgson ended up doing after his failed attempt at getting the embryos).

Years after the events of the Lost World, his tenacious and morally corrupt desire for power has served him well. He has risen up through the corporate ranks and is now the CEO of Biosyn (according to the fan novel I wrote, so I don't think it's canon !)

I thought that immediately after I read it, but now in retrospect I think they both have their strengths and weaknesses. There are things in the novel where I think, "I wish we got that in the film," but the film is the right length already and I loved certain other stuff like Roland Tembo and the San Diego incident. Fans of movies often fail to think like a filmmaker - they go, "why couldn't there be this this and this," and it's like, because that would make the film bloated as hell and screw up the pacing.

"Peter, if you want me to run your little camping trip, there are two conditions: firstly, I'm in charge, and when I'm not around, Dieter is. All you need to do is sign the checks, tell us we're doing a good job, and open your case of Scotch when we have a good day. Second condition: my fee? You can keep it. All I want in exchange for my services is the right to hunt one of the tyrannosaurs. A male, a buck only. How and why are my business. Now if you don't like either of those two conditions, you're on your own. So go ahead, set up base camp right here, or in a swamp, or in the middle of a Rex nest for all I care. But I've been on too many safaris with rich dentists to listen to any more suicidal ideas, OK?" -Roland Tembo

Now when it comes to my favorite part of The lost World Novel it has to be where Thorne and Levine are perusing the raptors through the jungle, then when they have Arby back are racing away from them. The exact lines are : " In the back of the car, the raptor scrambled up, released the tarp, and clamped its jaws on the cage, and began to pull it out of the back of the Jeep. Thorne lunged, grabbing the end of the cage nearest to him. The cage twisted, rolling Thorne onto his back. He found himself in a tug of war with the raptor- and the raptor was winning. Thorne locked his legs around the front passenger seat, trying to hold on. The raptor snarled; Thorne sensed the sheer fury of the animal, enraged that it might lose its prize. "Here!" Levine shouted, holding a gun out to Thorne. Thorne was on his back, gripping the cage in both hands. He couldn't take the gun. Levine looked back, and saw the situation. He looked in the rearview mirror. Behind them, he saw the rest of the pack still in pursuit, snarling and growling. He could not slow down. Thorne could not let go of the cage. Still driving fast, Levine swung around the passenger seat, and aimed the rifle backward. He tried to maneuver the gun, knowing what would happen if he accidentally shot Thorne, or Arby. "Watch it!" Thorne was shouting. "Watch it!" Levine managed to get the safety off, and swung the barrel straight at the raptor, which was still gripping the cage bars in its jaws. The animal looked up, and in a quick movement closed its jaws over the barrel and tugged at the gun. Levine fired. The raptors eyes popped wide as the dart slammed into the back of its throat. It made a gurgling sound, then went into convulsions, toppling backward out of the Jeep - and yanking the gun from Levine's hands as it fell."

Well to be fair to Dodgson his plan wasn't that dumb, since it would've probably worked provided Baselton had gone and got the egg like he was supposed to. Since if he had then Dodgson wouldn't have gone in to do it himself, pulling the plug to the battery out. Then again I guess that's just chaos.

This is probably the most memorable part of the book indeed. It would be hard for a movie adaptation to give you the same chills as the details in the book do. The sense of danger, the tension, the massive fuck up. The movie is definitely still among the great ones, but this time the book is better.

I honestly would love to see an adaptation of the part where they find out the Rex can smell them. Can you imagine... " DON'T MOVE! HE CAN'T SEE US IF WE DON'T MOVE! IT'S JUST A STUPID SCAVENGER!" The Rex sniffs at the nearest man and, in one motion, tosses the man in the air with his nose and catches the man in his jaws. The man screams in pain. The Rex cocks his head and swallows the man whole. The men flee as the Rex roars, all except one. The tubby, balding paleontologist remains still. Maybe out of fear, maybe sticking by his theory. Either way, the Rex picks the portly old man and swallows. "So much for being a scavenger." A hunter remarks.

It'd be a bit silly to throw in a backhanded fuck-you to the scavenger theory, since it's stated that Alan Grant was working on that same theory at the time of the Lost World novel. Crichton wasn't half as scornful of the idea as Jurassic Park's adoring fanbase is. - Lewis

Honestly, this is one of my two favorite parts of the book too (the other being the Carnotaurs, everything to do with them), and I'd really love seeing it in the film. Heck, I'd like seeing all the remaining parts of the books get adapted. (Well... maybe not Richard Levine AKA my least favorite JP character- but that's a dead horse I've beaten way too many times on the internet to get into XP) Dodgson really is such a great antagonist... it's unfortunate that he's been left out of the films since the first (admittedly for pretty good reasons, given... the unpleasantness with his actor that I shan't go into further). It really feels a lot of the time that antagonists like Ludlow and Hoskins are just trying to fill his shoes (don't get me wrong they're amazing antagonists and I wouldn't have JP without them, but most of their antagonistic traits come right from Dodgson in the TLW novel, sometimes even entire dialogue exchanges- and in Ludlow's case, his fate). Perhaps we could get him recast or something... it'd be great to get him into the Jurassic World films. Or at least BioSyn. I guess we're at least lucky that Ludlow and Hoskins have picked up the slack in his absence. Thanks again for such a great video! They always make my day!

Dodgson lied and tricked her into thinking they were a part of Malcolm's team and let her come aboard the boat Dodgson's team was traveling to Isla Sorna on....then he pushed Sarah off the edge of the boat and into the ocean. He's one cold hearted bastard in the that book.

It was definately one of my favourite and most memorable parts of the book and I thought that it was a great concept using soundwaves. This idea lends itself to some great stand-off scenes, slower paced than the usual running/hiding/acrobatics that happen with pretty much every dinosaur encounter in the films to date. To implement it in the film would have meant a completely different screenplay, right? I love the lost world (watched it just 2 days ago!), despite some really awful dialog ("She´s protecting her baby". "So am I".lol) so I think its hard for me to imagine this scene in the film without it being a very different film, for better or worse.

I just read this scene in my copy of The Lost World Yesterday! Thanks for uploading this! This is the greatest part of the novel well, one of the greatest, and Dodgson's comeuppance at the end was well-deserved!

A favorite moment of mine from Michael Crichton's *"THE LOST WORLD",* is when a group of Maiasaura arrive at the Worker Village and began to angrily tear apart Dodgson's Jeep, only to gently pick up a newly hatched baby and one egg. That moment needs to be in a future *"JURASSIC PARK"* film, maybe a prequel "if" they ever get to make one.

The Lost World novel is easily the most underrated entry in the series. Since the novel had a lot less characters than the movie did, it felt more personal. I'd love to see a fan adaptation of this novel.

"Hey Dodgson are we going to bring any heavy artillery to the Dinosaur INFESTED Island?!! Where we are stealing eggs from the greatest land predator ever to walk the Earth?!!??" Dodgson ignores him going over his own checklist... "Well I made a list anyways..." 1 Barret M82 .50 Cal 1 M60E3 3 AK-47s or SPAS-12s or any semi-auto shotguns, 3 .45 semi-autos or .357mag or higher load revolvers for sidearms 1 M-79 grenade launcher or any 40mm grenade launcher for that matter?!! Maybe a LAW rocket launcher or an RPG-7 or 2 or 3" "So what do you think?!!" "Each one of us gets our preferred sidearm and AK/shotgun. We'll carry the rest of the weapons in the vehicle. When we go out on foot, we'll be sure at least 2 of us has a different heavy weapon on us, in addition to our AK or shotgun..." Dodgson- "Fuck that!!! I'm bringing a noise maker, my loafers, 1970s khaki shorts, and 3 styrofoam coolers..." "I mean shit we're only stealing a few Fuckin Rex eggs!!!" "What the fuck do you think we're going to World War 3?!!"

Would be a bad ass scene to adapt to movie but stealing eggs seems a little on the 2 steps forward, 3 steps back kind thing as far as moving the story along.

I think you got King and Basselton mixed up. What I mean is, the book refers to Howard being tall and slender, while referring to Basselton as being shorter and stout, and bearded. It seems like your depictions of the two of them are almost completely backwards.
