Dominion committed the biggest sin in the franchise - it teased a premise that fans have wanted to see for decades, and then just…didn’t do it, for some inexplicable reason. I think fans could have forgiven a messy, imperfect execution of the dinosaurs-in-the-world story far more easily than they could forgive such an egregious bait-and-switch. I’m saying this as someone who actually liked the locust storyline more than the dinosaur storyline, too. Agreed, I really felt that the Jurrassic world trilogy was building up to a big war to do with genetic power. While Fallen Kindom was definitely not a great movie, I think had Dominion been this big Pay off of a finale to something that even the Jurrassic park trilogy has been teasing at, it's flaws wouldn't have stood out as much. They spent 5 films telling us that Humans and Dinosaurs cannot co exist sustainably. But then in Dominion, it's like nothing even happens when that warning becomes reality. Even the name of the Trilogy implied that the final film would be this terrifying warning come true. And thats why I also think the first film did so well. It would've been a good bridge from the self contained Jurrassic Park movies, all taking place in parks on remote islands and now evolving into Dinosaurs taking over our world in some way. The whole Locus thing, couldve been something for a spin off show to expand the universe or whatever. But the main plot should've had Jurrassic Genetic power, evolving into something that can no longer be contained or controlled at the centre of it, not just little sub plots to waste tome and still fit in with the fact that the trilogy is supposed to be about Dinosaurs. We could've had a really cool apocolyptic dystopian kindof movie where humans can't control the genetic power they released into the world. But instead we got a movie about a capitalist genetic company and theres just a hunch of Dinosaurs chilling??? I just feel like it had so many writers that all wanted to take the story in different ways. It was alright with Jurrassic Park 3 because that wasn't meant to be this big grand finale that had had all this build up, but Dominion should've been well thought out far in advance, in the same way Harry Potter was or how Kevin Feigie planned everything out upto endgame with a clear plan that had little change.

Gotta say in a name like Jurassic World.. a human clone plot was going nowhere... how about the impact of dinosaurs outside in the World which is in the title and a theme they talk about in the novels... instead they were replaced with locusts (you are totally right this wasn't necessary) and another Island plot basically.

Issues with Dominion: * Plot conveniences. People just happen to bump into the only other person on the planet that can help them. * Retconning Maisy. The big reveal that she is a clone is suddenly revealed to be false, and instead she is the virgin birth of a super genius. Who one of the characters conveniently met once. (If course a paleobotonist is going to know geneticists because... reasons) * The failure to get off the island. The Biosyn Valley is effectively an island. * Giant locusts that are simultaneously inflammable AND fireproof. And can't die. Because reasons. * Let's bring all the dinosaurs into this tight space. Even though much of the valley is depicted as damp and therefore unlikely to burn. * The need to have an even bigger theropod. Just to beat up the T-rex. * Only baddies die by dinosaur. * A villain who poses no threat. * Kidnapping Maisy because reasons. * Blue the pet. * No major human vs dinosaur conflict. (Where are various military forces?) * No weight or consequences. * Probably half a dozen other points I missed.

The funny thing is, I don’t like horror movies and yet, the original Jurassic Park was filmed and structured much more in the vein of a horror/thriller movie whereas the Jurassic World films are action/spectacle movies, even Fallen Kingdom which is closer to JP, but still misses the mark. That’s one of the things that made JP special, the awe, thrill and suspense all working together, not to mention the terror of the raptors and the build up until they’re revealed. They tried to do that with the Indominus, but it just didn’t work as well. The other thing I miss is the thought provoking moments from JP. The entire conversation at lunch is one of my favorite scenes in any film. We have each character getting to express themselves and share their perspective, giving us a clear view of who each of them is and why they are even there to begin with. In JW, we don’t really get that. Why does Owen, as someone who worked in the Navy, train animals? Why is he justifying his work with the raptors? If he didn’t agree with Hoskins and their possible military applications, what was motivating him? There’s also Claire. Why does she even work at JW? What does she believe about these animals? Did she care for them at one time? If so, when did she stop seeing them as animals and start seeing them as assets? Then in the subsequent films, why does she become an activist saving them? I didn’t mind JW and Fallen Kingdom has some interesting moments, but Dominion was such a disappointment.

I honestly couldn't agree more. When I watched Dominion I was honestly shocked at how bad the dialog was between the characters and the overall plot design. And of course we can't forget the terrible pacing of the movie, with the movie tossing back and forth of trying to be a spy movie, a fast and furious movie, then then trying to be a jurassic Park movie again, and repeating that cycle. Meanwhile if you compare the dialog and story points from the first movie, it's completely timeless. Whether you watched it back in 93 to now, it's completely timeless. The dialog doesn't try to fit it's current era, and the story overall holds up really well even to this day. Sure the tech and art design of everything may be from it's time, but its overall message and goal still holds up. Especially now with seeing all the crazy stuff coming from genetics now, it makes the whole plot of Jurassic Park hold up even more. I think too what the newer movies have lost is Crichton's way of story telling, set pieces and horror. The new movies aren't scary at all, meanwhile the older movies makes the dinosaurs an actual threat. Something the first movie did that none of the sequels have been able to do is capture that magical wonder, and they honestly never will, nor could they ever really. Instead what they need to do is, is bring back that horror element to the movies like the first and second ones did. Make the dinosaurs scary, give us an interesting plot we can get behind, and make it consistent with the story and setting. Once they can do that, then they can give us a good movie.

Hey Klatyon, Don't know if you'll read this or not but wanted to say first and foremost that I love your channel. I love Jurassic Park. I absolutely love all of your content. I was watching a video from "Shadows" on youtube about what could have possibly killed the men on the boat in the opening scene of JP3. I know you had touched on this before and the possibility of it being the pteranodons. The rips in the cloth of the ship, the blood streaks, etc. I don't remember if you touched on this or not but while watching that video the scene of Eric in the pteranodon's nest popped into my head. I remember seeing the bones and skulls of people in the nest. I haven't gone back to look how aged the bones looked, but if you haven't considered this before, I thought there is a strong case to be made that the men on the boat were taken to the nest. The only plot hole is that how did they get into the cage? We know from the end of Jurassic Park 2 that the pteranodons were already loose as they flew and landed on the branch of a tree to end the film. I am unsure of the ones trapped in the cage. When Amanda forgets to secure the gate in JP3 it's implied this is how they escape the cage and fly into the sunset to end JP3 but again, other pteranodons were already loose to end JP2. Anyways, possibly the men were flown to the cage and dropped through and the ones in the cage picked them off the ground and put their dead bodies into the nests. If the time between the parasailing accident and when Eric is in the nest is 8 weeks, then timewise it aligns with how big the baby pteranodons are when we see them. They would have been considerably smaller but may have picked at the corpses of the men. Anyways, I wanted to throw that theory out there if perhaps you think it's worthy of a video for your channel. Have a great day. Christ is King. (Thanks, by the way for continuing to put that positive energy out there for us) Curtis Madrid

They took “we want to be thrilled” way too far. Just full throttle go with no stopping to digest. I want wonder- the haunting pauses and mystery that dinosaurs embody. The more I see people crying out for “realism” the more I feel like they try and turn it into a circus to make it more interesting. The shipping, the needless meme implications, and just trying to make it a money maker backfired spectacularly… I want someone in the protag seat that may be WONDERED by these animals- someone with that childlike amazement by these animals. It’s the fact that these animals are treated like walking dollar signs or common zoo animals is just… it makes me as the audience feel like I should care less. Also, I don’t know if anyone remembers, but there was this featurette/behind the scenes video for Fallen Kingdom where Colin actually said “I really like the scenes in Jurassic movies that don’t have dinosaurs”. I thought it was a pretty ridiculous thing to say, especially when he is directing movies for the biggest dinosaur franchise there is (and pretty much the only one!), and it totally reflected 4 years later when Dominion was about locusts and wasted the dinosaur plot.
@seanmckelvey661810 ай бұрын
Yeah, but the thing he missed there is that those scenes are only good if the writing and characters are good enough to carry such scenes. In all honesty, the actors and writing in the World movies are (mostly) not up to that task.
@jenniferkovalick295910 ай бұрын
I agree. Dinosaur movies, that don't focus on the dinosaurs is a failure. That's why Dominion was so terrible. Collin's comment reminds me of when Tim Burton made the 2 Batman movies and said he didn't read comic books. It shows when a writer or director doesn't have the same care for the movies that the original team did.

I’ve been a huge Jurassic World Fan ever since 2015 with the first Jurassic World movie and 2018 with Fallen Kingdom and I love both Jurassic World and Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom which those are my personal favorites in the Jurassic World Franchise and Jurassic World Dominion was a huge disappointment and a disgrace to the franchise in my opinion and I respect those who love Jurassic World Dominion more than me. Hopefully, the new Jurassic Movie and the new franchise would probably do a lot better than Jurassic World Dominion because we need more dinosaur action and more dinosaur appearances. It is totally the writing. As a huge dinosaur fan who lives in a world where people aren't as big fans of dinos as I am.. nobody cares about the accuracy of dinosaurs, they want t-rex to fit their vision of t-rex (even if t-rex is actually even cooler and more awesome than what media portrays) But at the end of the dayJurassic World's entire formula has simply been- "oooh scary big dinosaur eat people- the end" that's all they do.. they hinge so much on Giganatosaurus being scary in dominion when they could've spent more time exploring how dinosaurs changed the world and how they integrated into the world's fauna.

I'll be honest, Jurassic World the first time I saw it seemed "good," nothing amazing. Then Fallen Kingdom I didn't like, and well, Dominion honestly made me furious; it was a lack of respect to the franchise. Hopefully, they won't make a James Bond Jurassic Park. They just don't seem to understand that Jurassic Park is about terror and suspense. There's no need to mix species or make human clones, etc. You don't need a thousand species to make a good movie. Hopefully, they'll make something good after the garbage that was Dominion. Great video, Klayton.

For me personally, I still very much enjoy both Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom. Dominion is honestly where I feel things *REALLY* went downhill. Fallen Kingdom may have it's issues, but there's enough enjoyability in the film that I can look past most of the flaws. But Dominion doesn't get that luxury. There are things I do like about Dominion, I won't lie, but the movie has way too many problems that are hard to ignore. Poor pacing (Especially the theatrical version), less than stellar dialogue, and a lack of stakes make the film feel too messy. Overall, I think they definitely need to ground the franchise more and bring back that flare the original films had, which it seems like they're trying to do. As a bonus talk, the first three Camp Cretaceous seasons are still really good. And then they decided robots were a good idea.

It doesn't necessarily have to have any characters from Dominion in it, it could be an entirely new cast. But I think that they have to show how the world adapts to the prehistoric animals after Dominion, especially since so many people wanted that to be the main plot of Dominion.

Watching the extended cut knowing what I am getting I found more enjoyable whilst it’s not perfect by any means. The sheer terror would be electric. Plus, I don’t think it’s fair to consider dinosaurs monsters. I enjoyed Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom for what they were, but Dominion really hit home on how problematic the trilogy is as a whole. Nonsensical writing and plot-lines, humor and one-liners straight out of the MCU, characters either having too much plot armor or not being interesting at all, no sense of wonder with the dinosaurs, and of course, blatant fan service, enough to make Disney Star Wars jealous. To be fair, none of this was all that bad in Jurassic World. I can still enjoy that one as a fun tribute to the original film (plus it did maintain some of that sense of wonder). These problems became much more apparent in Fallen Kingdom, but I was willing to look past most of them because of the different direction the film took, the heartbreaking Brachiosaurus scene, some genuinely intense, horror-esque moments with the Indoraptor, and the cliffhanger ending with the dinosaurs escaping onto the main-land. That ending made my imagination run wild, there was all sorts of story potential right there. Then Dominion happened, playing everything safe and throwing all of that potential out the window. All the build up from Fallen Kingdom meant nothing, and all of the previously established problems were made even worse and taken too far. I enjoyed parts of Dominion at first, but the more I thought about it overtime, the more I disliked it, and I have no desire to ever watch it again. It left a big stain on the previous two films, like what's the point of all that potential if it goes nowhere? I sincerely hope this next Jurassic film will go in a different direction. If it turns out to be anything like Dominion, then it might be the first Jurassic film I'll be skipping (I mean absolutely no offense to those who love Dominion).

I think a few of the issues with the trilogy is as follows 1. Fallen Kingdom should have been split into two films the first half and second half of Fallen Kingdom was so different from one another that they feel like 2 films mashed together. 2. Before dominion throw in another film that brings back the OG cast that covers what the world is like with Humans and Dinosaurs living together the main characters would be Just the OG Park cast and they could just be brought back together by Biosyn to help wrangle some of the dinosaurs for the US government. 3. Then do a film where the Jurassic World cast is trying to keep Maisie from Biosyn who are trying to kidnap her. With the film ending in Maisie getting taken from Owen and Claire. 4. Then have dominion bring all those plot threads together in a "Avengers" style movie like the studio wanted. With the plot of the last film being essentially save Maisie from Biosyn who the Jurassic Park cast has figured out is doing shady stuff with the Dinos. I may have gotten a bit ambitious there adding a few extra films but really I think the way to fix the trilogy would have been split Fallen Kingdom and have a movie that is dedicated to having Dinosaurs living with humans and the repercussions of that.

I commend you for focusing on what the filmmakers and Universal Pictures can do in order to achieve the best possible Jurassic Park films in the future. I'm on your side. You're 100 % right that screenwriting is the main issue for Jurassic Park III and the Jurassic World trilogy, and for Hollywood films in general. Screenwriting is Alpha and Omega. You said that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard brought good qualities to the Jurassic World films. That's true. The actors in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World Dominion deserved better than the screenplays they got, especially actress Isabella Sermon as Maisie Lockwood - she was a child actress. I think the next Jurassic Park film (after the one that begins production in June of this year) should be a prequel and a sequel at the same time. Dominion retconned the history of Jurassic Park cloning and Henry Wu's role in it. Now that that's happened, that's the canon of the film series. Isabella Sermon should be asked to come back and play Charlotte Lockwood as a brilliant young woman starting to work for John Hammond and InGen in the 1980s (or 1970s?), eventually cloning herself. At the same time, Sermon plays an equally brilliant Maisie Lockwood as a young woman involved in the same science as her biological 'mother', after the events of Dominion. Jeff Goldblum and BD Wong return to play their respective characters in the present-day plot. The film introduces the Disease X concept from Michael Crichton's The Lost World novel in the 1980s (or 1970s) plot (a younger actor than BD Wong can play Henry Wu here). Charlotte Lockwood isn't able to solve the Disease X mystery before she dies. InGen is able to keep Disease X classified, even after Hurricane Clarissa wipes out Site B. Subsequently, InGen and Wu, and later Masrani Global and Wu, thought DX died out. It didn't, and it re-emerges in present-day. Maisie Lockwood becomes aware of DX's resurgence, and of how it has evolved the ability to go from dinosaurs to humans. Maisie, in collaboration with Wu and Malcolm, completes the work of Charlotte in relation to DX, saving the dinosaurs, and mankind, from extinction. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are welcome to write the film.

Jurassic Park (the book) was originally a horror story about unintended consequences of playing god with genetic engineering, the arrogance of man, and corporate cost cutting costing lives. Sequels were set up by having dinosaurs escape to the mainland, leaving things open for sequels even though the island was destroyed. Basically the consequences stretched beyond the containment of the island. There was so much you could do there, but both Crichton and Spielberg yanked the steering wheel in opposite directions even by the time of the second book. The story was basically ruined from that point. The JW movies are just nostalgia cash grabs and that’s why they suck.

@seanmckelvey6618 I'd disagree with all the JW films feeling like the mcu. The very first Jurassic World was genuinely a really good film. At no point did I think, "This is like Marvel," but the other two JW films, I could see what u mean. I like Jurassic World more than JP 3 and consider Jurassic Wolrd being on par with The Lost World (with the original film at number one, obviously.)

The dinosaurs in the original (even in the two following sequels) for the most part acted like actual animals . From Jurassic World and onwards they either acted as Hollywood monsters or Hollywood animal companions.

For me if dominion skipped the locusts and malta black market. Dominion would have been a much better movie. AND FIX THE GODDAMN PACING

I don’t think they will ever be able to recreate how I feel every time I see the T Rex claw for the first time on the electric fence in the original Jurassic Park. My stomach still drops.

When you see jurassic world and especially after the indominus break out the vibe just shifts it as if we see a mega strong monster/villain just running rampant and guessing how or who would be able to stop this monster. There are several movies which portrays these super villains and the writing is so good it actually just gives off a scary vibe and keeps audiences in suspense on what happens next and the teaming up of the t rex and the velociraptor when all else fails was the best part it actually keeps audiences at the edge of their seats and its not just the way they wrote the indominus and it also goes to do with the fact how they decide to finish it off

I hated he was a made up dinosaur and evidently Godzilla levels of strong alongside being too smart to be minigunned or rocket launchered. It's unbelievable.

Using Rotten Tomatoes to prove a point really? Star Wars Last Jedi has 91... so yeah, that's not wrong at all... They also had to change some ratings they play with to confuse people who based their opinions on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes in to thinking they were good films. How about the carbon copy of story structures and complete sequences and composition for Jurassic World? That takes away a lot, but you don't see that part in the critics. Isn´t originality important? A cool video would be comparing the scenes they copy. Jurassic World is a copycat as Star Wars Force awakens.

I really love how they fleshed out the raptor-human relationship in the first movie, and it is the most realistic progression of the trilogy. They're animals, to put it blunt, but are also highly intelligent animals. They're able to communicate, coordinate, and solve problems, thus having a more complex social structure. They remind me of crows and ravens, which are known to be tremondous at problem solving, and have been witnessed in the wild to create extremely complex tools out of sticks to find food. They're also known to hold grudges against people for years but also imprint on people who interact with them in a positive way. The same can be said with the raptors in the Jurassic Park trilogy who associate humans as a threat due to how they isolated them and treated them poorly vs. the jurassic world raptors, Blue in particular, who had a very positive experience with Owen Grady and imprinted on him from an early age. She still carries all the traits of being a wild animal, but her experience with humans is very different.

I think that fell off in fallen kingdom I enjoyed it but I noticed towards the end of that film was expecting a dinosaur ruling world that was set up at the end then we get dominion which completely went 180 Jurassic World really boost the franchise again but I say that what ever they have planned for that 7th movie there gonna need a hail Mary pass for people to get back into this franchise.

“He slid into my dm’s” ironically relates to 90% of the audience watching as 90% of the audience watching would use that exact sentence too describe they’re significant others first encounter with them

I really agree with all your points. As someone who is not a writing expert, but is a die hard fan of the first 3 films and the franchise overall, I would love to see it get a better writing treatment going forward. I can deal with the CGI and some of the other shortcomings of modern Hollywood, but it's absolutely right that the screenplay can make or break a film. The biggest shortfall of the Lost World and Jurassic Park 3 was the overall plot and sequence of events. Looking back on Jurassic Park 3 in particular, I enjoyed everything about the move except the ending which seemed kind of lackluster. You needed one more encounter with the spinosaurus and the ending they had planned seemed like it would hit the mark. I'd argue the dialogue and writing of the first 3 were some of the best in the whole franchise. For the new trilogy I enjoyed it as well, at least the first 2, but they for sure fell short of what they could have been. I think the basis was there, a new functional park with guests, a giant hybrid dinosaur that is mistreated and also very violent and intelligent, and even the park attempting to control the dinosaurs like the raptors. I just don't think the execution was well done. I actually really enjoyed the black market idea in the second film and having wild dinosaurs roaming the country in the 3rd. But to string all of these plot points together into something logical and believable had to be priority 1
