@agilemind62415 жыл бұрын
@@davidhollenshead4892 National service sounds nice but it is problematic if you really think it through. (1) Do you pay young people for their national service? - if you do then where does that money come from? if you don't then your just flat out exploiting those youths. (2) How do you ensure quality of work? Young people aren't going to be trained or have expertise in whatever you are forcing them to do. I certainly wouldn't want to cross a bridge built by 18 year olds who only showed up because they were legally required to do so. (3) What happens to the people they would be replacing? Creating a national service program won't magically create more work for people to do, so this new free or discounted workforce is going to be replacing people who currently do these jobs. The military can do it because it is an entirely publicly controlled institution that doesn't actually produce any products/services that compete with private sector jobs. Plus a lot of the work they do isn't actually that important so when some fresh-faced kid screws up it's generally not that big of a deal - guards falling asleep at their posts usually won't end with 100+ children dead or injured unlike say if someone doesn't assemble the roof of a school correctly.
@dontaylor73154 жыл бұрын
@@agilemind6241 "Do you pay young people for their national service?" I assume, without looking it up, that alternative forms of national service (e.g. the Peace Corps) have included a salary because I doubt any administration or any Congress could get away with mandating service paid for out of pocket by the person performing it. "... where does that money come from?" My suggestion: out of the vast amounts now spent on expending young people as cannon fodder in regime change wars for corporate profit. "How do you ensure quality of work?" I would guess the same way it's ensured by the existing service branches. For instance the gruntworkers on the ground aren't charged with designing and overseeing the Army Corps of Engineers projects they carry out. "What happens to the people they would be replacing?" The bulk of the infrastructure work now needed (just one example: the majority of American bridges are dangerously old and in disrepair) is work nobody's being employed to do. And millions of school children need but can't afford tutors like those now available only to the privileged; giving them a leg up would be an invaluable national service.

A bit late, but here we go, a little comment to the things Sebastian Junger said relating to the Covid-19 crisis and what he talked about the services he witnessed in eastern European countries. I am from Austria, here is a little suggestion for the future, an example of how we replace and support our failing forces due to corona. we have a system that still requires 8 months of military service for all young men. However, there has been an alternative that has been on for the last 30 years, the so-called community service or civil service. Young people help in old people's homes, in the rescue service, with the fire brigade, handicapped care, general care services etc. for 8 months. A short training course, depending on the job, and it starts as an assistant. Not only can you get all the people involved in the event of a crisis like we have now. In addition, it would not harm anyone, regardless of whether poor or rich, white black, yellow or brown, that they get an insight into social life, or rather, it does not harm them when they grow up. As compensation (pocket money) you get about 300-500 dollars since you usually live at home after school. Now in the Corona crisis, our government has called the past 5 years of civil servants who have been in the care and rescue. That was 6,000 additional hands within our 9 million Citizens (approx. Same as New York). In this country, there is also a discussion of equality that young women should also be involved in this obligation. It shouldn't be too much to ask that all young people sacrifice 8 months of their lives for the general public and the state.
