@vernon padilla 1927 - Not the "original" but earliest recording. Song was traditional melody with versions in Turkish, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, Armenian. Most likely Arabic or Turkish origin but no one knows for sure.

@@giannissempros2392 No, it's from long before 1927 and was written by a Jew born in Aleppo. Original language was probably Arabic or possibly Turkish. Writer's name was Effendi Oudi Ibrahim. Greek version of 1927 was the first recording. Song was popular in Egypt in 1916 and was already known around 1900.

@@stavrosnicolaou4702 That's because there is no published sheet music or recordings of the original, so rather than making up facts, like claiming the original is Greek from 1927, I am stating what is known: It's from before 1900, and Turkish musicologists attribute it to Effendi Ibrahim. By the way, Miserlou two of my great uncles heard it played at a Jewish wedding in 1905, and the lyrics were in Ladino.

Composed way before 1927! 1927 was first recording, but was well known in many different countries, before 1900: Turkey, Syria, Egypt, North Africa, Eastern Europe, Armenia, Persia etc.

There is no "original" this song/melody is traditional and is known in Turkey, Greece, Arab countries, Armenia, and amongst Sephardic Jews, Moroccans and others. First recording was Greek.
