Years ago we taught asl to our toddlers. The one sign that they used most was "more", which they and we used frequently during meals. "Yes" and "no" were also used frequently. They weren't old enough to speak, but they could communicate with these signs.

My son is nonverbal but uses just a few signs. “More” is the one we get most of all too. Mostly at bedtime when we are reading books😂

I work at a daycare with 1 year olds and I am teaching them some signs. It is so adorable how the toddlers I work with make their own signs, and it amazes me how quickly they learn. One toddler in particular can sign "more bubbles please" he says the word bubbles but, more and please he signs

Thank you for these wonderful videos. I’m still teaching my grandnephew ASL since he was a baby. He will be 2 in less than a month and he’s doing great. He knows most of these already but i still reinforce the learning. He loves to sign animals. I bought him a DVD of ASL animal songs and I saved a bat from being hit by a car and he was signing bat. That was months ago and he still signs it when we walk by the spot I rescued it. (I didn’t touch it I scooped it into an empty snack box and brought it to a licensed rehabilitator) He was so freaking cute. I wanted to cuddle. Anyway thank you again. ✌🏻❤️🙂🙏

Thank you for doing this!!! I am homeschooling my three children and my youngest is special needs and primarily non verbal. The School wasn't teaching her sign (she is 10), so we have a lot of catching up to do. We learned some at home before homeschooling, but now we have time to learn so much more. I love your videos. they are great.

This is such a good video Meredith! I’m a CYPA (Child & Youth Program Assistant) for the Army & teaching these signs to the toddlers that don’t speak verbally just yet is really helpful! I’ve noticed a few of the kiddos in my classroom already picking up a couple signs! 😄

I just got a new job as a preschool teacher and I'd love to incorporate signs into the classroom as often as possible! I'm hoping it'll help kids who aren't speaking yet to communicate without spoken words, and so they'll have a better appreciation for multiple means of communication ❤️

Thank you...thank you...thank you! As always, easy to understand AND evenly paced with a few repetitions. NOT everyone does that, many rush and do 1 or 2 quick explanations while showing how to actually sign and then move on. Even in your non toddler or alphabet or number videos, the repetition and pacing is perfect. I wasn't born deaf I was MADE partially deaf in both ears through violence. So I've always been part of the community but now I've decided to learn ASL for other medical reasoning that I'll need later. I sex on the other day and thought about it, and I realized more than half my life has been spent WITHOUT full my hearing. I'm a soft lip reader that I don't tell people about that because then they speak louder and extend their mouths and facial gestures which is ridiculousness and inaccurate for me to understand them. I've tried several times with ASL and just couldn't get the hang of it but now I really need to do it. You're one of the few people I found on KZbin that's been able to explain things clearly. Thank you so much. 😉❤️😎 #NYGenBikerLady

My son is 3.5 and we’re having some speech concerns. He’s beginning to see a speech therapist through our school district. You can only understand about 15% of his speech. I understand and can piece things together because I’m always with him but others don’t understand at all. I’m beginning to learn sign language because it’s heartbreaking not to be able to understand him and he’s so enthusiastic. My older son is also on an IEP for speech and becomes very agitated when I can’t understand him and shuts down. I’m really hoping he wants and is interested in learning sign language. It’ll make it so much more pleasant if it’s not forced. I’m overwhelmed and hopeful at the same time. I wish I had started sooner but it’s never too late.

I’m a toddler teacher and mom of a 3 year old. I’ve been teaching my son signs since he was a baby. I have a HoH toddler in my class now and I’ve been trying to teach my whole class some signs to help communicate with her. She doesn’t know much yet, and I’m not sure what she’s been taught yet but we have been learning basic words based on the flash cards we use at circle time, as well as basic phrases like lie “diaper change,””go play,” “good job,” “thank you,” etc.

Ever since then, i've been determined to sign and sign fluently, as i love learning new languages, so having someone tell me what different hand movements means is amazing!

I'm learning to speak sign language for my niece she was born deaf, she attends the beautiful school and St Augustine Florida for the deaf and blind students were Ray Charles attended she's doing so well and I would just love to be able to speak to her. I know a little bit of words not too much I know some of the alphabet. We had a party recently and I was able to take what I learned from these videos plus what I already know and was able to speak to her though I do have a little bit of trouble with following back. They have to sign really slow cuz I can't pay attention that fast especially when they spell something I'm trying to figure out wait a minute that letter is what you're calling me what no she wouldn't do that she's a sweetheart beautiful little girl and I hope I can learn as much as I can so that I can sit down across the table from her when she becomes a full grown adult and I will be able to carry on a conversation with her so I hope that these videos will teach me to do that. And that would be a surprise because only few know how to do it and she doesn't know I'm learning or trying to learn
