I think my favorite thing about ASL or any Sign (or any language tbh) is the etymology behind it. Thanks for always including the etymological tips and the literal translations!! It makes the signs have a more emotional context and be easier to remember.

I miss signing to my best friend/sister. I met her when I was 7 years old & when I was 8 asked her to teach me to sign, I'm now 59 yrs old & hadn't seen her in 15 years cause of me moving away. It's came in handy knowing sign language cause once in awhile I meet a deaf person. I started signing in the church during service & people have notice & comment about it. We have music camp for kids ages 5-11 yrs old for 5 days before school starts & was asked if would teach them to sign the Bible Verse for that week, I didn't hesitate to say yes. I encourage anyone that wants to learn a different language sign language is the best one to learn

One critique I have is that sometimes showing the full form of the signs is neglected. Especially pumpkin. I saw the orange part of the sign but I could not make out the hand form for pumpkin. You can say it's just thumping your hand, but if we can't see your form, we will wonder to thump with what. Middle finger, index, pinky? I've been watching these videos a good while lately and theyre pretty good, but if you're making these for beginners, try to be mindful of all aspects of form. Placement, location, direction (clockwise, counterclockwise, left, right, forward, backward, up, down, slant, etc.), How many taps or movements. I just felt this would be crucial because this could lead someone to improperly sign something. Like how you say eyebrows and expression is important, I would think the other elements I mentioned are crucial as well.

I am extremely new. New to finding this channel, new to ASL, and new to everything. But I could really use any help I could get. I want to take this seriously and learn it So just wondering, could you sign your intros and the whole conversation as if the volume and subtitles are turned offI know I have no room to talk but it helps me learn if you sign everything you say. It helps me learn the nuances and read the signs better. I can show them but not read them quickly. If you you used them with all your speech it might help me learn. On the other hand I understand if that may be a bit too much for other beginners. Regardless. Thank you.
@LearnHowtoSign2 жыл бұрын
The reason I don't sign and talk the intros is the signing wouldn't be in correct ASL structure. My hope is followers not only learn the signs but the structure of ASL as well.

Hi there! Current ASL and interpreting student here. I came across your page just now and was wondering why this video does not have any captions? The whole point of this video is for learning, but it is not accessible to the Deaf or HoH. Even when the automatic KZbin captions are added to some of these, the quality is terrible.
@LearnHowtoSign3 жыл бұрын
Hi Emily! Thanks for checking out our channel and so good to see a fellow ASL and interpreting student. We actually used to do closed captioning on all of our videos, but analytics showed very few people were using them. It does take a considerable amount of time to add custom captions and at the time we decided to stop doing it to better balance our most valuable resource, TIME. However, as our channel has grown in the last several weeks we have seen an uptick in people looking for that feature. I also just wrapped up my masters degree and have more capacity so I think it’s a great idea to start adding them again. We will certainly strongly consider it. Thanks for the suggestion and best wishes to you on your journey to become an ASL interpreter!

As a Deaf person, I feel deeply hurt and frustrated seeing hearing creators profit off ASL-a language that comes from our culture and experiences-without giving back to the Deaf community. ASL is more than just signs; it’s tied to our identity, history, and values. It’s important for everyone to recognize that learning ASL should come from Deaf educators who truly understand and live the language. Please consider supporting Deaf creators who are the rightful stewards of ASL and its cultural significance.
