I owned 3 sets of speakers they sell at Best Buy and had a hard time selling them fast enough. What junk. I'd love to hear the Lascala but I seriously don't understand how they can possibly charge $8000/pair for a 40 year old design, from a company that has full capability to mass-produce and would clearly have it in their best interest to pound these things out. They look like a high school project...

I have Forte IIIs, then got into the Cornwall IV and then found a pair of 1978 La Scala at a garage sale. The La Scalas are on a whole other level. They have really shaken my opinion of what I like after living with them for some time. I'd take them over the Kef Blade or Revel Salon 2, or Dynaudio C4 all of which I've owned long term. If they just did a little better bass then would be perfection. I can only imagine the newer version sound even better.

I had a roommate in the early 80s that had a pair of La Scalas that he used for sound reinforcement for his band and had them in the living room when not at a gig. We ran it with my Crown IC-150 preamp and my Harmon Kardon Citation 16. I found that you need a large enough room for them. You need to be a certain distance from them to appreciated the sound. All of the drivers were Electrovoice which is why they are so efficient. The horn loaded bass does not produce real low bass... they need a subwoofer. These are meant to project. I don't know what drivers are in these new ones. I bought a pair of EV PI-15-3s with 15" woofers, 6.5" Vented Midrange with 16lb magnets, and ST350B bi-radial tweeters in a large vented box. Much better bass, great midrange at a closer distance and a much better tweeter with a large magnet. Got them used for $400 back then. Yes they will run with 7W.

I made a video of the original La Scala’s and it received much dislike. I do not care what anyone says, this speaker did not have bass that I would call bass. I think growing up in the 90’s/2000’s, I grow up with hip hop bass. While the bass is accurate, it is also seriously lacking! I fixed that problem with the purchase of the Klipsch RSW-15 😅 I went as far as taking the la scalas apart and was shocked to see the tiny magnet on the woofer! I plugged the my amp in directly to the woofer and swear to you it has the weakest bass, I have ever heard on any 15” woofer/subwoofer. I will state that this was my personal experience with the la scalas. They’re amazing for vocals and clarity but for most a subwoofer is needed. Lastly, you must have a taste for the “horn” for some it’s headache inducing and listening fatigue will likely fallow. I agree a tube amp with these speakers are a must or wise that super high pitch will become too much IMO! Great review, much better than the one I attempted many years back!

According to the specs this speaker has an F4 of 51 Hz, so yes it is missing the last 25 Hz fo what we can hear. Your decision to add a subwoofer was correct. I bet a set of La Scala's with a couple of SVS, REL or even open baffle subs would have made you very happy.

La Scalas do not play low at all. I mean zero bass below 50 hz. Literally zero. Everything else is spectacular. Personally I’d get la Scalas with a subwoofer, and you will be in pure bliss. I have heard the Cornwall IV’s and they’re amazing as well, and they hit very hard compared to the la Scalas and are almost as good everywhere else but the la Scalas just beat the cornwalls to me. You can’t go wrong with either and I guarantee you’ll be 100% pleased with either purchase. At 4K a pair, you’ll save a lot of money on the cornwalls and still have another 4K to spend on a nice amp than if you were to just buy the la scalas. If money and space is no object get the Scalas and nice subwoofer and you will be in bliss

Klipsch speakers can take a bit of getting used to. That said, it's important to use a truly good amp with any fully-horn-loaded speaker. That's because the high sensitivity of these speakers can reveal noise and low-level distortion in garden-variety amps that you'll never hear with average speakers. Since LaScalas, K-Horns, Belle Klipschs, etc., are upwards of 20dB more sensitive than an average bookshelf speaker, they make noise and crossover distortion 20dB louder than bookshelf speakers. So do yourself a favor and use a good amp of 3-15W per channel. More power is OK, if you're going to be 100 feet away, or if you're already deaf. Otherwise, it's unwarranted.

Buy used and upgrade the drivers. You'd have to get a sub with a la scala if you like really low bass (the heresy and la scala only goes down to 50 Hz).
@nomorokay26 жыл бұрын
@@fernarias Paul Klipsch chose his drivers carefully and designed the speakers to work with those specific drivers. They are musical instrument amplifier drivers that will work well for many decades. However, replacing them with more expensive drivers often ruins the great sound. One very effective but expensive way to improve the sound of the La Scala (original or LS2) is to do the Jubscala conversion. This converts them to 2-way bi-amped speakers that need 4 amplifier channels and an electronic crossover. The mid-ranges and tweeters are replaced by the big Jubilee pro tweeters that easily cover 480-20,000 Hz. and eliminate one crossover point. You'll still need a subwoofer. It may be expensive, but it's really worth doing. Your ears (and guests) will thank you. And yes, La Scalas do need a subwoofer. The physics of horns require them to be really huge to produce deep bass, and the La Scalas are big enough already. However, the La Scala+subwoofer combination gives you pretty much everything: great imaging, great dynamics, ultra efficiency, and realistic vocals. Enjoy!
@fernarias6 жыл бұрын
@@nomorokay2 Even Klipsch updated the drivers on the La Scala, tweeter, midrange and woofer. The box is the same design. La Scala were actually designed by Paul to be loudspeakers and you can see them everywhere in pictures from political campaigns from the 50s and 60s.
@nomorokay25 жыл бұрын
@@fernarias The La Scalas came out in 1963; and at first they were used by only one politician, so they weren't seen everywhere until the mid to late Sixties. As for the sound, it impressed some people enough to bring these black-painted plywood boxes into their living rooms. That would not have happened if they didn't sound great. The La Scala II does not use the same box as the original design. The cabinet is now 2-piece, and weighs 50 pounds more than the original version. This is mainly because they're now made of 1 inch MDF, instead of 3/4 inch plywood. This provides greater stiffness, which eliminates any resonances that might have occurred at high volume levels in the original model. The crossover is also greatly upgraded, which took quite a bit of engineering time and money. I bought a pair of early La Scalas years ago, and when I bought a pair of La Scala IIs years later, the older ones became my surround speakers. This means that I listen to both versions every day, and the La Scala IIs are definitely improved over the original design. Nobody is getting cheated by these prices. After more than fifty years in production, along with regular improvements and upgrades, of course the price has gone up. A 2019 Porsche 911 costs a lot more than a 1963 911, just like everything else in the world, and nobody is surprised. It's no different for speakers. It's pretty much that simple. The new La Scala II (2006-on) is styled similarly to the Belle Klipsch, considered by many to be one of the best-looking Klipsch speakers, so now they don't only sound great, they look great, too.

Poor bass response, and extreme listener fatigue after about 15 minutes. I tolerated them for about 5 months and then sold them.

The Belle ((which I also owned), a 1970s version, was an ill-designed speaker. The LaScala was a far better sounding speaker but in that era, the LaScala was an unfinished piece of furniture most suitable for studio and club employment. The Belle I believe was designed to be the home version of the LaScala, wider but not as deep. I also owned Khorns, several pair. Now I have a pair of Altec Capistrano from the 1950s/1960s. I had a listen to these, and it has a really poor resonance at 200hz or so... pretty embarrassing for the price of it.

Audio manufactures are pricing themselves out of business. I hope the La Scala does sound good. But really $8000, JBL reintroduced the 100 at $4000. Come on guys middle America ain’t gunna pay that.

Your logic is sound, but. It's home theater speakers systems, and 7 channel receivers everyone is buying, that is pricing premium speakers and quality 2 channel amplifiers that high. Let's be honest, music is not driving the industry like it was in the 60's,70's, and 80's. The good news is, the used market is very active for these. I find them for $1200, all the time...

I love the Scala's, i have a pair. 1980 industrial in black. Paid 1200$. But 8k for new ones. No way man! Just way overpriced. IMO I bought mynpair of Heresy in 1993 for 1150.00$ brand new. Now over 1000$ a piece. I dont think so........
