To quote Cornette, this was the biggest clusterf*** in the history of clusterf***s. And a lot of it rests on Vince for not reigning this nonsense in. It's easy to Monday morning quarterback this stuff in hindsight, but with how Bret and Shawn were at each other's throats, Vince should have called an audible and put Taker in the match to get the belt off Bret. And then Taker could have dropped it to Shawn.

If Nash and/or Hall were in WWE, there would be no need for the screwjob. The situation had develooped only because Hall and Nash were in WCW and the nwo was formed. WCW couldn't have pulled off the NWO story without the outsiders. So, it doesn't really make sense. But let's assume, instead of Hall/Nash, it would be some other high profile WWE guy/s who jumped ship and made WCW great with a storyline. When Nash is in the mix in WWE, things would be very different. He would be involved in some ways with the WWE championship. Shawn would have a buddy who is also friends with Bret, who would keep Shawn down to earth and wouldn't let things escalate between Bret and Shawn that much. Shawn wouldn't make that stupid comment, when Bret said I'll do the favors and you're safe with me in the ring. Hence, everything goes smoother.

The original question is moot and it can’t be answered because it assumes everything else would remain the same other than Nash being at the WWE. In reality, if Nash was there in Montreal, that would mean he never went over to WCW, which means there wouldn’t be an NWO, which means WCW wouldn’t have gotten the boost it got to put it over the WWF/E, which wouldn’t have put Vince in the desperate situation that made him give Brett a massive contract, let alone let get out of it to go to WCW.

Bret was devastated after that. Eric Bischoff even admitted that Bret wasn’t the same when he arrived at WCW. If it hadn’t affected him deeply, he wouldn’t have dedicated such a significant portion of his memoir to it-it wasn’t just for show. Your perspective is your perspective, but seeing Bret after that one night, it was clear he wasn’t the same person. He wasn’t the Bret Hart that owned WrestleMania 13 anymore. There was a detachment in him, something you could see in his eyes for years afterward-and maybe even a little today. No amount of "keeping up a work" could justify that much emotional energy. Bret is far too honest not to acknowledge it now, and if there was ever a time to reveal the truth, it would have been in his memoir. To dismiss his trauma as unreal feels disrespectful. I have so much respect for Bret, but it’s hard to imagine anyone staying resentful, angry, and bitter for their entire life over just one night-unless that night truly left a deep wound.

It's Obvious Kev gets WHY Brett didn't want to put over Sean, and Especially Where. And what's MOST obvious is that Vince Could have had Brett lose to anyone else AND Sean Cried and Cried Demanding it be Brett, AND Where it was, and Vince Betrayed Brett for his Boy Toy Sean ..... since he liked tapn dat ass .... Yeah, I’d totally trust the opinion of someone who wasn’t even there…and if it was a work, then Shawn, Vince, hhh and Bret deserve academy awards for their performance, including lying to friends and family

Funniest thing was Bret's wife was right about all of it. She knew they were lying and told them to their faces. Balls of steel on the broad. Sean, I love ya, but you sound like a broken record with the whole "if the promoter wants the belt back, you give it back" You've been saying it for years. He would have dropped the belt to ANYONE but Sean Gladly.

Vince thought Bret would do what Flair did 5 years earlier and appear on the other company's show with the belt. Lets not forget Madusa threw the belt in the trash on Nitro a couple of years before. Bret should do what his boss asked him to do whether you agree with it or not.

I always thought the Montreal "screw job" was a bit of a joke. Made me lose more respect for Bret than anyone else involved. He was leaving the company, and everyone was fine with that, and even was going to give him his final match in his hometown. The company said we need to keep the belt with our guy and not the guy that's leaving. It MAKES SENSE. Why would you have a guy quitting and going to a competitor keep the belt? It was just Brets ego and noncompliance that made that whole situation happen.

Bret was still under contract for a few weeks afterwards and was to relinquish the title on RAW the day after. He just didn't want to drop the title to Shawn and said he'd drop the title to anyone else (including The Brooklyn Brawler) in the lead up to the Survivor Series, which he didn't even have to wrestle at as Bret had already fulfilled his contracted dates for the year. Bret could have actually no-showed.

I mean he wasn't leaving for like another few weeks. Plus he would have dropped to belt to literally ANYONE else just not the guy who told him he would never do the same for him.

@@mr.x9566 If he no-showed that could have been the companies fear as well. It sounds like he wasn't going to relinquish the belt anyway. Plus it's not his call on who he loses to or how management moves story lines forward. Why risk your companies highest belt to be on a guy leaving the company to join your competitors company? I know Bret was screwed by Hogan not wanting to wrestle him years earlier, and thought the belt gave him more power than he actually had by refusing to wrestle people. Hogan did poison the company in that way, but you are literally there to work story lines. As talent that is leaving the company do your job, and relinquish the belt.

Nash never fell in love with Pro Wrestling...Nobody treats the business the way he did with literally ZERO passion then claiming to love it.

Zero passion ? That’s a stretch , to work a schedule like Nash had , you have to had a passion for the business . Nash has put in more to this business than a lot of guys , prob your fav wrestlers included , from the Indianapolis meeting , to getting guys gauranteed money , hell ask the X division guys , and that’s just the tip of the ice berg
