Flew on the 747's six times (PAL 4 times, Korean Air 2 times). Only other jumbos flown are the L-1011 (Delta - twice), MD-11 (PAL - once), DC-10 (Continental Airlines once), 777-200 (Singapore Airlines twice), and 777-300 ER (Singapore Airlines twice). Amazing technology, all of them.

I'm so glad I got to fly in these gorgeous planes 4 times in my life. Hands down the best plane ever to fly in my opinion. Certainly the most comfortable and spacious one I've ever flown in. Second would be the MD-11. Would have loved to try the L-1011 but sadly never got the chance. ☹️

My first L1011 flight was in 1976 when I was 16 on Air Canada. Great airplane. Got to sit in the cockpit for about 15 minutes during the flight. Those days are gone forever.

@@nilgor70 That's strange. I've always heard they were one of the more spacious planes especially with no center overhead bins which made it seem even roomier inside. But I guess sitting way and back in coach was never super spacious no matter what LOL.

Yeah, definitely! As far as I know this is quite standard in Los Angeles, probably to gain altitude before crossing the city.

This is the typical LAX departure path unless the winds are from the east. The takeoff is over the Pacific and then the planes heading east do a 180 and go.

When you're taking off of 24 left or 24 right you always head out over the Pacific over Catalina and then the mainland.

When we took a 747 from Air New Zealand from LAX to Auckland back in 2000 it did not go back over the mainland.

Everytime I see a K.L.M. 747-200. I think of that Dutch Kamikaze pilot Jacob Van Zanten who took off without permission in the fog because he couldn,t wait 10 seconds and slammed into the Pan Am 747-100 on the same runway at Tenerife, Canary Islands. March 27, 1977. 583 dead. Worst air disaster ever on the ground. R.I.P. to the 583.
