Landing at Hongkong on runway 07L on very clear day (which is rare at Hongkong). Apologies for bad audio after touchdown.

Landed here twice last year and it must be one of the most scenic approaches to an airport I have ever seen. Lantau Island just has to be seen to be believed. Good video SuredT !!

i really love the way this guys of klm can land a plane always centered on rwy and in such a soft way....they are the best pilots..

thanks for posting. it's a real privilege. keep them coming. and thanks for the st. maarten explainer. nice to hear from a captain.

At low speeds thrust reversers can blow dust and debries into the engine intake flow which can obiously wear or even damage the engine, so they are normally only used to aid initial deceleration with the wheel brakes doing the rest.

@steelersfanhawaii Knots. Commercial aviation works with knots. General Aviation in the US works mostly with miles per hour. Gliders in Europe work with Km per hour except in the UK of course ;-). So pretty confusing sometimes when I fly in one of the three aircraft types.
@realazy14 жыл бұрын
@steelersfanhawaii Those numbers are altlitude amount between runway and the aircraft. They use in references to the pilot to monitoring the plane's descending rate and decide the time to idle the throttle.
@mutts25216 жыл бұрын
you are correct. kai tak had the old 'checkerboards' that pilots would more or less fly straight at (on the side of a hill, by the way), then turn very abruptly and at a sharp angle to make the runway. not to mention the fact that Kai Tak was surrounded by office towers and skyscrapers... google it, there are a ton of pics up of this. also, kai tak got closed after the new airport (Chep Lap Kok) was opened july 6, 1998.

SuredT jij hebt echt de beste baan ooit en dan ook nog eens dat filmen, altijd mooi hoe jij die dingen aan de grond zet of in de lucht krijg. jammer dat ik alleen maar flight simulator kan doen :D

@jeffg24LT21 minimums is the point at which the plane can no longer "go-around" and is commited to the landing. the altitude at which minimums is called depends on the size and weight of the aircraft.
@ThePilotGuy14 жыл бұрын
@steelersfanhawaii thats the GPWS and it is telling them that the nose of the plane is 500, 100, 50,40,30,20,10 from the ground. Happy Flyings :)

Very Nice! It's a differant sight than from the windscreen of a C-182 looking down a 1000ft strip. Thanks keep 'em coming. :-)

thanks for posting such a great reply - i had been wondering the same and your answer was very clear and informative.
@speedofsilence14 жыл бұрын
@PielsG00d no, it means that you have reached the decision height which depends on the type of cat landing you do (e.g. 200ft for a CAT1 approach) . If you are not visual with the runway, minimums means the lowest altitude you can get, so execute a missed approach by giving full throttle for a go around or just land
@RippedWookie14 жыл бұрын
@SuredT GA in the US also works with knots. I know of a few older aircraft that work with MPH but that's only really seen in cars nowadays.
@cycloneblack17 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the pilot not-in-command reads off the ground speed for braking information. Furthermore, reverse thrust is usually disengaged before the aircraft reaches 60 kts, so it doesn't start ingesting it's own hot exhaust.
@SuperAudimaniac13 жыл бұрын
@iammdeepak1 The engines redirect the airflow forward and the throttle is increased- this is reverse thrust. On propeller-driven aircraft, the pitch of the blades can be controlled.
@Bateseh15 жыл бұрын
It's called a displaced threshold. The section before the 'piano keys' can be used for takeoff, but not for landing. Hope this cleared it up for you.
@CathayGuy14 жыл бұрын
Wow what a perfect day and landing ; ). I was recently in Hong Kong and, every day there was low visibility with a low celling as well.

Great set of videos SuredT! Do you have a camera mount on the glare shield? An if so, how did you get that approved with your airline? Because you can't just put things like that in the cockpit without engineering data and FAA/JAA approval as they may affect the safety of flight. Or, is it a real small camera and you used duct-tape? Great work anyways, most people on the planet don't know what take off/landing looks like from the cockpit of a 747 and it's great for you to share this experience.
@_Tommmmmm_14 жыл бұрын
@SuredT We mostly use knots in GA stuff here in the US now.
@Welkenaamisvrij14 жыл бұрын
@SuredT The 100...50...40...30 etcetera are not knots are they??? I always thought it was the altitude in feet...
@boeingnerd7715 жыл бұрын
@montbard nope,your ment to approach on manual thrust,due to quickly changing weather and just because its easier and it suits the captain

How long do you have for "downtime" at these ports of call? Enough to stretch out and shop for a day or so, or is it an immediate turn around? Seems like they would give you a day or two off!

@SuredT General Aviation pilots in the USA work with knots, not miles per hour. According to my dad and my neighber, a 30yr GA pilot. He says all pilots work in knots, not mph.
@SuredT16 жыл бұрын
When the weather is like in this video and the runway is clear, there is no reason to wait till the "minimums" call to decide to land or not. And when the decision is made you can also announce it as in this video at 0:06.
@tigranthegreat214 жыл бұрын
@steelersfanhawaii actually thats the speed in miles per hour, or knots, mostly knots
@sammygoris14 жыл бұрын
@SuredT Yeah I read in a flight simulator tutorial (for a 747-400), that you set your Autopilot speed to your V2 speed, and turn on autothrottle and autopilot speed button on the runway, so you speed up on the runway using the autothrottle rather than controlling the throttle levers yourself, and later on after take off you engange the rest of your autopilot, altitude, heading, v/s, etc Is that wrong?
@Ken_Weber_organist14 жыл бұрын
I have a question (I am not a pilot, just an aviation enthusiast): After the aircraft touches down, what units are the numbers called out in when someone barks out 100, 90, 80, etc... Are they knots? kilometers per hour? or miles per hour?
@oguzulgen16 жыл бұрын
Great videos,but I got a question.You never call out "landing" or "going around" after the "minimums" callout,why is that ?
@montbard15 жыл бұрын
I have a question... I read on the wikipedia: "According to Boeing published flight procedures, A/T is engaged in BEFORE the takeoff procedure and is automatically disconnected 2 seconds after landing." I always thought taht we were suppoused to approach on manual throttle. What is the right procedure?
@fixxxer267313 жыл бұрын
I was just wondering, what do pilots do when they are cruising? It must get pretty boring on long flights. So what do they do? Chat with the co-pilot, read magazines, books, music?
@jferrer197315 жыл бұрын

Hey, nice landing! Seen all the vids and they rock. BTW, what kind of qualifications do you need to be a commercial pilot? And as a little side question, what does minimums mean, is it decision hight?
@GatwickSpotting15 жыл бұрын
I have done flying before and have over 2500 hours in simulators (real ones not PC ones!) And after a while it becomes second nature. You don't think about lining up you think about making sure you don't land to far down the runway to stop in time and try to make it smooth so the passengers don't question your professionalism.

@SuredT Aren't these units the meters touching the ground?

I just have a quick question. At around 0:25, it says minimums. what does that mean? I've heard from people that it means reduce throttle to idle but im not sure. Maybe I can get a pilot to help me (:
@turbonetic77713 жыл бұрын
@iammdeepak1 Its reverse thrust...a form of braking using the engines.

Minimums mean that the plane reached the point when it can't "takeoff" again and it has to land. For example if the pilot has no visiual contact with the runway and he hears "minimums" he should abort landing, go around to try again.
@lendance14 жыл бұрын
Those are altitude numbers in feet. above the runway.
@SuredT14 жыл бұрын
@montbard Wikipedia is right.
@johan27415 жыл бұрын
Not really the minimums callout is the point for the pilot to decide if he continue the landing or abort it wich couldt be different kind of factors like is the runway clear am i on the right position do i feel comfortable to continue so it means at that point he can decide to continue or go-around
