Thanks to this video I took the reservoir off when changing my coolant, and flushed the crud out that was in the bottom. Very helpful!

Great information, I always overthink the projects I try to tackle, working on my bike or car, this is time-consuming but well worth not rushing the job. Thanks so much.

I’m a mechanic for a living good video but if your coolant comes out looking clean no rust etc there’s no reason to flush just drain everything and refill then bleed system

Do I need to do this every time I am replacing a coolant fluid? I dropped the bike and bent the radiator. In the next few weeks, I will be installing a new radiator and I am just wondering if I have to flush the coolant as described in this video or I can drain it the best I can (at the drain point and coolant tank) and just fill it with the new coolant? 2018 KLR650 with just over 1.000km on the clock

Brand new 2018 KLR650. Did a coolant drain and flush found aluminum flakes in the coolant. What would cause this?

Rather than do a full flush, could I theoretically just drain and refill with coolant more frequently and forego the water/flush compound?
@ianmackenzie686

I agree with you. On my '09 klr as with my twenty year old jeep (both of which take the olde fashioned green antifreeze) I'll use the calendar rather than the odometer. Every two years regardless of miles driven the coolant gets drained and refilled. Zero cooling system issues for both.

I accidentally took off the wrong bolt and some oil drained out. I'm assuming it was from the oil filter. Would that have any negative effect on the bike?

Just double check your oil level and top it off as necessary.

Change it every 3 years just like they said. You can't tell by looking at it if it needs changing. In the old days with cast iron block cars you could tell it was Rusty and dirty looking. Now with aluminum fluid looks good even though all the lubricated properties are worn out. Remember it's just not a coolant it also lubricates your water pump. Changing the fluid is quick easy and cheap. A new water pump, possibly overheated motor leading to failure? Expensive

Yes. Coolant is fine. There are some race and eco friendly coolant options in the motorcycle world, but coolant will cool as a whole.

dont use flush unless u know its safe on aluminium prob not worth it to flush it, just dont wait 5 years to change it

I agree, I only use distilled water to flush and try to replace it every 2 years. In the Clymer manual for the KLR, under the coolant replacement section it says: "Flush the cooling system with clean water. Make sure the water is completely drained from the system"
