That range at 12:27 looks like the EXACT Kenmore model I purchased from Sears in 2006. That is definitely a "liquidator" price, as I did not pay anywhere near $530 for it; I may have paid barely $400. It was a good range, even after replacing a couple of burner elements and the oven element; eventually started having problems in the control panel, and the part alone was about $175, so we just junked it an bought a new range for about $325! 😀

My fellow Project Semicolon soldier, here's a story you'll enjoy: in 1986, my father was the apparel manager of a K-mart in High Point, NC. It was one of the mid-1960's stores. The roof collapsed due to a heavy spring storm. It remained open at about 30% of it's original size during reconstruction.It was mostly just the pharmacy, and a tiny bit of apparel. That was the first time I saw how disgusting the floors beneath the gondolas were. That was enough to keep it alive. The company was still thriving then, so it was revamped. They eliminated the cafeteria, which was basically just a place where everyone went to sit down in turquoise pressboard booths to smoke cigarettes. Some of my ealiest memories were eating repulsive food from that cafeteria that tasted like cigarettes. (I miss the days when walking into a Kmart meant leaving reeking of cigarette smoke.) It was one of the first Big-K's before a Super K made it obsolete in the mid-90's. It became a Hills department store, and barely lasted 2 years. It was abandoned, then leveled to become a Home Depot in 1996. I've scoured the web for evidence of this location. There is none. It was on NORTH Main St. There is still evidence of the SOUTH Main St. location online, but the one I grew up in has no web presence at all. I still remember the phone number: 869-2151.

Heres my take on Kmart and a bit of interesting retail history here in Canada as well. They should've had some REAL solid management in place. Heck they were in horrible shape way back around their 2002 bankruptcy. You can't say "low price" without walmart crushing you so why not create a niche like Target has - although your own - and run with it?!?! Sadly they're too far gone. The same thing happened here when Kmart was in Canada in the mid 90s. Zellers (which I strongly suggest you Google image them) look almost exactly like Kmarts do and Zellers took over Kmart soon after. Fast forward to 2013 and Target Canada bought all the Zellers store leases trying to expand outside the USA for their first time ever and well... they failed horribly too here (long story short) and closed all their stores less than 2 years after opening here with over $7 Billion in losses. Thought you guys might like to know about the similar situation here in Canada! Sadly 2018 will be the final nail in Sears Holdings. I guarantee it.

Hi Mathew, I live in Winnipeg and our last 2 Sears closed on January 4th I think. It's a sad day in retail now cause all we've got is crap at Wal-mart or overpriced stuff at the Bay. I really wish Zellers were still around!
@wendyokoopa70487 жыл бұрын
Kmart too was a victim of zellers greed in my opinion as well
@ScareFestTTV7 жыл бұрын
Debbie McLeod I miss Zellers a lot. I think they truly gave up at the end of it. Our local Zellers in the nearby town of Amherst NS still had the 90s slogan "because the lowest price is the law". Now only a very small portion of the former Zellers is leased to Giant Tiger. I actually created a Facebook campaign which somehow went viral and the local newspaper had called me and everything! The support was amazing for a new Giant Tiger store and they did open soon after 😊

Amy Capen It could have some truth in Canada however I was reading an old article 2 days ago about how retail was changing big when Walmart came to Canada (taking over Woolco) and Zellers retained a 45% matketshare and Canadian Tire wasn't hurt hardly any as they focused on hard goods and car parts.. so that all sounded decent although Zellers was hit very hard Kmart actually had the shortest end of the stick and in the same article it was mentioned that Kmart might not make it to next year in Canada and that they already had to liquidate over $100 Million in leftover inventory they couldn't sell. I wish I could find the article again lol! Sadly Kmart in the states is too far gone. Probably Sears too but they might be worth saving. Time will tell.

It makes me feel a really weird mix of sad for the loss of these retail giants and also a bit glad, like I'm seeing a good friend. Both Kmart and Wallie. The only store I think I wouldn't be slightly sad to see go is probably the company I worked for from 2005-2012. They had such shit management. I stayed there while I went to college because I was able to have a very flexible schedule, and I stayed there for a little bit after. But I am super glad to be out.

I've asked the liqudator at this store to sell me all those balls (the ones remaining in front of the toy isle, and the another bunch in the bin mid-store kinda near the registers),... and to let me keep them there at the store until the last day, so that when the store is almost 100% bare, we can have an ultimate dodge ball game as a final farewell to Moon Township K-Mart. I'm hoping to have an answer to this soon, lol.

@@sweetcat1639 I think that it depended a lot on location. The ones near me in the late '70s and early '80s often looked like the aftermath of a tornado, and if they didn't look like a disaster area, clothes racks were too close together and you couldn't drive your cart through them without raking the clothes, sometimes knocking items to the floor. However, as I traveled around as an adult, I did see some well-kept and decently spaced out stores; still then I also encountered the too close clothing racks at times.🤷♂️
