I'm about to buy one of these monsters. I need it like i need air. It will really bring my forged blades to the next level! Thanks for the vid.

I wish I had this grinder instead of the LD grinder I just bought . Your grinder shown here actually works . If I tried to do any of this type of use on a LD grinder NO way would it work ... Looks like a good grinder from where I sit ...

@weighed1110 жыл бұрын
wow, not cheap but well worth it if you keep doing metalwork mondays
@turbocobra10 жыл бұрын
No sir, they are not cheap, probably the most expensive machine in my garage, even more than the grizzly mill. Now having seen it, I could probably build the same thing for a fraction of the cost, the real key is their pulleys, If you look at them closely, they have tapers on surfaces, and have 45 deg set screw holes, so they aren't exactly easy to duplicate.
@weighed1110 жыл бұрын
turbocobra I am surprised that the mill wasn't more expensive. Also what happened to the piece of angle that went flying?
@GregsGarage10 жыл бұрын
That thing is amazing Gary. The three round overs you did are at least 20 minutes worth of work on a bench grinder.
@turbocobra10 жыл бұрын
Yea, it's a sweet machine, I also have some 400-600-1000-1500 belts to do polishing work, although there arent' too many things polished in the vintage industrial world, lol. Thanks for watching!
@1970chevelle39610 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem. It was going the wrong way. And I had to rewire it. Your going to like that belt sander.
@turbocobra10 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. I think you built your stand a little more sturdy than mine, you used some 3/8 plate to bolt the aluminum plate to rnight? The stand I built is only 3/16" angle with no plate, so far it seems pretty rigid, I may go back and do a plate like you did.
@1970chevelle39610 жыл бұрын
I used 1/4 plate and 2 inch angle iron that is 1/4 inch thick to build the stand.
@SYFGARAGE10 жыл бұрын
that is a sweet grinder! At least you held on to the metal at the very end scaredy pants..lol

Well, it's pretty loud and I was zoned in paying attention, cause that thing will bite you if you don't watch it, and Matt is pretty bad to sneak up on people and scare them, he thinks its funny, lol.... and yea, I am a bit of a scaredy pants...lol

Very, very nice belt grinder. One thought, a bucket of water underneath to catch the sparks and dust? -- I'm quite sick of abrasive dust myself. Can the belts be homemade or are they cheap and last long enough not to worry about it?
@charlesmarlin66329 жыл бұрын
Well Done!! :-) After using it for several projects now, do you have any suggestions / advice for the best place to get belts and favorite grit size? What holds up the best?
@turbocobra9 жыл бұрын
Charles Marlin Thanks Charles. Yea its a sweet machine. Has been rock solid, and a workhorse. I bought a 10 pack of 24 grit belts, and an assorted pack of belts that range from 80 grit to 600 grit. Thanks for watching and subscribing, i have watched some of your solid works videos and have seen some of the things you have done for Keith Rucker and others... take care sir.
@chuck333yt7 жыл бұрын
haha yours has the exact same scratches from where the work rest was bolted during shipping; I was slightly annoyed when mine had those. I am more annoyed now that I see they still arrive like that years later lol. They need to wrap that thing better!
@gateway88338 жыл бұрын
I laughed so hard when that angle went flying. I was working for my dad and was cutting some serious plate armor when the sheer broke, scared me so bad I just walked home and enlisted in the Marine Corps and that was the end of that shit. Found out later that sheer blade, parts of the hydraulic ram and the armor blew through the roof, over top of the building and landed in the car lot behind the shop crushing a couple of cars and nearly killing a mechanic, I think that was the guy I enlisted with.

workshop are to scary, but battle fields are fine??? haha
@rindress10 жыл бұрын
wow makes quick work of it indeed. BTW I'd be careful reaching over the belt to shut it off a loose piece of clothing and you'll know how fast it takes skin off :-)
@turbocobra10 жыл бұрын
Well, good point on reaching over the belt, I was kind of working around the camera, sometimes you have to take risks to make youtube videos, lol but yea, normally I wouldn't have to reach over it to turn it on and off...
@daisy8luke9 жыл бұрын
+turbocobra No video is worth that risk.

Hey Turbocobra, the wiring of that motor... I have a 1/2 HP and cannot find anything to better describe the wiring. By chance could you give us a short clip at to what is wired to what?
@turbocobra8 жыл бұрын
+Rogue inWA1775 Hey man, sorry I don't have details on it, that was around 1 year ago. I remember it's 220V single phase. I used a 3 wire plug. Both hots go to L1 and L2, and the ground or return went to a ground terminal in the motor. Wish I had more info. So you have the 1/2 hp, or the 1.5 HP?
@CKKnifeandTool8 жыл бұрын

a good grinder! how much is the cutting speed?
@turbocobra8 жыл бұрын
+Mike Xie Not sure what you mean about cutting speed?
@mikexie14748 жыл бұрын
+turbocobra I mean the RPM speed multiply by the perimeter of the wheel mounted on the motor. In another word, how much is the speed of m/s of the belts?
@coyoteproject9998 жыл бұрын
True! if the speed is not good, the belt will not last a long time !
@girliedog7 жыл бұрын
Do you always have to wire these things yourself or was this your choice?

Oh I could have called an electrician, but they aren't hard to wire up, so far nothing has caught on fire :)
@dahmanus20028 жыл бұрын
I wonder what will be the effect if you put another small belt behind the face plate so that it runs on oposite the main belt to reduce friction and overheating

So I am new to the knife making world. But my question is where does one get a belt for these?? And what kind of belts are used???/
@turbocobra9 жыл бұрын
+goutymaygis You can get the belts on eBay, and many other places. Just search for 2X72 sanding belts.
@guitarzarfun8 жыл бұрын
+goutymaygis Pop's knife supply, Trugrit, USA knife maker & Jantz are my favorite places for belts or anything related to making knives for that matter. Look at the VSM or Merit brand ceramic belts at trugrit...dirt cheap for a good ceramic belt which will last and last. For finishing, check out Norax belts they also last for years. They wear like iron and leave beautiful finishes. Cork belts are another great option which leave great finishes and last basically forever. Scotchrite belts are reat too, expensive but leave a gorgeous satin finish found on many production blades (Spyderco's for example)
@coyoteproject9998 жыл бұрын
+Ramsey Customs: nope ! there are belts and...belts ! Aluminum oxyde last 2 or 3 min !( good for wood ) you need zirconium or ceramic abrasive belts

Strain Relief Cord Connectors are to be used with SO cable, I think his friend "Chad" is an electrical guy who was self taught and is going to start a fire.

not the best choice of cover plate on that switch as well.
@tomjdesigns12806 жыл бұрын
I would advice to fit the gland. Copex hose/switch box connection and remove that switch plate.
@blakehorton81105 жыл бұрын
It's fine I think could use a boot on the cord but not necessary and as long as it's grounded well the plate or box would be no prob , common practice is all I see just cut a few corners is all
