I never got my homecoming moment with my dad as he died in the Persian gulf war in 1991, his first tour of duty. These stories are the only ones that make me equally happy as I am sad. It was less than 2 months before I would turn 4 that he died. My bro was a few months shy of 6.

How awesome it is for these special families to be able to Skype frequently and keep in touch! In WWII a letter, no matter how old, was a Big deal! It helps both ends of the family to keep in touch, and know how things are going on all sides of the family!

As a proud Brit nothing makes me prouder than the work done by our armed forces and my families history of over 100 years serving King/Queen and country 🇬🇧 and while mostly I love the hardness and toughness of our forces and that's why for a small nation we rub shoulders with the top super powers but I must confess I wish we could tone it down for occasions like this. Homecomings are down played much more , usually at regimental barracks and if a soldier does get the opportunity to do an individual surprise at home etc it's usually a private affair and not even allowed in uniform. So I love watching American surprises like this and from Belfast, GB 🇬🇧 thank you for your service and long may the great and unstoppable force of our nations armed forces continue. The world would be a very different place without the US and UK armed forces doing what we do. Quis Separabit 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸

The British military have a large training base in my country Kenya, and particularly in my home town of Nanyuki. The call it BATUK {British Army Training Unit Kenya}. They not only train in our country, but also help the local communities with occasional free medical camps, undertake small projects like building small but crucial river crossing bridges etc. We welcome hundreds of them every year.

Awesome! 15 mos is too damn long! I spent 20 years in the US Air Force, which included 33 mos in Vietnam during the war. However, mine was voluntary and I was single. Once I got married and had kids, the longest separation I had was about 4 weeks. Welcome Home, SSgt, and best of luck to you.

@@johnreed9050 No, I did a year (12 mos), came back after 6 mos for another 21 months until it was all over. I was in the USAF so it wasn't that bad for me. However, I was stationed with a guy that did five years in a row!
