imagine if these beautiful ships could be salvaged and restored to sail in a modern day naval parade of ships, what a sight that would be......

We have 4 beautiful Iowa class battleships..much more powerful than these ships but running them would be hugely expensive. Sadly, the Brutish did not save HMS Warspite, HMS Rodney, or HMS Vanguard.

The Kriegs Marine sailors had every right to be proud. The vessels they crewed were well built and very seaworthy. These clips of those capitol warships is very educational. Thank you for posting all of these video's.

the only problem was the entire concept of all of the German capital ships was insane; none could counter aircraft threats; none were dispatched to sea with air cover; and most forays were one way trips to death and disaster. Graf Spee & others tied up lots of Royal Navy assets for a time but other than that, the U-Boats were far more successful. NONE of Germany's capital ships was capable of engaging any Royal Navy flotilla since Force H of the Royal Navy or land based aircraft were capable of projecting death and destruction to any enemy surface fleet. But, I give u that the ships were mighty, beautiful, but insane that they were even designed, since #reality was sure to doom their missions, sooner or later.

@@divyanshsukhija6344 have no idea what this rambling collection of letters and words has anything to do with my historically accurate, factually accurate and strategy accurate comment. My comment is spot on. Hitler killed off the 4 engine aircraft cuz it wuz too expensive btw. Bismarck COULD have made it back to France's air cover if the dumb dufus didn't break radio silence after HMS Sheffield lost radar contact, giving away their position. Graf Spee drew too close to the inferior cruiser flotilla and sustained damage to critical systems, dooming the ship to a one way mission. By the same token, the British poorly used many of the battleships and the ill-fated HMS Hood. Obviously, air craft carrier equipped Force H should have been choice #1 and the state of the art Royal Navy radar-equipped cruisers could shadow Bismarck until Force H could interdict. Instead, Churchill & the Admiralty repeated the SAME errors made in the Battle of Jutland; the inferior and obsolete 'battle cruiser' platform was wholly incapable of taking on the state of the art Bismarck. Same error made in the unneccesary loss of the P of W in the Pacific theatre. Thousands of men lost for use of very poor tactics. The horrific losses of Royal Navy in the Med also largely due to the lack of competent air cover of well equipped cruisers and destroyers. The Italian fleet & air force was largely ineffective in the Med Theatre.

Very interesting to study a vessel whose design is purely functional and utilitarian. I was surprise to see portholes but I'm sure they were designed to be easily and quickly sealed if needed. I'm guessing they could open to provide much-needed ventilation below decks and that the vessel was very compartmentalized so that any water coming through the ports would not get far into the ship.

Ventilation was key. Shells would easily penetrate the side plating. It is interesting studying how belt armor actually was dispositioned.

Der Titel ist etwas irreführend. Man könnte denken, dass es sich um das "Kaiserliche Marineschiff Scharnhorst" aus dem 1. Weltkrieg handelt. Sonst schönes Video zu einem schönen Schiff.

Very good looking ship but utterly useless against anything bigger than a heavy cruiser. 11 inch guns were out of date as BB armament before WW1. It’s a well armored WW1 battlecruiser with 1st generation dreadnought armament.
