People who know American pianos put Knabe on the shortlist of greatest American piano manufacturers of all time. This piano was made well before Knabe ended U.S. production. What makes Knabe so special is the combination of great scale design and fine manufacturing quality.
This piano has just been rebuilt. The original soundboard required no repairs and has been refinished to protect it from the elements for years to come.
We just put a new pinblock in the piano and restrung with Mapes International Series Gold piano wire. There is also a brand new set of Renner hammers. There are new key bushings and front rail bushings as well for precise feel.
The case has been refinished with multi-layers of sprayed lacquer which is hand-rubbed, just like the original.
There are many elements of the design of this piano that offer such a rewarding sound. Wet-sand cast plate, high quality solid spruce soundboard, and wide tail are just some of the things that contribute to the rich sound of this piano.

Yes , it’s so nice to listen to a Beethoven’s piano sonata from this instrument. Great playing , subtle and caring. Very sensitive sound from Chopin’s F sharp Nocturne .

My Godmother, a retired concert pianist, gave me her 6' 4" (I think) Knabe (circa 1918) when I was 5 years old. It was the third piano in our home, one for each child. My brother took his, my sister sold hers, and while I was off consulting, my sister sold mine from my mother's home for $1500 while I was on the road for 14 years. I had had it that piano tuned and voiced four times a year forever. And she sold it, taking advantage of my mother's elder years. I have been trying to find one, since, and I'm moving to a new home, soon. I thought I had one, but the man won't make a video of it being played. I can't go see it due to state closures. I don't know that I will ever find another.

There is a Knabe at the Yellowstone Lake Hotel in Yellowstone Park. Has a great sound.

This piano was made in East Rochester, NY where several prominent piano companies were merged by their owners into the American Piano Company, starting in about 1908. Wm. Knabe production was moved to the mega factory in the 1930's. AMPICO eventually merged with Aeolian. The company went out of business in the 1980's despite having been bought out by the former president of Steinway. Besides Wm. Knabe, there was Mason & Hamlin, Chickering and Sons, Fischer and Foster-Armstrong. The plant made airplane parts for the war effort during WWII...!

I performed yesterday on a Wm. Knabe & Co. grand! It was super nice! I think it must be a late, late model (by a different company that acquired Knabe)? It's a KN-520 model s.n. 124358. I cannot find my "Pierce Piano Atlas", It's hiding around here somewhere. It looked and felt like a recently built piano. Little bigger than the model you showcased in this video. The facility I played at rigged one of those "Pianodisc" device into it to perform off of cd's and floppy disks.
