I'm impressed that she rocks the conductor - someone who's been beside her at least a few full rehearsals, someone who know whather her power is like, - and yet there he is, disbelieving so he twists his eye to sight-verify she's still on this planet, then loses his balance so steps back, then pushes himself back upright. Thank you for your insightful reaction to this Angelina Jordan performance. It is obvious that you are a knowledgeable musician who understands the technical and artistic aspects of vocal music. As a retired music educator and jazz musician myself, I would say to all young singers: Don’t try to sing like Angelina until you know how to do it. Take voice lessons and learn everything you can about vocal technique and artistic styling. If you try to do what she does before you know what you are doing, you could severely damage your voice and may never be able to sing again. Angelina has a gift that very, very few people in history have ever had. All of her physical vocal abilities and sense of musical style came with her at birth and because her family played music all the time as she was growing up. She is a force of nature. You can aspire to sing like her, but don’t push it. We would like to see and hear you on KZbin someday!

The wearing of a wreath of leaves, flowers, grasses, and/or branches on one's head dates all the way back to the days of Ancient Greece/Ancient Rome. I think you are misunderstanding her. She looks relaxed because this genre is where she lives. She’s just so comfortable here. But this was an epic performance. I can only imagine the reaction she would get if this was sung at night in a huge concert. The crowd would be going crazy and she would be an instant legend. The flowers in her hair is a Scandinavian thing I’m guessing because I’ve seen other girls from that region wear flowers in their hair. I think the flowers, her dress and her bare feet fit the old school mood. There is something about her at this age that reminds me of Janis Joplin. It’s not her look or her sound but maybe her soul?

A template for how to do a reaction - the right number of in-song comments, on-point and brief. Informed analysis at the end. She has a very very rare voice, perfect for this song. I think the effort from her is in her training; from the little I know about her, she puts in the hard work to pull the full potential from her great gift. P.S. Her head gear and dress would make her fit right in on a stage in the 1950s, right along with that song and voice.

Effortless is a perfect description. I remember her saying in an interview when she was a little 8 year old, "for me singing is as easy as breathing". Unfortunately, in this video you lose some of the details in her vocals because of the "fan-cam" audio, but you can hear it all on the albums version, and it is amazing. You mentioned you were going to do Oslo later, be prepared for even poorer audio on that one as "mans world" was probably the best audio-wise from that show.

I agree with others below, you should listen to her interpretation of Adele - A Million Years Ago. It is quite recent, has a great sound (Neumann mic), and is representative of who she is as an artist. Yes, she is seriously impressive. After covering Sinatra, she ended up singing live for Quincy Jones. After covering Whitney Houston, she ended up singing live with David Foster. After covering Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson gave her the backtrack for his Miley Cyrus-song to do a cover from. She is the next big thing, at some point in the future.

Not for a reaction video or anything, just in your own time, for your own enjoyment. Put on those prized headphones, crank the volume a little, and prepare yourself for absolute magic. To me, this is masterpiece level stuff. So much subtle details and nuances. Just listen closely to how much flavor she puts on the very first "world". It's insane. ..and on top of that she was 11 years old when this album was cut. It's almost impossible for your brain to match the voice you are hearing to her picture on the cover. Seriously, give it a listen (or 10) sometime when you have a minute. I think you will approve..... kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ3FY6hqarxgr7c (would love to hear what you think of it)

Hi SaWD! Glad you are doing reaction videos of Angelina Jordan. I've been following this talented, young lady for some time now. I suppose the term child prodigy is appropriate here. However, there is a difference between Angelina and the numerous other very young imitators we see on talent shows. Angelina literally appropriates the musical work and makes it her own. When you listen to her cover of Gloomy Sunday by Billy Holiday, at age 7, and the author's work back to back, you realise there is something special happening. I don't suppose Angelina herself would be able to give us any kind of rational explanation. Except that, as she once said when asked about her pastime, she promptly replied singing. It is clear that her brain is able to reproduce not only the song but the author's sentiments. those "little vocal trills at the end of runny lines" as you put it. That's not just imitation. It's getting into the skin of an artist and searching their soul. And discovering their humanity. And sharing it. I suppose the innocence of childhood empowers Angelina to do this without judgement, albeit at the subconscious level. She is now an adult professional singer, apparently worth $0.8 million.She has clearly benefited from much support by her parents who have nurtured her career with love, care and responsibility. Angelina is now a 16 year old young lady. Her voice has matured well and remains full of human sentiment. She retains her simple ways and seems unaffected by her fame and good fortune. Winning Norway's got talent aged 7 with Gloomy Sunday has clearly paved the way for great things. All well-deserved. We wish her well on her journey

I appreciate your extra remarks on her vocal ability. I went back and listened to James Brown (who I never liked) and Chris Stapleton (who I do like) singing this song. Then I listened to Angelina again. And for me, she is by far the better singer, and her version is much better IMO. Angelina actually sings the song, while Chris and James scream it. In almost every case when Angelina covers a song, it's as good and usually better than the original. This is no exception IMO. Thanks for your honest reaction. Best wishes. Billy J

She sings what she hears in her head. That's how genius works. Billie Holiday had a very limited range, yet we we hold her in very high regard and rightfully so. Angelina's 12 at this time, I think she is still playing with what she can do with her voice. Sometimes a person who is an original isn't there to meet our expectations, she is here to meet hers. She is going to keep growing as an artist. I can guarantee you Chris Stapelton sang this song a "few" times before he found the magic for himself. I have to ask, what was your 12-13 year old voice doing, is it different now? So let's give her some time and space to work it out. Were you or anybody reading this singing for Quincy Jones at 13? Come back to me when she is in her 20's. I like your reactions, I just think we should all take a deep breath when it comes to a 13 yr. old. I think she did a great job, I also think the band was too loud. I could see her look at the band leader a couple of times. Angelina's still my favorite young singer, I am excited to see where is she going to go.
@knate_official5 жыл бұрын
What I was doing at 12-13 is irrelevant. There are many people who comment that fully believe that she is one of the all time greats already, so do we judge her with that in mind or do we remember that she is very young? Cannot really have it both ways.
@davidcochran62915 жыл бұрын
Point taken, I think we all need to 'slow our roll' a bit. My feeling about her is if she is this good from 7-13 that her potential is exciting. I was taken by her early displays of musical talent. Her ability to sing a song as a whole complete expression. While most young performers may have a grasp of the technical side, her grasp of the emotional side is what has left me gob-smacked. How does she do that? I know that isn't something every young performer has. I think that is why 'we' who follow her progress are so loyal, quite possibly to a fault. Still it is what we hear in the voice as she sings that has us projecting the hell out of her as "The Heir" to the Jazz 'throne'. Are we irrational? Probably. But there is that voice and what it does with a song. I think you are correct in your observations. You have probably forgotten more about real musical knowledge than I will ever possess. All I have is what happens when I hear her sing. It's magic.
@knate_official5 жыл бұрын
@@davidcochran6291 She definitely carries the emotion very well for being so young. The blast off will be when she gains relative life experience to really connect with what she is singing. Watching again, want to comment again. This performance illustrates one of my pet peeves - over-amplifying instruments that were designed to project sound before there were amplifiers. Military (and other) bands played for significant sized audiences for many generations "unplugged." Maybe this venue needed mics and amps, but that brings up my next peeve - sound techs who think the sound is all about them, showing off their amps and effects, instead of serving the song. Hey guys, this isn't an electric guitar! Brass, etc, just needs a little help! Here, Angelina had to fight against the music. (I do realize this low-tech recording from the crowd doesn't get what it truly sounded like to the ear, but pretty sure I'm not far off.)
@knate_official5 жыл бұрын
You definitely arent far off. I do think that the recording source played a part though. Dynamic instruments in direct line with the mic often sound louder than those coming from a side perspective, like vocals often do. Too bad neither of us could relive that show to know for sure. Sometimes the band is too loud and covers her voice. She was made to do this, not forced but it's natural for her.

Sorry its' a question of preference but I listened to the Cris Stapleton version..... personally didn't find anything exciting about it...... never even heard of him until you mentioned him...... anyway as far as Angelina God Has Blessed Us All sending us this Unique Angel.....

Wow. I have a hard time understanding that. Even the musicians Chris Stapleton was playing with during that song were losing their minds. He is one of the best out there in my mind. It certainly is a question of preference though, and thats what makes music and art fun 😊

@@knate_official Its always about musical preference and taste. I did not like Stapletons version either. I do understand you were expecting something else than you got from Angelina, but i do think you need to listen to it with an open mind compared to your preferences.

Nate, Good reaction, a bit wordy on the front end. That's not your usual style so no complaints. Really good review, I learned a new point of view. Thats always good. Please find time to do her 5 to 6 yr old self singing Rolling in the Deep. I will send the link if you want . All the good reactors.... Nevermind I wont throw a guilt trip on you. But you know I will keep nagging you about it. Thanks, Diana

When you say she looks bored i know what you mean. And i think i can explain. She is a mimic. She started copying jazz singers as a baby pretty much. And she's just able to sing in any style or manner, if she's heard it she can copy it, and don't get me wrong, she is creative about how she interprets the songs musically. But she doesn't actually connect to the words, she is connecting with the sound only. Her voice is quite literally an instrument she plays, but the words mean almost nothing to her at this point. They can't possibly mean anything to her because she's a kid, and that's why she looks bored, because honestly she is. She's repeating a task that is effortlessly simple to her, and she is extraordinary at it. But she is just doing the party trick really, being a performing seal. It means nothing to her But come back in 10 or 20 years, add in the failed relationships, the price of fame, the teenage years, school and all the other shit that life throws at you and then she will be writing from a real place, connecting with the words, and the deeper meaning of them, and then boy oh boy, she is going to be astonishingly good.

She is a twelve year old girl so she wears flowers on her head. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

She has this down! Beats Chris by a mile. The only other person who compares to her is perhaps Louisa Johnson (linked below). React to her if you like, but please give it a listen. Not only does she have the voice for it, but her presentation is next to perfection. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rprMfntoZrWZfZY As far as your comment regarding how her growth may affect her voice, I had a similar concern, but now that the growth spurts seem to have died out at a hair under 6', she seems to have weathered that hurdle with no effort at all. She sounds even better today than she did back when she performed this version. The headpiece is a crown of flowers. Seems to be a Norwegian thing. If they had panned the crowd you'd have seen that half the girls there were similarly attired.

Might as well start at the beginning her first recorded song that I know of is I who have nothing done at 6 years old kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJu0i354pbuUm9U The only thing earlier on her I've seen is a clip of about one line sung at 18 months old. Yep a year and a half old singing with a mic (toy?) Already already very good at 6.
@elizabethlessner29114 жыл бұрын
No criticism but she is....tops...13 yrs old. Comparing her to adults is kind of unfair although you would take her voice as being adult. Imagine, she has not even reached 1/2 of her potential.... So, in a singers life she really is still a baby. Where were you or most singers at 12 or 13 when singing?

Che c’entra Chris Stapleton !? É un altro stile, é un altro tipo di arrangiamento. E soprattutto é un uomo. Angelina é una adolescente.
