When you loosen the band saw blade to prevent flattening the tire - as shown in the video - give it the same number of turns (or half-turns) every time you do it. Then, when you return to the saw later you can give it that same number of turns in the opposite direction to re-tension it. That will automatically return you quite close to the original tension, so you won't have to do more fiddling to get the tension set properly. Another good fence for the band saw that sets up very quickly (and good for Colin's drift compensation method shown in the video) is one of those 18" or 24" long magnetic bars sold as a magnetic knife holder for the kitchen or a magnetic tool holder for the shop. No clamping, just let the magnet hold itself on the table where you need it.

The only time I loosen my band saw blade is when I'm replacing it. I'v been using my band saw for 20 years and have never had a problem with a flat spot. It's a 14" Jet.

Thanks Colin - for all your tool tips. So many are reminders of things learned and forgotten! Tip for those of us who forget to release or tension the blade - tape some tags on the saw and plug. All my big tools are mobile, so everything gets unplugged. On the bandsaw, there is a "Tension" tape on body where I need to push the saw, one near the power switch and one at the end of the plug!

To permanently take care of blade drift without having to rely on goofy clamp on auxiliary fences, I took some time to loosen the table mounting bolts on trunnions, which are a little oversized, tapped the table a smidge and retightens one bolt and ran a sample rip. I kept loosening the one bolt, tapping, and making more trial cuts until there was NO drift. Then I tightened the remaining bolts. Permanent drift solution! I must say that my table's bolt holes were not sufficiently oversized to get the job done so I had to use a rat tail file to elongate them a tad bit to accomplish the task, but the extra effort is well worth it. Hint: bolts are easier to access if you tilt the table as much as you can.

Colin, you and I have the same band saw. Mine has been largely ignored for the longest time because I was having the very same problems the you highlighted in the video. So, it's not just MY band saw. Those tips and tricks are a great relief to me. The only problem that I've really had with the Delta was a broken tyre. Replacements could only be sourced, with all the associated costs from the USA. All in all though it's a great and reliable tool. I'll be out there, in the cold, this morning letting off the blade tension. Thanks, Keith

nice videos but i have a problem ive been using a old 3 wheel bandsaw and latly the blade keeps going of track braking the blades so my wife got me a new parksaide went ok the next day the bottom tyre keeps slipping of now ive looked and looked and few say glue tyre down should solve problem so i went back on old bandsaw glued tyre on tried it works great should i do same to new bandsaw gluing the tyre down as its brand new

Shoud you adjust your guides and back bearing to 1/8 of an inch above your work piece ? My manual says to keep the guide assembly just above the work piece, I notice a lot of wood workers have them at the top of the adjustment

Ive been successful cutting vaneer on my Laguna 14/12 bandsaw with a 5/8" blade

I was re-sawing some 4/4 oak with my Laguna 14/12 and a ⅝” re-saw blade, the blade started drifting badly, one of the ceramic inserts on the bottom saw guide had slid forward. After gluing it back in place with some gel CA glue the blade still kept drifting, the ceramic insert had taken the set out of one side of the blade. I am disappointed with these ceramic saw guides.

Colin -Those are some really good tips. I cant wait until I can afford a band saw. I have a question, I work with steel as well as wood is there a band saw that can be used for both? I realize I will need different blades. Is there a not too expensive reliable saw that can be used as a vertical wood saw and a horizontal steel saw that utilizes a piston to slow down the cutting speed? Anyone with a recommendation please feel free to answer.

Delta, Rikon, Jet, and Grizzly all have dual purpose saws...I don't know of any wood\metal saws that convert to horizonal, though.

As D Rickard mentioned, there are a few brands that make Metal/Wood Vertical Bandsaws, but I've never seen any band named saw that can convert to vertical. There are some noname Chinese saws that can do it, but I'm not sure how good they are.

Some very useful tips. The problem I have in releasing tension on the blade is that I tend to forget and turn it on and the blade comes off and invariably needs a replacement.

Make a sign to put right next to the power switch on the bandsaw that says 'Check the tension'. That should remind you each time you use the bandsaw. You could even make a sliding sign like they use on office doors to let people know if they're in or out. On your bandsaw it could read tight / loose. Then when you change the tension at the start or end of the project, slide the sign over and you know what state your blade is in when you come back to the saw. If you're handy with electronics you could even build in a limit switch into your tension adjuster, when the tension is backed off, it hits the limit switch and a LED could light or a relay could disconnect the power. I better stop before I make things way too complicated.

I have a tension leaver on my Laguna Bandsaw and made a little sign with a blade kerf on it and place it on the blade saying tension is off when not in use, then I just take it away and set the lever again to use it, simple
