I had a TKR on my right leg five days ago. Walked out of hospital same day with a walker. By the next evening was walking on my own. Today my range of motion was 110 degrees, I’ve been doing full rotations on the exercise bike for 2 days, and I have no pain except when doing PT. Tomorrow I will be driving, since I am only taking Tylenol for pain. Modern medicine is truly wonderful.

I'm having knee replacement surgery very soon and I am so freaking out. I definitely do not want the needles in my back for anesthesia. I had a fail one with my last pregnancy and it took about six sticks to get it right. I thought I was gonna be paralyzed. The shots in your spine are a delicate process I'm my mind . Don't want them again.

It’s not bad, really. I had it done Sept 30, ‘ 24. You can’t see them doing it, the only thing you feel is pressure. You will need the spinal block. It numbs everything fro the middle back to your tail end and the leg.

I had a TKR 2 weeks ago and was up an walking soon after I was awake in the recovery room. I walked around the ward with a walker, went up the small staircase they had in the ward. I now walk without the use of a walker or cane. I recommend everyone do the exercises before and after the surgery and take the medications as prescribed by the doctor. Remember “ Tough Times don’t last but Tough People Do” and You can do it !!!

Find it hard to believe just after two weeks your walking without any assistance from a cane, crutch, etc.. and are you walking normal as in you have no limp, your walking straight forward, going up and down stairs with no pain?

@@Gregory-sm9pf well I got scorched by my doctor for not using a cane but I didn’t for the longest time. I think doing the exercises daily well twice a day helped also. I am 7 months out from the operation and walking up to 2 1/2 miles with no problems. There is a little dull pain still but getting around a lot better. They say it takes up to a year to heal so time will time.

@@scotsmanofnewengland7713 I had TKR surgery on my left knee back in March and just had my right knee done last month, I can walk with no cane or crutch also but I can't walk straight and I limp, so I use my crutch to keep me walking and bending normally so as I'm healing I won't heal with a limp, that's why your doctor probably got upset with you, we definitely need to use some sort of a support so we heal correctly, best of luck with your recovery and yes, it's a year to a year and a half for a full recovery

Knee replacement is a wonderful help to many people. I had mine done 9 weeks ago and the surgery and rehab went smoothly. After that there is, depending on what adjustments were made ie., straightening the leg if it was getting bowed out, a period where your your soft tissues, tendons, ligaments, nerves, have to heal or adjust to a different placement. You may tighten up in the hamstrings or IT band which will cause some issues (inflammation in other capsules like the fibula)) when straightening and bending, when you are going down a set of stairs or when on the stationary bike. It is not a straight line of healing. Also you will be having lack of sleep . Be aware there are different hurdles that you will also go through and that is why it takes most a full year to heal. Try to pace yourself and stay positive looking at the day you are in and not ahead. Keeping your mind strong and positive determined to do the ROM and strengthening exercises at each point along the healing process is key. Dont over do it, your knee will definitely let you know and you may have to take a different route to settle it down. The videos created by physiotherapist that deal with TKR and the orthopedic surgeons were invaluable at each step of the journey. Thankful for my TKR.

I had TKR a week ago. I was told I could stay overnight, but I chose to go up and down the stairs and prove I could leave within 8 or 9 hours (I struggled with waking up from anesthesia for 2 hours). I am happy I was able to come home the first night. I think my recovery was more at my pace. I need to start therapy today, but Im so happy I had this done.

I had my right hip replaced in 2016 with a 2-day hospital stay. Off the walker in 9 days and the cane in 3 weeks. The right knee was done in July 2021 and the left one Nov. 21st, 2022, both outpatient. I had general anesthesia with a nerve block each time. I was up walking down the hall within an hour after waking up. Both times the nurse told me to slow down, LOL. I reached my goals of 120 degrees ROM and zero extension within 3 weeks post op on both knees. Yesterday I hiked over 9 miles on trails with elevation gains totaling 700 feet. No problems at all with the new bionics.

I have had so much problems with this type of knee surgery. My first knee surgery five years ago was the old fashion way which I would choose today if I had it to do over, I still have knee pain, still healing.

July 23rd I had bilateral knee replacement. I was out of the hospital at 11:00am the next day and today October 28th I am riding a stationary bike thirty minutes a day, walking normally with 130 degrees range of motion in both knees and almost pain free. Now, I am only waiting for enough range of motion to kick myself in the butt for not doing it sooner. Through the entire surgery and rehab the pain has been very manageable. I was on Oxi for 10 days, after that it was only Tylenol, today nothing.

Unfortunately I will have to be in hospital longer due to prior DVT from prior surgery. Glad to hear everything went well and your pain level was manageable. Just another question did you get robotic assisted as well? I’m assuming your almost back to what 90% by this time now?

I had my son bending my knees past the point that I couldn't but just to the point that I couldn't tolerate it any longer during the first week, I think it helped a lot. At the 10 day mark I was walking outside, first with a walker and within two days without. Stay active but not foolish. Get to PT as soon as possible. It seems like you are not doing much but it really helped me.

I'm 70 and had my left knee replaced in August of 2020 with a night in the hospital. I had my right knee replaced in Jan of 2021 and was released to go home about 4 hours after my surgery. I understand that's because Medicare now only pays for out-patient knee replacements. I wouldn't recommend this for everyone, but it worked out ok for me. The less time you spend in the hospital, the less chance you have of getting MRSA or Covid.

All anterior knee replacements have you “up and walking in just four hours” with the assistance of a hospital physical therapist using a support band, and going about 5 or six steps in a given direction, then back into bed. Hip replacement is not the JiffyLube of surgical procedures. The actual recovery is replete with a lot of pain and bruising, regaining of flexibility and strength, and takes at least a month, more like three.

4 hours! Wow! I had an ACL surgery in 1988. It took a year of physio but not before my leg was ready and healed. I have a 6 inch scar. It took a good 3 years before I could walk with no worries. Then I had a left ACL in 1999. I woke ok in my room and my leg was on a machine moving. From that surgery it took just a few months and j was back to work. Long scar. This is great to hear surgery in an ACL has advanced!

I had my first knee replacement August 2022, on my left knee. I had my right knee replaced September 2023, and my left hip replaced February, 2024. My recovery on my hip was the hardest, because I have bursitis in my hips, and the surgery made the area angry. My therapy finally became productive with a steroid injection. My advice with any replacement surgery is do the therapy. Your recovery depends on it. Its the best way to get back up, and the quickest way back to normal.

Is this process of getting up with in hours of major surgery for the patients best interest or to make the surgical team look good? I’m all for quick recovery but not at the expense of the patients pain control or appropriate post op care. It allows the surgeons to have a faster turn over which pays well for them but I can’t help wondering if the patients are happy to be discharged so fast then have to cope with severe pain at home with no medical input ? I’m waiting for a total knee replacement and am worried I will be booted out so fast so the next person can be done whilst being in agony at home.

I'm in Canada and I had knee replacement surgery Sept 5th. The reason for getting up and walking so soon after surgery is because it helps with the healing process for one thing. When you're sent home, you usually are in the care of someone there. Here they won't even do the surgery if you don't have home care. Pain control is good. I'm pain sensitive. I'm a real baby when it comes to pain and with the meds they gave me I was good. I hardly have any pain now and it's only been barely 3 months since the surgery.

I had the procedure on Dec 11th 2019. It was done in the Netherlands, where I live. I had it done in a private clinch because the eating list can be rather long in an ordinary hospital. Your healthcare system is different from yours. The nationaal health insureance pas for that as well. I stages overnight and the next day they tought me how to climb the stairs up and down with a crutch. Then I was discharched. I had a most excrusionally pain, right after wraking up. They gave me oxicodon and paracetamol. That did t help. Dat and night pain! The fiets 6 weeks you can t sleep on you side. Only on your back. That was a horror. I am also suffering from backproblems with servere pain. The pain laster nearly a year. There were severe peins from al the small nerves that get severed surfing the op. When they start to heal you can get the most peculiar sensations. I had the feeling of having a lange burn in that place. Couldn t stand the feel of clothing on it,but it was the hart of winter. It was a horror!

Since I have venous insuffiency, weak circulation, and leaky veins, on top of which my knee is in very bad shape, my doctors are against me having the surgery. Apparently, I need a doctor who has previously done very complex knee operations. Without the new knee, I will spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair. Maria, may I ask who did your surgery? Go ahead and try same day after op! How about the meals when wifey works! Finally, post-op complications. I rather be on the Orthopedic ward than home sans any medical assistance. Think about it! I strongly advice against same-day-TKR discharge! THREE DAYS MINIMUM - T R U S T M E !!!

Medicare in the United States requires at least a one night stay in the hospital for any joint replacement. Medicare doesn't pay for anything unnecessary. There must be a reason for not discharging patients the same day.

How R U doing? I will probably need TKR, as I injured my knee 3 mos. ago and have a meniscus root tear & a stress fracture & bone edema. I also have full- thickness cartilage loss. 5yrs. ago I had THR and I refused a spinal block and had general anesthesia instead. I already told my new ortho I would refuse it again. Now my ortho says I'm not a candidate for root repair surgery and have modified activity for 4-6 wks. to heal the fracture. So painful. For my THR I was in the hospital 1 nite, and went to rehab for 16 days My hip is great now.

Up & walking after four hours??? Yeh, right. Four grim nights in hospital with loads of morphine (horrible stuff), up & walking with crutches after four weeks in my case, terrible pain, still limping after two months, & living on pain killers. In the meantime, I have lost all fitness, & arthritis taking over my joints as my exercise is limited. I'll reserve judgement until +6 months at least.

Every patient is different. Age, current health, previous issues with the joint all play a part. As well every surgeon is different . It’s important to follow ALL the instructions from your doctor. And also your physical therapist. I had an ankle replacement in 2017. Brand new surgeon fresh out of his fellowship. Newer type of ankle hardware. The procedure went perfectly. And I rehabbed without any issues in less time than they expected.

Talk with your surgeon about a plan for breakthrough pain. I called my surgeon and he allowed an increased dose of oxycodone. After 48 hours, the pain decreased and I continued to improve daily. Very happy with my knee replacement now. Better prepared if I ever need the other one done.
