March 25th 2024 NEW UPDATE ANDRIA TEST RESULTS ARE IN: Final Diagnosis: Anticoagulant rodenticide exposure: trace bromadiolone Avian influenza viruses not detected Suspect trauma: Internal hemorrhage "We were very saddened by the loss of our female eagle, Andria, the female of pair E-3, which died on December 8, 2023, on Kisatchie National Forest. The necropsy and toxicology results for Andria have been received from the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine, Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study. Diagnostic Services Section State: LA County: Rapides Area: Boyce Taxonomic group: Avian-Raptor Species: Bald Eagle Sex: Female Age: 8-10 years Weight: 4.00 KG The carcass of an 8- to 10-year-old, female bald eagle was submitted by Dr. Samantha Gibbs of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. This eagle was part of a breeding pair in Kisatchie National Forest that had been documented via eagle camera for years. At 12:08 pm on December 7, 2023, this eagle was seen having a seizure. At 10:17 pm on December 8, 2023, the eagle had a subsequent seizure, fell from the nest, and was found dead on the ground. The carcass was frozen prior to submission. The carcass was received at SCWDS on December 13, 2023, and was necropsied on December 14, 2023 Shortly after Andria died, the other female eagle Anna in a nearby nest experienced similar symptoms. She was rescued while still alive on the ground on Dec 31st 2023 & taken to LSU for evaluation. On Jan 2th 2024 Anna was euthanized due to her symptoms. Her body was to have a necropsy performed on it but on Jan 4th LSU incinerated her body saying this "We have received word from the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Hospital that the results from Anna (E-1 Female) were inconclusive as to whether Anna had Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI.) Upon learning this, the veterinarian went to retrieve Anna's body from the freezer to run a second test and learned that Anna's body had been incinerated. This news is very disappointing to us all as we really wanted to know what had made Anna ill. Based on clinical science and the symptoms she presented on New Year's Day, the veterinarian did say he believes Anna was infected with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI.) Another female eagle from nest E-3, Andria, died earlier in December and we are still waiting on her necropsy results. We have called the facility in Georgia where she was sent and they do not have any results yet. " It is pretty clear that there was no Avian flu for Anna and she was most likely poisoned with rodenticide just like Andria. LSU missed an opportunity to document the TRUE cause of her death by disposing of her body without the proper testing like Andria had. Very poor choices were made for Anna. It is heartbreaking to know both eagles suffered due once again to man made rat poisoning. Rodenticide is NOT allowed to be used on national forest land. There are however, homes that are on Kincaid Lake and they are not bound by the same rules. Update Dec 9th 2023 ~ From Bald Eagle: "​On 12-09-23, USFS personnel retrieved Andria's body at 0737. The eggs are unlikely to hatch due to inadequate incubation by Alex, who cannot do it alone." USFWS has confirmed with Cody that a necropsy will be done on Andria. She will be sent to a disease center for Bald Eagles. Once he has any results from toxicology reports and/or necropsy (necropsy results have taken 4-6 weeks when done on other eagles from other nests in the past) he will let us all know. Cody also said that Andria died on impact. We can be comforted in knowing that she was not lying on the ground in pain over night. Alex did look over the nest edge while they were retrieving her body, so he knows that she is gone. Another female has already found her way into Alex's territory and even perched above him in the tree - he was not happy. " Thank you Cody & Steve for retrieving Andria's body and taking good care of her. And thank you Tanya for the update. RIP Andria & soar high beautiful lady 💔🦅 Rangers Cody & Steve went to the nest this morning and found Andria was deceased. I will update with more information later this morning from their report. I am sure a necropsy and toxicology testing will be performed. My deepest condolences on the loss of beautiful Andria. It is a very sad turn of events these past few days with her experiencing neurological issues. Alex is incubating the eggs now but they are most likely not viable without being incubated or rolled frequently. They were laid Nov 18 or Nov 19th for egg #1 and Nov 22nd for egg #2. In school ee were taught that "blood out of its place is very painful. Im glad there was an answer about her death. And i am grateful that it wasnt the highly contagious avian flu. No one could go to her until this morning. The only access is by boat. There are too many stumps in the water, especially after the drought effecting the area all summer that lowered the water level, to venture out at night. It would put the rangers in danger. They found her body and took it to have a necropsy preformed in to discover if she had lead poisoning or avian flu. The rangers said she died on impact, and didn’t suffer through the night.

We’ve treated raptors in rehab that had seizures due to lead poisoning, rat poisoning, head trauma, and West Nile Virus. Avian influenza is another concern. However, the vast majority of our Bald Eagles we had come in with seizures were due to lead poisoning (which can be treated successfully with Vitamin K infusions). The eagles had been scavenging the remains of deer shot with lead bullets. It doesn’t take much. I hope we find out in the next couple months here what exactly what going on

Deja Vu moment for me watching her in the nest. This looked like a seizure of a brown thrasher I was rehabilitating. She tried getting to a turtle on the week she was scheduled to be released. What I thought was solid cast iron was not!. She found an area that was rusting and flaking. Seizures started and she was gone the next day. Fell out her tree. I saved many but she was my last... It broke my heart... She beat all odds of surviving a fall at 3 days old, covered with mites, ants and blood everywhere. The vet didn't even think she would make it past day one. BUT SHE DID! Craziest bird made me laugh all the time...I named her "Silly Bird"... She was to be released that week 😭

Thank you. It’s a difficult video, but it needs to be here for all to see as an educational tool. Obviously there are still people using rat poison, unbeknownst or without regard to the potential exposure to predators (raptors, felines, etc.). I’m saddened for those unknowingly and maddened by those who simply don’t care, they want what they want and will do anything to get it. I pray the latter are in the minority. Please ensure the media in this area gets a copy of the video and the necropsy report, the media is your best bet to educate the largest populations nearby the nest and if it goes viral or is sent to the Associated Press, perhaps this story will air near and far. My sincerest condolences to the volunteers and followers of these affected nests and of course my heart simply breaks for Andria and Anna’s partners/mates and potential offspring. I’m unsure if their mates will be able to incubate the eggs up to and ensuring they’re still viable and will potentially hatch with resulting eaglets, but my guess is probably not. Perhaps those with more experience could provide a more accurate assessment than this amateur watcher? May God bless you all, Andria and Anna! 😢🙏💕🦅

Hello yes a common cause of seizures like this in birds is lead poisoning.. The raptors eat dead prey that was shot by a hunter and ingest the lead poison. It only takes a short period of time before the bird becomes very ill like this. It may also be a rotenticide (rat poison) that humans put out to control the critters and the eagles eat the dead rat and become sick and may die. There is no avian flu noted in this area.

My heart breaks deeply for the camera operators, the university, the viewers and all those involved with the nest and eagles history., the 2 eggs and the beloved mate left behind. My condolences, no one gets away from death and no one is left untouched by the passing of a life. This view was all too familiar with me as one of my beautiful lady parakeets had passed in this somewhat same physical action/manner in my arms/hands. The disorientation, seizures, suffocation throws/stroke. This female eagle trying to breath, snoring, then the head being pulled back then the flailing….. no more suffer she will endure. Her spirit will watch over her mate and eggs watching and waiting in the realm of your creator….

Can’t watch. I’ve had dogs go through seizures and let me tell you, it’s awful.

This is hard to watch..but would like to share so ppl realize that poisoning your rodents also poison's the predators that feed on them...this doesn't need to happen...it's our collective responsibility to prevent this
