In the mid 90's Orlando was a part of that mix too. It was very difficult to win in the O'rena from 93'-97',in fact they won playoff series against each team you named during this period excluding the heat who they didn't play. Stand corrected,they played and lost to Miami in 97',that was led by Penny without Shaq. They never played New York in the PLAYOFFS through those years but from what I remember, that Magic-Knicks rivalry was as intense as it got on them winter nights and spring days back then.

John Davidson I didn’t forget about Orlando, they were new on the scene. They did win the last game in the old Boston Garden then they went on to eliminate MJ and the Bulls and the Pacers before getting swepped by the Rockets then the next year swepped by MJ and the Bulls. This series represented a passing of the torch. The Knicks and pistons were mirror images of each other and pretty evenly matched in 1992, but they were headed different ways. The Knicks were on the rise and the pistons were in the midst of a slow decline. The Knicks gave the bulls a great battle in the next round and jumpstarted a fresh new bulls vs knicks rivalry that went on for most of the 90's. I have a feeling the pistons probably would've gotten swept or maybe gotten knocked out in 5 had they managed to win this series. The bulls had figured them out by 1992 and had grabbed full control of what had previously been a very competitive rivalry.
@mangrove5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, at the end of the game, Laimbeer met Riley in the tunnel and said "Congratulations. Now go fuck up the Bulls." Didn't happen, but made for a few good years of playoff basketball.
@coreyrowe41195 жыл бұрын
The Knicks ultimately broke through and beat the bulls 2 years later in 1994 when MJ was gone on his first retirement but they certainly gave us some great battles as the 90s went on while the pistons wouldn't become relevant again until the grant hill arrived (by then Joe Dumars was the only remaining holdover left in Detroit from the Bad Boys era)

The only way The New York Knicks were a mirror image of The Detroit Pistons in 1992 was that the Knicks tried to copy The Pistons style of play. They copied the style, but couldn't copy the success on the basketball court. The Pistons were a rough, tough, bruising defensive team that played the psychological game in getting into their opponents head. Once they accomplished that they won the game. The Pistons passed the torch to The Chicago Bulls in 1991 in terms of who was the best team in The NBA, not to The New York Knicks, who never were the best team in The NBA in the 90's. The Pistons had a huge five year run from 1987 to 1991. An 87 ECF game 7 loss to Boston, a 88 NBA Finals game 7 loss to The Lakers, an 89 NBA World Championship win over The Lakers, a 90 NBA World Championship Repeat win over The Blazers, and a 91 ECF loss to The Bulls. Five Eastern Conference Finals appearances in a row. Three Eastern Conference Championships in a row. Back-to-Back NBA World Championships. They played more games than anybody in that five year period. In 1992, no Vinnie Johnson and no James Edwards for Detroit. Time finally caught up with The Bad Boys in the first round of the 1992 playoffs in a close loss to The Knicks. But when The Detroit Pistons looked in the mirror they saw a reflection of themselves, a team that beat Bird and The Celtics, Michael Jordan and The Bulls, Magic, Kareem, and The Lakers, and a whole host of other teams in that five year period. The Pistons saw NBA Championship Material and a Band of Brothers that will always be called "The Bad Boys". 15 playoff series wins and only 3 defeats, and winning 10 series in a row. So tell me what The New York Knicks accomplished in the five year period when The Detroit Pistons supposedly passed the torch to them in 1992? No, don't...I already know the answer.

Two things make me sad; 1) there is a generation of fans who don’t know the Knicks were once good 2) said generation would call this kind of physicality boring because they aren’t shooting 3s every other possession.
@cmc5394oparva4 жыл бұрын
The thing is, this style of play was a MAJOR departure from the fast-break styles of the 80s. The difference in the 80s is that a lot of the good players could hit mid-range shots consistently, which is something of a lost art now. The current emphasis on hitting 3s came about to counter the ball-hogging iso offenses that grew from the emphasis on defense in the 90s. A team with someone like Carmelo Anthony taking the whole shot clock to make a single basket is going to get emulsified by a team with 3-4 shooters that can consistently hit 3s, but were effective in breaking down defensive game plans in the early-mid 2000s because they rendered all that shot-stopping effort irrelevant.

New York was the Bad Boys 2.0. NY was a less talented version with fewer dependable scorers and clutch players. The Bad Boys were physical and dirty, but they were loaded with talent and had guys who would step up when it counted. That is why they won 2 championship and actually should had a 3-peat, but were robbed against LA with phantom call against Kareem in game 6.

They were a better defensive team In all honesty . Those piston teams were using straight dirt tatics while Knicks was dirty it was alot more team orientated defense but I do agree on the other end the pistons had some great closer
@mikem5914 жыл бұрын
TheBeardedIntellect I agree. Riley didn’t seem to instill much confidence in them during crunch time. He got away with it with the Lakers because of Magic and Kareem. Those guys were already champions when Riley came on board and the Lakers fed off Magic and Kareem’s confidence and winning attitude. The Knicks didn’t have that key guy, like Jordan, Magic of Isiaiah, who was that superstar leader type player who would carry them through in crunch time.

Oakley and Mason would have decapitated Draymond. Can you imagine Barkley and Malone backing down Draymond in the post? Barkley would dominate. Malone would dunk on Draymond every time down the lane. Draymond would feel the pain from having to play against guys like Otis Thorpe, Buck Williams. I'm not sure Steph Curry would survive 90's NBA. @@crulio If you are old enough to remember, they tried to make him a Pippen and make him a point forward, and failed miserably. He did not run the point. And both were castoffs as both came from CBA, where castoffs came from.

@@Yankees_1996 Well if the measuring stick is one of the five best forwards of all time, then he failed miserably. However, if its as a point forward who averaged 16-11-6 for a playoff team, then i'd say it was a success. Both players were important members of playoff teams, who each had an all star appearance, despite humble beginnings.
@Yankees_19964 жыл бұрын
@@crulio I don't care what he averaged for one playoff. He averaged 3 assists in his career. He had absolutely no outside shot. He played in the USBL and then CBA. And the Pippen thing was a quote from the Knicks. And they quickly abandoned that plan when they realized his version of the point forward was dribbling upcourt and holding the ball for 20 of 24 sec. He was a joy to watch. Especially against the Pacers. But he was what he was. A good defensive player who was good inside, and could rebound. He could not shoot to save his life.

@dondro99673 жыл бұрын
Kobe was the greatest streak shooter of all time he had scoring streaks that Isiah couldn’t match on his best day with shots that were more difficult and for longer stretches he has 36 20+ quarters in ad that’s certainly almost triple that Isiah had even though I don’t have his exact numbers to back it (stat goes back to 96). And don’t pull that oh well Kobe just shot more bc Kobe still has triple the games with efficiency on his nights of supposed "shot jacking” (as some say) that Isiah himself knows he couldn’t match. He never had the hit stroke to single handdidly torch a team in the same manner as Kobe as a scorer, u think Zeke could out score a whole team himself through three quarters, even with the same number of shots it’d be practically impossible for him to keep that pace without getting gassed or inevitably start dishing to teammates. It’s Kobe no debate
