I could be mistaken but I think he mentioned "controlling the range". So I think he's saying that its the responsibility of the unarmed man to control the distance of the engagement. And that could be done more effectively on the battlefield where you probably not dealing with a knife hidden under a coat or something. But you're right that if the weapon were concealed or the attacker were to move in close before telegraphing his intent to attack you'd be dealing with a much different set of circumstances. It's the difference between being attacked buy a guy on the street who pulls his knife when he close and a soldier who probably won't wait to access his weapon. Just my thoughts on it :-) .

What is the original treatise this is from?

Almost every knife fighting system ( Krav maga, systema, etc etc....) has been criticised about their effectiveness over and over. These medieval techniques aren't an exeption.

Mr. Clements, with all due respect, this is not the reality of a knife fight. In any era, for that matter. When someone attacks with a knife, they are stabbing repeatedly, pushing and pulling the blade in and out of you or your comfort zone at lightning fast speeds. The only true way to defend against a knife is to attack the person and disrupt their flow and balance. If you try to grapple with a knife wielder, you'll only get cut and/or killed.

Good thing I looked at the comments before saying this myself. I'm new to European martial arts but I've been involved in other arts since I was 4 years old in 1987. I've trained, I've fought, I've worked doors and I've had knives pulled on me twice. Seen plenty of other incidents with knives too. You NEVER want to do this stuff for real. Ever. Unfortunately martial arts are plagued by this kind of fluff and some instructors can't help themselves. The knife defence is the only stuff from the European martial arts that I have found to have this trait though.

what do you think he is doing? He is disturbing his flow brings him off balance and then takes away the weapon or gets him into an arm bar/hold etc.... The lesson was about how the basic stands work in this situation. The real problem is that the techniques work against dagger not as much against knifes.

Christian Kunert "The real problem is that the techniques work against dagger not as much against knifes." That's a silly statement to make.

A knife has a short cutting blade. A dagger has a long "blade" that is thrust centric. When grabbing the blade of a dagger you have the better leaver. Not so with a knife.

Christian Kunert Oh okay, so knives are small and daggers are big? Okay then, got it. Now where's that **rolls eyes** emoticon?

This is good but the attacks are being done from a very long range, most knife attacks are in closer

Interesting, it reminds me alot of the eastern martial arts grappling though. Are there sources you can point to these techniques being used in western history?

I think you'll find that after a while, all martial arts seem almost the same in some context. There's only so many ways a person can strike our grapple, so two different martial arts having the same techniques should not be surprising our make you think they influenced eachother. I've taken kenjutsu and I'm a regular practitioner of both hema and kenjutsu. I sometimes confuse forms and katas because the techniques at certain points are identical, that my muscle memory takes over. Somehow, my 108 form kenjutsu kata becomes the farfalla de ferro.

this doesn't work, a knife is not a sledgehammer, nobody stabs with 100% commitment like that. The best advice if you're unarmed against knife is to run.
