This video kind of proved my theory that the joy is in the journey and not the destination. When you can basically have any knife in existence by just reaching out to the maker, the joy when you have it is not as high as when it was quite the quest to achieve getting your hands in one. To the point you can't even remember the names of the knives and aren't that excited about them. Kind of bittersweet when you get to the destination IMO.
@EpicSnuggleBunny4 жыл бұрын
I'd somewhat agree, but only on the knives in the bottom drawer. I could have potentially better prepped for this video and made sure I looked up every model name first, but I was trying to get it done asap, because I then had to edit, render and upload. I agree, in that the journey is potentially sweeter than the destination. However, there are many knives I would enjoy owning, but are well beyond my reach. Perhaps someday they won't be, we shall see.

If it's not a hassle to you, I have a request. Would you be willing (at your convenience) to make a video explaining how to be savvy about buying and selling production/mid-tech/custom knives online via eBay, knife forums or other means of interaction say like a private sale/face to face? I would love to learn from your expertise as I'm testing the waters on this topic myself with no experience, only with my own research and tenacity. If you can, I would be very grateful; if you are unable, I understand. Thank you kindly.

Hello there, Never seen your videos before, but a KZbin algorithm suggestion made me curious enough to check it out. My take from it? - You, sir, are a dinosaur! I have been collecting knives for awhile, though I stepped away from knife collecting for the past five years, until a fairly recent new purchase… Your video reminded me of the time when Jim Skelton was the youtuber dujour, as your collection clearly shows his (or his pals) influence, because you own so many kitschy, fatso, largely useless customs with funny over-perforated blades. Those knives date your collection to those early heady days of noughties! You know, in 2012, there was a big reset in Swiss watchmaking industry that shook it to the core. It was an aftershock from 2009-10 economic recession. Until then, the money flowed freely and the Swiss obliged by making ever-crazier, over-the-top tasteless abominations of watches that were getting ever more outlandish and ridiculous. And, yet, until 2012 those watches still sold. Then, in 2012, half watchmaking firms went bust, and their ostentatious watches lost most of their value as people stopped buying them. The financial hurricane that ensued, shifted tastes, and whoever of Swiss watchmakers was left standing, went back to making excellently styled good value watches that were done in good taste, as people rediscovered the value of value! Yes, at least for that moment, wasting money on drivel lost its appeal… Well, I stopped collecting knives in 2016 for the same reason: - I felt that whatever was occurring with knives was a repeat of overindulgence that happened in watch industry pre-2012. Almost overnight, anyone and everyone became a custom knife-maker! While it is OK for people to try new things out, there needs to be an understanding that for every ten newly minted “custom” knifemakers there would remain only one standing in ten-year-time, as, despite our shared aspiration to equality of opportunity, some are born with more talent than others, and even among the talented ones, not everyone possesses the therewithal needed to become truly good at what they do. Years are needed to separate seeds from chaff. Yet, the rising tide of momentary fashion lifted ALL of those newly minted “knifemakers”, as their knives became a hot commodity, chased after (!!) as if it was some arms race that collectors engaged in! Skelton and his buddies were among the most effective culprits and enablers in promoting that mercenary side of knifemaking. To their defense - in most likelihood, no one knew better, as everyone was scrambling to get the latest and the greatest and most “bscus”-filled kitschy ridiculous drivel, and not seeing that kings had no clothes… The over-proliferation of custom makers and new firms was not a sign of health of cutlery industry, but a sign of sickness! Anyways, I got so turned off by all that useless “zirkutie”, “timascus” and other “BS-cus” that I sold most of my collection, especially "BS-cus"-filled "dressy" drivel, keeping only ten pieces I thought most functional and timeless… That experience was liberating, and also freed up some finances as a bonus! When I made my recent knife purchase, first in years, I discovered several things: 1) in the interim, I became much more discerning, and the knife I bought, I found immensely satisfying: - for once I had no buyer's remorse, which in itself was ... incredibly satisfying! 2) I noticed that my tastes in knives have undergone a rather profound change, and that I moved on from the types of knives that were peddled by Skelton and co. For example, nowadays I get excited by the new 2021 slip-joint by German-made Boker, where they accomplished a true innovation that was never previously done in a factory knife:- forgoing the steel liners and thus making the carbon-fiber handled knife twice as light as it was. Of course, there are other worthy knifemakers and firms doing interesting, innovative pieces, but, funny enough, one would not know of it from watching your 2021 video! Your collection video was a true blast from the past! I find it surprising that in terms of sensibility and taste, your collection seems frozen in time! Have I seen your video six years ago, I would have loved your collection; Now, to me personally it shows the way how NOT to do it. I speak, of course, only from my personal opinion, without any intent to offend. ALSO, I am sure you have enough fans to counter this opinion. FYI - From all the knives you shown, there were FOUR knives that I thought were excellent - the two Rocksteads, of course ( -My own Shun by Sinkevich was one of the ten knives I kept from my old collection), and the two slip-joints by Johan Ellis. That’s about it. There is also an upside to my opinion !! - I am probably among the very few who are not envious of your collection! Enjoy!
