I was applying a thin layer of ''clay'' (it's really fireplace sealant but it does the same thing) it helps protect the steel a wee bit when quenching. There is not really a need for it when oil quenching, more common to do with a water quench but I thought I'd try it out just for the heck of it. Thank you!

I love it more when you're working on the tang and because of improper grip of the tongs, you hit the piece too hard and it spins into low earth orbit, whizzing past you face. Yep, its always safe in the forge, no hazards at all.

@@aaronyoung8301 I love when I drop a piece of hot steel and it lands on something that I really don't want melting under the heat, so my quick thinking tells me to golfer swing my tongs and send the thing flying instead of just picking it up, mainly because II know I'd take WAY too long trying to pick it up with the friggen tongs in the first place.

Another great way to cool down a blade slowly is but it in a bucket of wood ash, it also prevents scaling on your metal

Borax. It works as flux to prevent oxygen from forming iron oxide on the surface of the steel and messing with the forge welding. Makes things a lot easier when forge welding essentially.

borax. Oxygen barrier, prevents the formation of scale. Helps with forge welding.

According to that works you should shape the back of a knife before the blade, and they recommend tapering the insert so it's wider at the front of the insert in order to compensate for the front of the blade being narrower, at least that was my understanding, I've never made a blade in my life but here I am trying to tell someone how to do it.

What is the role of Borax when applied to the iron?

It melts turning into a glaze that acts as an oxygen barrier so the steel doesn't oxidize and form scale, which can prevent a good forge weld.

Hot coffee will work faster but cold coffee does the job too... just slower.

What powder? I used a bit of forge scale to dye the epoxy black if that is what you were wondering. I already moved just got settled with the computer so I have some videos to edit and upload that I filmed before moving. Thank you!

Or do you mean the white powder when I was forging? That's borax. It works as flux to help clean the steel and prevent oxygen from forming iron oxide on surface of steel when forge welding. Basically makes forge welding a lot easier.
