Just wanted to say that I really appreciated you keeping that blade getting yeeted on your buffer. I think that's the most dangerous (and perhaps most useful) tool in the shop. It's a great teaching that you left that part in. It only takes a fraction of a second for something bad to happen. Nicely done and taught.

I have watched your videos from the start of your channel, Each knife you produce gets better and better, I especially liked this video for the reason it was a detailed start to finish video, you put a lot of time and pride into the production of not only your knives but the videos that accompany them, Keep up the great work, its always a pleasure to watch your channel.

Newly discovered your channel and have to agree. Even with this video being done over a year ago, this work is stunning. Also very clear you've branched out, tried new types of knives, expanded your skill, and have learned how to make your channel and videos stronger. Keep it up - really great to see content creators like yourself stick with something and see the progress on multiple fronts! You're what makes KZbin great - would have never thought I'd stumble upon blacksmithing/blade crafting in a million years but I've found something that I'd love to get started in when I have a space that would allow for the tools to begin the basics.

Great video, I learned a lot about making a hidden tang knife from this video. I am a very new knifemaker and I learned a lot about the details of fit and finish. Layout, metal fabrication using a mill, squaring up etc.. Thanks a lot.

I truly admire your precision and all of the steps you take to get perfection in the fit. Of course I also appreciate sitting similar precision in the finish... but I learn a lot by when I see HOW you achieve that "fit". Those videoed details matter to me. Thanks Jeremy! Now I want one!

That's a really good looking knife and also a very uncomplicated way of making a hidden tang handle. I was overcomplicating it in my head thinking I was going to have to cut the tang shape into some wood (going to make my first handle for a kitchen knife that had a mangled handle) so this video has been very helpful. I hope to have a respectable handle on this knife.

Great video. Good looking knife. You may consider squaring up the corners where the tang meets the blade after you do the heat treat. 90 degree angles during heat treating cause stress risers and a weak spot in the steel at the 90 degree corner. (thats why so many knives fail at the tang) I round off the corners to 1/8" and then square them after tempering. Just a thought. Cheers.

Great job!!! but i dont understand why the holding end should be thin. cant you make one with a thick width? it would be stronger I guess as I read in Mark Owen's book, a full knife is better than a thin ended one.
@CaptainSwift118 жыл бұрын
the thin bit is the tang this knife has a hidden tang
@EliasWalkerfuzzy-wuzzy8 жыл бұрын
Ohhhh... And i even said it wrong. He was talking about a very thin tang at the top of the handle which didn't go through the handle.
@syn0101108 жыл бұрын
the point of a hidden tang knife is that the handle material wraps completely around and your hands never touch the tang metal. yes, it's a weaker connection but sometimes desirable especially if the knife isn't going to get beat to shit batoning or prying or whatever.

great knife! what do you think is the best steel for a small everyday knife?
@Simplelittlelife8 жыл бұрын
Stain resistant knives are great for EDC because you don't have to worry about the care you have them and stuff like that. But a carbon steel is great too as long as you give it a little TLC now and then. All of my EDC folders are Stainless, which is an option that i really like. But I also love high carbon blades too. Probably more a matter of preference and understanding that there is different care required for different blades. Cheers!
@arcticwolfac68448 жыл бұрын
+Simple Little Life ok, thanks! I have started making my first knife using tool steel. I just need to choose the wood for the handle. thanks.
@Simplelittlelife8 жыл бұрын
***** right on. For your first knife, I would make sure you choose the wood based on what you like the look of the best. Who cares what people say about how hard or well suited it is for a knife handle, make it something that you think is going to look the best. That's my take on it. People always have ideas of what you should or shouldn't use, but ultimately, it's your knife, and you get to use whatever you want. Cheers!

What liquids do you use at the different steps of the process? Also, is that a piece of wood on a paint stick? Interesting, but why use that?
@Simplelittlelife8 жыл бұрын
For my hand sanding I use soapy water and sometimes windex. It keeps things cleaner and oddly drier than using straight water. Also makes it a little easier on the hands than just straight water. That thing on the paint stick is actually a special rubber that is designed for de-clogging sanding belts and pads. Works really well and gives a much longer life to the abrasives when using them with wood. I have them in my amazon store here: www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0000DD0L1/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=15121&creative=330641&creativeASIN=B0000DD0L1&linkCode=as2&tag=simlitlif-20 Cheers!

Very sweet looking knife. Very close call, can you reverse the direction of your grinder or just turn it around so if that happens again it would move away from you instead of at you? Just a thought. I saw Izzy Swan do a review on the same sharpening system you reviewed and he took his grinder off its base and turned it around so it wouldn't kick back at you.
@Simplelittlelife8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. It was close. That just just because I was being careless with a brand new aggressive buffing wheel. It is spinning in a way that throws the away from me but bounced back. I also saw the Izzy Swan video (we released a review video on the same day - weird) and I tried reversing my motor like he did. I hated it and can't sharpen nearly as well and when leaving the grinder the way it comes from factory. I noticed he reverses a lot of his tools and I guess that works for him. I thought it was a great idea but honestly I hated it. To each their own I guess. This little incident was totally just my lack of caution and paying attention. Doesn't matter how a tool is set up, it always has potential to be dangerous. Figured I'd leave that part in the video to show that. Cheers!

What would you recommend as a start point to re-finish a blade to something of a satin matte type finish? This kitchen knife I am working on had the blade snap in half (was a big ol' blade too) and I re-profiled it (didn't keep a point on it, rounded it as it's a slicer now) and am going to have to redo a new handle but the finish is crappy. Eventually I hope to forge blades but until I finish my forge and get a good anvil I'm working in modifying knives, putting new edges on and handles for now.
